So without further ado, the chapter-

"Before, when I was leaving you in that hospital, you said something..." He trailed off and I froze instantly, knowing what he was talking about. That day in the hospital when he had left.

I watched in anxiousness as he regained his voice and spoke again.

"Well, I didn't have an answer then, but now I do." He said, looking down at me. I bit my lip and turned away. I was too mortified to look into his eyes. I considered running away from him, but immediately disregarded the thought when he pulled my face up to look at him, a sad look in his eyes.

"My answer is that I-" But, he was interrupted by someone calling his name.

We both turned abruptly to the voice and I stared hard. There stood a girl. Her hair as blonde as sunshine and her eyes an emerald green. She was looking at us and she had called Aaron's name.

But, who was she?

I turned to Aaron to see if he recognised her, but was only met with wide eyes. Aaron looked as though he had seen and ghost. His face had become significantly paler and he stood frozen to the spot. I was about to ask what was wrong, but Aaron opened his mouth and spoke.

"Avalon?" Aaron's voice rung out and he moved away from me.

Even now, when she looked at him with teary eyes, he felt a sense of dread fill him. Life was cruel and it brought a new bout of woe to him. It had thrust his past back in front of him, just when he had discovered means to move on.

"Avalon?" Aaron's voice rung out weakly when he found the courage to speak and then she nodded, making him stumble back.

This wasn't a nightmare. It was real.

Such a surreal sight, but it was real. He had to make sure as he moved closer, the dread building as the memories of his sordid past threatened to rise to the surface. The memories that Lexi had so expertly cast away with her light.

It was all for naught now.

He felt it as a single tear slid down Avalon's cheek as she looked at him and his eyes clenched shut as he looked to the side. He could vividly remember her tears like this when her parents had refused her permission for her Paris school trip because they had booked in a family holiday months prioe. This was while his own mother had thrown up over his consent form in her drunken stupor. He had decided not to go after that to placate Avalon. The memory cut him deep and he exhaled deeply, trying to dismiss the thoughts of how things had once been.

"Why are you here?" Aaron's voice echoed through the empty streets. He kept his voice cold and distant to protect himself from the emotions he tried vehemently to repress. He could remember seeing her in the arms of another in his guest bedroom after a party. It was enough to help with the cold tone and he watched as Avalon wiped her tears before looking to him with a look of adoration he could still remember. It only increased the agitation in him.

"Aaron, I'm moving back here," Her voice was fragile as she spoke and he felt his body tense at her words. He knew with her return, his past self would also begin to emerge and it scared him.

He was glad for the fact that his face was turned away as he duck his hands into his pockets casually, letting out a heavy sigh.

"I thought you were going to stay with your Dad in Scotland. Isn't that what we agreed?" He couldn't help the harshness to his voice and nor did he care for it. She had hurt him so much more than this, despite knowing what he had been going through.

He could still recall the memory of how she had cried on her knees in front of him after he had caught her. It was in his living room which had been trashed in his anger. The sight of a stunned Justin by the living room door was one he could not quite forget. Avalon had cried for forgiveness then, declaring that she would do anything to gain his trust back. It was then he had told her, in his rage, to move in with her Dad and only then he would forgive her. She had surprisingly agreed so quickly and that was that.

In the midst of his thoughts, he heard her tut, her footsteps nearing him. The feel of her hand against his arm made him flinch and the memories of them from before sparked with the familiar contact. A large portion of him begged for him to push her touch away but, he didn't know why, he gave into the small portion that let it be. Perhaps, it was the shadow of his past self that refused to die because that side of him knew that, once it died, he would have to face all the traumatic events. It was an overwhelming thought.

"My Mum stays here, Aaron. You can't expect me to just stay with my Dad my whole life, can you? Plus, his girlfriend's moved in along with her 3 kids and it's a nightmare. I want to be back here!" Avalon explained, bringing him out of his thoughts and he turned to her. From his peripheral, he could see Lexi.

His Lexi.

But he didn't dare bring her into this nor include her for the fear that she'd see his ugly side. She'd see him for all that he truly was and leave him like all the others. He ignored how much it scared him, turning his attention to Avalon again.

"I don't care that you're back. It's not in my authority to force you to stay there. The question on my mind is, why are you here?" His voice was harsh yet again as he glared at her. He didn't know if he felt relief or anger at the sight of her. On one hand, she played the role of a mask, covering his eyes from all his Demons that sought to consume him. And, yet, he always felt restless; unsafe in her presence. Unlike Lexi, who made him face his true, raw self: something that both unnerved and scared him. And yet it was in her presence that he felt the most alive;  the most at home.

"I was in my car and saw you pass and needed to apologise again for what I had done. I'm not asking you to forgive me, Aaron. I know nothing can compensate for what I've done. I just needed to clarify with you that I really am sorry. I'm so sorry." She suddenly said and, with that, she pressed her hands to her face, crying loudly. He could only stare for a moment, at odds with himself. As she cried, he couldn't help but compare her to Lexi. No matter which way he went about it, he found that she couldn't quite compare to the gentle beauty of Lexi: her doe eyes, snow skim and button nose. There was no way to compare.

He opened his mouth to answer her then, but she stopped him with a hand.
"You don't have to say anything, Aaron. I just wanted to apologise and I'll be out of your hair now." She said before walking away.

He had watched her walk away like this out of his house before he had sunk to his knees with Danny putting an arm around him. He had felt so empty at that time but, right now, he didn't know what to feel. There was too much going on inside his head, the thoughts wracking around, increasing the frustration.

The thoughts only stopped for a moment when a familiar warmth touched him and he looked down to see Lexi sending him a small comforting smile. It was enough to create a pit of warmth in him, but he needed more than that right now. He needed clarity. Clarity wherein he'd have to face his past self and this was something he wouldn't want Lexi to see. He only wanted her to experience his better form. She deserved more than his broken self.

"Let's get you inside. I think I need to be alone." He said hurriedly before walking towards his car, not even able to make eye contact with her as he got into the car.

He had felt the heavy feeling lift from him when he had known Lexi was treated but it seemed as though God had something else in store for them. He found it unfair: the constant obstacles that complicated every simple matter.

He laughed at the fact that he was about to confess to Lexi. How could he do that when he hadn't solved himself yet. Did she not deserve more than that? He gripped the steering wheel at the thought, sitting back in the seat.

Lexi, I'll make everything okay.

Coming up for next week's chapter...

Justin sighed deeply at my words, his hold on my hand tightening only slightly before he let go. He turned his full gaze on me before managing a small smile. But, it was still undoubtedly breathtaking.

"I get that. I think I just care too much." He let out bluntly, not realising how much it made me smile. I nudged his arm affectionately.

"I think, I suffer from the same problem when it comes to you." I replied and he smiled at my words.

His eyes flitted to Savannah as she came to our side, greeting me with a tight hug. I smiled at the sight of them; despite their relationship ending, their friendship had only flourished in these past years. Given that Savannah didn't have a job at the moment, she spent much of her time volunteering at church. Justin worked as a chartered accountant and to say he excelled in his job was an understatement. Right now, they both were single, having broken up 3 years prior due to their differences, but were very amicable.

The reason why Justin and Savannah broke up.
