"I can't believe Dagur's not going with Heather to Vanaheim." You all watched as Heather and Arrow left together to go see Oswald one last time.
"Heather wanted to say goodbye to her father alone." Hiccup said.
"You know what I can't believe? If you flip a yak upside down, it can right itself almost immediately." Tuff said.
"Wha?" Snotlout asked.
"And, you know, also that we never noticed Heather had a Dragon Eye lens smack-dab in the middle of her belt!"
"That one I admit is embarrassing." You added.
"Too bad you don't still have the Dragon Eye. At least then, we could look at the other lens." Dagur said.
"Other lens?" Hiccup asked.
"There's more than one, Dagur?" You asked.
"Well Dad gave us both lenses when we were kids. I use mine to look at stuff or to start fires with the sun." You chuckled at how childish is was.
"Do you still have it?" Hiccup asked.
"No. But, I know who does. Anyway, what does it matter? It's not like you have another Dragon Eye laying around."
*At the clubhouse*
"...You have another Dragon Eye laying around. Of course he does." Dagur said as Hiccup showed him the new Dragon Eye he'd made.
"I call it the Dragon Eye Two."
"Oh, 'Dragon Eye Two'. That is some weak sauce right there. We're gonna give you a CBB on that." Ruffnut said.
"Uh, I'm sorry, CBB?" Hiccup asked.
"What does that even mean?" You added.
"Contrived by a bonehead. It's a technical term. Let me pitch one more before you leave. The Thorston-Thorston." Hiccup sighed at the two of them. "Ain't nothing wrong with double Thorstons. Am I right, sis?"
"I, for one, think Hiccup should be applauded for his ingenuity." Dagur said. "It works, right, brother?"
"Well, not quite yet. You see this dial here? You turn it to slide in different color gems for the light to filter through. I still need those gems." Hiccup admitted.
"Perhaps my humble, yet vast and varied trading skills might be of some minor assistance in their procurement, Master Hiccup?" You turned as Johann showed up.
"Johann, what are you doing here?" Snotlout asked.
"I come bearing a gift for Miss Heather. A mea culpa, if you will, for her ghastly experience at the Northern Markets." He explained.
"Save it, Johann. She's not here."
"Oh, pity." Johann replied, glaring at him.
"Uh, but back up, Johann, to the part where you help find the jewels to finish the Dragon Eye Two."
"I have no doubt I can obtain these baubles for you, Master Hiccup. I shall personally deliver them to your door in three to four moons." You were stunned.
"Um, what?"
"No. No, no. We can't wait that long, Johann." Hiccup told him.
"There is a slight possibility to obtain them at the Northern Markets. But I think we all know the dangers that place possesses. Ooh." You raised an eyebrow. Is it just me or is he acting...weird? Like...weirder than normal.
"Well, we'll just have to risk it." Hiccup told him.
"Hiccup, there has to be another way. The Northern Markets has just gotten too unpredictable." Fishlegs agreed.
"Shame, really. It truly is a virtual cornucopia of gemstones."
"Toothless and I can protect you, Johann. I have to finish the Dragon Eye Two right away." Hiccup insisted. Johann shuddered.
"All right, then. I shall rely on you and the mighty Toothless, to ensure my safe return. One small question, do you know the exact sizes of the gems you need?"
"Not exactly, but I could bring the Dragon Eye along to measure."
"Capital idea! And perhaps the lenses as well, so that we can immediately elucidate the efficacy of each stone, hmm?" You had a strange feeling. Something just felt...wrong. You didn't know what it was, but whatever felt off, you knew one thing: you needed to go along with Hiccup.
"Will do. Everyone else, go with Dagur to try and get his lens back." Hiccup said.
"Not so fast." Tuff interjected.
"We're coming with you." Ruff added.
"While I do appreciate the offer of assistance, perhaps a smaller party is a smarter party." Johann said. Since when does he suggest that...?
"Ha. When has that ever worked? Besides, we have to watch our peerless leader's back. And we might have to pick up a gift for Chicken's birthday. You know how hard she is to shop for. I've been going up and down the markets. She doesn't want a quilt. She doesn't want a hay blanket."
"I'm coming too." You said.
"Are you sure, Miss (Y/n)? Don't you think Dagur might need your assistance as well?" Johann asked.
"I'm sure Fishlegs and Snotlout is enough. Besides, I know someone there who can help us. After all, he has helped us before." You said, pulling out your necklace and causing Hiccup to smile.
"You're right. He might even have everything we're looking for. You know him the best, so (Y/n) coming along would be the best option." Hiccup agreed.
"Goodluck, brother." Dagur said.
"You too. Alright, (Y/n), Ruff, Tuff, you're with me and Johann. Fishlegs, Snotlout, you two go with Dagur. Let's get moving. We need to get Dagur's lens and these gemstones as soon as possible."
You all nodded and headed out, going your separate ways. You, Hiccup, Johann, and the Twins hurried along to the Northern Markets. You lead the way to the shop and you talked to your friend about the gemstones.
"Well, I usually do have that sort, but I've been a bit low on my gemstone stock. I've been getting a lot of business recently. But, I do think I have one." He dug around in his things and handed you a purple gemstone. You smiled.
"How much?" You asked.
"For you guys and for your cause, I'm willing to part with it for free. I want to help you all, so you can always count on my shop. Of course, if it takes a lot of work, I might ask for some payment then." He chuckled. You chuckled too as Hiccup came up beside you, taking the gemstone from you and putting it in his bag.
"You have no idea how much even this helps. Thank you."
"Of course." You all headed off together, looking for another one. You soon found another shop that had another color that you needed. The man there gladly presented them to you.
"Behold! The Finest." The Twins shoved the three of you out of their way. You had half a mind to smack them. Seriously?
"Excuse me, kind sir. Where would we find your chicken-sized necklaces for our perusal?" Tuff asked.
"Yeah-huh." Ruff added. Johann cleared his throat.
"I know just the store for you two. Best selection of avian adornments and poultry paraphernalia this side of Constantinople. It's on the far side of the market. The far, far side." They both gasped as rushed off together. You sighed in relief.
"Thank you, Johann." Hiccup said.
"It's about time we got some peace." You agreed.
"While they are gone, might I suggest we expeditiously seek a different establishment of which they are not aware?" You both went with him as you began to look for the other gemstones. Suddenly, as you went through a tunnel, you were ambushed. "Master Hiccup, my worst fears confirmed! Dragon Hunters!" Johann exclaimed. They all had their weapons pointed at you. Nightshade took one end and Toothless took the other. Both you and Hiccup stayed close to them.
"If those dragon even open their mouthes to sneeze, shoot the peg-leg and the little girl where they stand."
"Oh, dear." Johann said worriedly. You and Hiccup glanced at each other. You both knew what to do. In three...two...one! Both of you carefully motioned for your dragons to attack. Both of them attacked the Hunters swiftly. Two of them fired right at you. Hiccup grabbed you, protecting you as he pushed both of you out of the way.
"Look out!" He grabbed his Inferno and you pulled out your weapons, deflecting the rest of them.
"That's enough of that." You both turned to see Johann taken hostage. "Give me the Dragon Eye lenses!" You paused. Wait...how does he...?
"Don't do it, Master Hiccup!" Johann pleaded.
"Shut it!" The Hunter snapped. You glanced at Hiccup, wondering if he had caught that as well. You saw the tiniest glimpse in his eyes. You both had noticed it. You both knew something was wrong. Hiccup put his inferno away and you lowered your weapons.
"I'm not sure I have much of a choice, Johann." He said. Then, the Twins showed up, knocking the guy holding Johann down.
"Hey, Johann!" Tuff greeted. Toothless and Nightshade fought the rest off as the last two fleed.
"What was their problem?" Ruff asked.
"Dragon Hunters. Ambush. You just saved us." Hiccup said.
"You don't say. An ambush, huh?" Ruff asked.
"Wow. Sounds exciting." Tuff said, clearly uninterested. "Anyway Johann, you were so right about that store. Ah! Voilà!" He pulled out a gold necklace. You've gotta be kidding me... "Look at this beauty I pecked out."
"Ha..." Johann laughed enthusiastically.
"Hmm. Ambushes require preparation. Preparation implies pre-knowledge. Pre-knowledge implies...Aha! There's only one explanation for what happened here. The Hunters knew we were coming. And if the Hunters knew we were coming, then there is a mole among us!" Tuff gasped at Ruffnut's words.
"A spy in our group?"
"A traitor in our troupe!"
"Guys, that's ridiculous." Hiccup said.
"Yeah, who would even be the spy?" You played along, following Hiccup's lead. Play dumb, ask later.
"Oh, my Thor. I was so blinded by my pursuit of chicken finery that I couldn't see the feathers for the spy. Now it's clear. There's a fox in our henhouse, and he's been a very naughty little fox." Tuff said, leaning on Johann's shoulder. You saw how uncomfortable he looked. Your brain started to do the work. You made sure your face portrayed no signs of suspicious. There's no way...is there?
"The Hunters just saw us and decided to take their shot. There is no spy. Look, we need to pick up our pace, find these jewels and fly out of here." The Twins and Johann walked out. You looked over at Hiccup. His gaze met yours.
"You know it too, don't you?" You whispered. He nodded.
"Yeah. I think I do."
"Are you sure?" You asked. He nodded once more.
"The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Stay on your guard. Those two might have a point after all."
*Later*
"Turquoise, sunstone, amethyst and emerald. Four down, three to go." Hiccup said.
"Excellent." Johann added. You both heard the Twins talking nearby.
"What about Snotlout? He's a bit shifty, right? Untrustworthy. Oblong body. Spy material, no question." Tuff said. You rolled your eyes.
"Way too obvious. Hmm. What about (Y/n)? Why else would she be with Hiccup?" Ruff said.
"Except to spy on him!" Tuff added like they'd hit the jackpot. Your anger fumed.
"I'm right here!" You barked angrily.
"She makes a valid point. I mean, she saved Nightshade before she even knew about Toothless. What about Arrow? Ever since Hiccup first got popular in dragon training, he's been jealous...Agh! It could really be anybody. I mean, except us, of course." Tuff said.
"Of course." There was a pause. Then, they both had daggers pointed at each other.
"Make your move, turncoat." Tuff growled.
"Just what a provocateur would say." Then, maces were out. Wait, where did they even get those!?
"Provocateur. Good word. Well-used." Then, they both had swords out. Wait, wha...? Nope, only Ruff had a sword. Tuff had an Ice Tail Pike for some reason. I don't even know what I'm witnessing anymore.
"My Thor. That descended into the absurd rather quickly." Johann stated. The Twins continued to fight.
"Actually, it took longer than expected." Hiccup said.
"One question, though." They both turned to you. "Where did the weapons come from!? Like what!?" You were not going to get any sleep over this.
"I don't even bother to question it anymore." Hiccup sighed. "Look, we need rubies. Any ideas?" He asked Johann. You all went off to find the rubies and Johann talked with the woman there.
"Three gold pieces for that? Trader Johann does not pay list price."
"Johann! We're not here to get a good deal." Hiccup said.
"Apologies. Ha. Old habits die hard." He paid the price and handed Hiccup the ruby. The twins came over again.
"Hiccup, those Hunters must have called for backup. I would show you the worried look on my face if it wasn't for the fact that I'm afraid to turn my back on my treasonous sister." Tuff said, glaring at Ruff.
"My backstabbing brother is correct. And now they have air support." Ruff added. You saw some Dragon Flyers in the sky and Johann nodded to some Hunters nearby.
"Look, we got to go now, or we'll never get out of here." Hiccup said.
"Master Hiccup, we still require one topaz and a single sapphire as well, which, in my experience, are not found laying on the ground." Johann interjected.
"You're right, Johann. They're not. But what about underground?" Hiccup said. You huffed.
"Oh boy, here we go again." You all made it to the beach and started looking around for a way into the Sandbuster caves.
"Toothless and I can find the gems and be out before it even knows we were there. Now, the key is finding the back way we used to-" Johann suddenly opened a hatch nearby. How did he even know that was there? Your gut was twisting more and more with each action of his.
"What? You don't expect a seasoned trader like myself to pass up such a convenient cache of valuable goods, do you?" Yeah...sure... You wanted to say, but you held your tongue.
"Johann, you are full of surprises." Hiccup said.
"We haven't even begun to scratch the surface." He replied, making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
"Uh, guys? I'm thinking you should take this discussion underground." Ruff said. Dragon Flyers were heading your way.
"Okay. Ruff, Tuff, you lead these guys away while we go for the gems." Hiccup told them.
"No way! I'm not going anywhere with this traitor." Tuff said.
"Says the double agent!"
"Now!" You and Hiccup barked at them.
"Fine." Tuff huffed and they took off, leading the Flyers away. You all quickly headed back down.
"Perhaps it would be prudent to have your dragons stand guard, in case we need to make a hasty exit." You both glanced at each other at Johann's words. You saw the tiniest signs in Hiccup's expression. You got it. Hiccup motoined for them to circle back around. Now it's just the three of us...
You all began to look for the last remaining gems. You stayed close to Hiccup, making sure it didn't look too obvious. Suddenly, Johann called out.
"Eureka! A perfect topaz!" He tossed it to Hiccup.
"Nice! That just leaves the-"
"Sapphire! Right behind you." You both turned, seeing it there. Hiccup grabbed it and just as he did, you heard Johann speak. His voice had grown darker in an instant.
"I'll take that bag of lenses, boy." He growled. You both turned, gasping when you saw his dagger. Hiccup grabbed your arm, whispering a quick,
"Stay behind me." You nodded, ready to take over if things got out of hand. "Look, whatever Krogan and Viggo are paying you-"
"Paying me? Those two? I pay them to serve at my feet." Johann said, glaring at you both.
"Why do you even want these? And why now?" Hiccup asked.
"Because they're the next step in finding the King of Dragons and the key to yours truly becoming the richest man on Earth." Your eyes widened, remembering what happened with Heather's lens.
"Heather's lens!" Hiccup seemed to have the same realization. Johann laughed, clapping slowly.
"Well done, Hiccup." You both glared at him. "Don't be so morose. How do you think it's been for me? Pretending all these years to actually care about you and your little friends. The number of times I wanted to just scream at the top of my-" He paused. "And yet, I'm wondering, why aren't you more surprised? And what do you find humorous?" Hiccup grinned.
"The twins and their rants. You know, I-I ignore most of them, but this spy thing got me thinking. Maybe, maybe it was coincidence those Hunters ambushed us, but how did they know to ask for the Dragon Eye lenses? The lenses I only brought because you asked me to? Well, then things started to add up. You were there when Heather lost her lens. Your 'distress call' got most of us off the Edge right when the Dragon Hunters decided to invade."
"Not to mention it was when I was injured and unable to ride. It seemed kind of perfect. Too perfect." You added.
"You sent us after Dagur, assuring us he'd be alone." Hiccup continued. "And your ship was conveniently docked at Outcast Island right as he broke out of prison."
"The most difficult part was letting him think he actually stole my ship." Johann admitted.
"You've been behind all of this!" Hiccup said.
"I knew something was off with you today." You growled. "My gut is never wrong."
"Since as far back as Breakneck Bog, I've been doing everything humanly possible to rid the archipelago of you two and your Dragon Riders. But you have a most annoying habit of not dying when you're supposed to." Johann stated.
"Tougher than you expected, huh?" You bragged a little. I WANT to egg him on. He deserves every little stress endusor that I know.
"You have your own pesky habit. You never stop talking. You give away pretty much everything, especially when you think you have the upper hand." Hiccup replied. "You see, when I did this little move to Toothless and Nightshade to leave, leaving was actually the last thing I told them to do." Both of them showed up, climbing up the treasure on either side of Johann.
"The Sandbuster will surely hear if a plasma blast is fired." Johann stated.
"Probably. But I just don't see him needing a plasma blast for this." Toothless lept at him as did Nightshade, but you were shocked as you saw them leap right into a net. They were both caught in an instant.
"Nightshade!"
"Toothless!" Johann chuckled.
"You know, I'm surprised at you, Master Hiccup. You figured out my plans, yes, but you forget my best one yet."
"What?" Hiccup asked.
"Well, come now, Hiccup. Surely you must remember? Had most of them not betrayed me, I'm sure both you and your precious little maiden here would not still be breathing today." Both of your eyes widened.
"No..." Hicup breathed as you stepped forward, your fists curling in outrage.
"Leon," You stated. "he was your puppet!" You snapped.
"Ah, so you do remember!" He said, grinning. "I'm the one that sent him to your island. I'm the one that wanted to make sure that, even if the great Hiccup Haddock and his Night Fury lived, the poor leader of the dragon riders would forever be broken by his own mistakes!" Johann snapped.
Hiccup looked like he was going to faint for a second. It was clear he couldn't believe that he was hearing. Honestly, neither could you. While you put on your best brave face, deep down...his words shook you to your very core.
"You sent him after me. You wanted to break us from the inside." You said, disbelieving at the horrific man standing before you.
"I had known about you
