{Third P.O.V.}
All the villagers, outside from the kingdom of science, watched Senku attentively, each having their own reactions to his presence.
A couple were curious.
Some were amazed.
Others were scared.
"Is that the outsider who wants to enter the Grand Bout?" The chief asks his second-in-command. Never having seen the man in question himself.
"Yes." Jasper nodded. "His name is Senku."
"Rika said it was well. His name was Senku." Ruri said out loud.
"What, have you met him before or something, Ruri?"
"No, I haven't." Ruri shook her head. "But I have heard about him from Rika. Of course I haven't, but..." Ruri says, standing up. She walks out and past her father, "I still know..." she says, staring at the green haired man who was talking to Rika. "I still know Senku."
"Hey!" The two men call, surprised, as the woman begins descending the stairs.
"For years... No, possibly even from long, long ago in the past." Ruri says to herself, as Senku turns around and sees her for the first time.
"Senku-san, right?" Ruri confirms, walking up to him. Surpassing everyone around them.
Senku only turns his head to assess Ruri, the front of his body still facing Rika. "So you're the priestess, Ruri." He chuckles, "We finally meet, huh?"
"There's something I must ask you. Senku, what is your last name?" The blond asks.
Senku stares at her, surprised that she even knows what a last name even is.
"Last... Name..." the villagers around them begin to question, never having heard of the term before.
Ruri continues on, seeking her answer, "Your last name is another name that attaches to-"
Senku cuts her off, "Yeah, I know what it is." His gaze sharpens as he thinks, 'There's no culture of having a last name in this village. How does this woman know!'
"Could it be that you're Ishi-" but before the blond can finish, she collapses and goes into a coughing fit.
Instantly, Rika is rushing to Ruri's side, and soothingly rubbing her back. Jasper and Turquoise also rushing to her aid.
As Senku takes a step closer to get a better look at what's wrong with the girl, Turquoise puts her hand up, stopping him. "Outsider! Stay away from the priestess!" She orders.
"Don't make her walk!" The concerned father orders at once.
"We obviously can't let her stay out here." Immediately a stretcher is brought forward and they gently place the girl onto it. With Turquoise and Rika carrying her back.
"Are you all right?" The older woman asks, concerned.
"Yes." Ruri answers faintly.
As soon as they are back in the shade, Rika pours Ruri a glass of water.
"I have a ton of questions, too." Senku comments, watching the practices scene play out. "Let's have a good, long interview once the Grand Bout is over with."
Rika walks back over to the group in time to hear Magma laugh, "This is excellent. I might not need to kill Ruri. It looks like she'll croak as soon as we get married." He then turns to Rika, "Then I could just marry you."
Kohaku reaches for her blade, but Chrome stops her with his staff. "She's your sister! Aren't you-"
"Of course I'm mad." Chrome cuts her off, a determined look in his eyes and a frown on his face. "But let Rika handle this one.
To everyone's surprise, Rika returns his smile, though hers is a chilling one that could freeze hell over. "True. But remember Magma. What goes around, will come around. I suggest being careful, because unlike Ruri, I know over a billion different plant blends that can kill you painfully." She says, causing the blond to take a few steps back in fear.
Kohaku's strip is green and Senku's is red.
They start the Grand Bout off with drawing the lots, all the well Ginro is singing behind them, "Ring it! Ring it! Make a macchiato-up that'll let us rig it!"
"Yep, screw having a fair fight." Senku nodded. "The kingdom of science fights with wits and genius. Let's game the Grand Bout to hell and back. We'll rig it so that Kinro gets to the top unscathed, and put him against an exhaust Magma. Which means it's best for us if Kinro and Magma are in separate blacks."
"Although it'll be quickest if I can defeat Magma in the first match." kohaku says with her arms crossed.
"Right." Senku agrees. "If you win in the finals, it all gets reset."
Rika hums, "Then it would be easy sailing from there on out."
Suika clapped her hands together, "When it comes to drawing straws, all we can do is pray to God. Kohaku-chan and Magma start off together." Suika begins repeating the phrase like it's some story of mantra.
"It sounds like a tongue twister." Kaseki comments from the side.
"They're drawing up the tournament brackets." Kohaku says, pointing to the board.
"The first round of the Grand Bout will be between..." Jasper says, moving away from the houses, "Kinro and Magma."
Rika collapses onto her knees, "This was the worst possible outcome!"
They were then given an hour break to come up with strategies.
*****
"This is bad. This is really bad." Kinro says, shaking in a corner of the lab. "This is seriously bad!"
"It turned out the exact opposite of what I prayed for!" Suika says, tearing up.
Rika gives the little girl a comforting hug. "Come now. It wasn't your fault. There are some things that we just can't control. It's not all over yet. If Kinro can weaken Magma, then Kohaku can finish him off for Ginro or someone else. But if Kinro wins, we can carry him to the finish line."
Kohaku nods, "That is a good plan."
"Damn it, how could we be so unlucky?" Chrome snaps.
Senku chunked form across him, "Rika's right. What can you do? A science user doesn't count on being lucky." He says, picking up a glass bottle pull of a light, dirty yellow, coloured liquid. "You just do what you can, even if you're dealt the worst cards." He laughed, "A rigged Grand Bout is won by doling, with this Kingdom special science power-up drink!"
Rika took a step back as she saw him begin to emit a dark purple aura. Suddenly, the liquid in the bottle looked like it had the face of a skull! "I really don't like we're this is going."
The shivering Suika nodded, and moved closer to her. Clutching the bottom of the older woman's shirt with both her small hands.
"That's another mighty suspicious drink." Kohaku commented, looking at the green herbs in a jar that was set next to the said suspicions drink.
"Does it have some kind of crazy drug in it?" Chrome asks.
Rika nods, "Are there any drawbacks!" She asks, having a feeling that it may just be too good to be true.
Senku chuckles at the faces they all are making and says, "Sadly, it's perfectly safe. It's made from tea leaves, honey, and sweet flag."
Rika nods along at all the ingredients he lists, "They are all safe."
Senku nods and continues on with his explanation, "The caffeine's a stimulant, the sweet flag will keep you cool, and the honey will jack your blood sugar through the roof. In this stone world, that's nothing short of doping."
Rika's eyes widen as she realises something, "So the substance in the bottle is honey!" She says, clapping her hands together. She then thinks with a weary smile, 'I'm amazed how you made something so I love the into something so scary.'
"That's right." Senku nods.
Well Senku was explaining, Ginro was stuffing his face full, of the pre-mentioned ingredients.
Kinro hit his brother hard over the head three solid times. "Who said to drink all of it?!"
The question brought tears to Ginro's eyes, "We're all out?! What do you want me to do?! If you lose to Magma, I'm going to have to beat him!"
"He ate the ingredients raw." Chrome comments, amazed, as he looks into the now empty container.
"Dude, he finished all the sweet flag." Senku adds from beside him.
"Is that the grass that's growing all over the river?" Chrome asks.
Rika nods, "Looks like it. I can go get some." As the brunette gets ready to leave, Kohaku stops her. "Wait! You can't go. You need to be there for the Grand Bout. Remember."
Rika stops, "That's right. But-"
"I'll go pick some!" Suika volunteers, raising her hand eagerly. "I may not be competing, but I can still make myself useful!" The young girl says, going into the watermelon shell and bouncing off.
*****
The tension in the air was almost tangible.
Rika sat against the bridge, leaning against it. Her medical kit lay next to her. "I've said this once. And I'll say it again. Luck just isn't on our side!" The brunette moaned, her head falling between her knees.
"But, hey, I just need you to make it to the final match, right?" Ginro asks, his mouth stuffed full of leaves.
Rika didn't have the heart to break the poor boys delusions. Because both of them were in the same bracket, Kohaku couldn't beat Magma for him.
Senku was about to tell him the brutal truth, but was cut off by a loud cry, almost reminding Rika of a pig's squeal. "This is bad! Suika-chan fell into the river trying to pick herbs! She's drowning! You're the quickest, Kohaku-chan, so you'd better go help her before she dies!"
Rika leapt to her feet at once, "What-" but she stopped when she realized he must be lying to try and get Kohaku disqualified.
"You're the billion percent lying, obviously." Senku says bluntly, his face scrunching up.
Mantle's eyes widened as he realised they didn't believe him. "I-I'm not lying." He said nervously. "I just happened to pass by her at the river when I saw her!"
"How do you know she was there to pick herbs if you just 'happened' to see her at the river?" Chrome asks, knocking him down and stepping on the smaller man.
Senku nods, from next to Chrome, doing the same, "Come back in then billion years if you want to have a brain battle with the science team, you blatant idiot."
Rika pulled the two off of him. "That's enough. What if you two get in trouble for messing with another competitor."
"Rika-chan!" Mantle says hopefully, looking up at her. Only to start shivering when he sees the dark look in her eyes.
"I on the other hand. Can do whatever I want." She swings her leg back and aims right at his baby maker, and kicks as hard as she can. "Even if we do believe you. Tell me this. You saw Suika drowning. And CHOOSE to do nothing?!"
The man began shivering even harder and he cried in pain. "I-I..."
"You, you?" Rika repeated angrily.
Kohaku put a hand on Rika's shoulder, calming her down. "I know he's lying, but if there's even the slightest chance that he's not, I'd be letting Suika die."
"Kohaku, you're our last stand against Magma. If you bail now..."
Kohaku cuts Senku off, "But I'm the only one who can save her. I'm the fastest. I know he's lying, but I have to go to the river."
Mantel grins in victory, "You're a despicable man, Mantle." Kohaku says to him, before she dashed off.
Rika's eyes darken once again as she glared down at Mantle, "Let me make one thing crystal clear. If anything happens to Suika. I. Will. Kill. You." She growls out.
Senku raises an eyebrow, "I know they're close. But I had no idea they were this close." He says, watching Rika lean against the bridge for support as she clutches her chest in worry.
Chrome follows his gaze, "Suika is the daughter of Rika's master. The only descendant she had in the village. So after she died, Rika's been the one watching over her. She practically raised Suika."
"That would explain that reaction then." Senku nods, watching as tears glaze two gorgeous emerald eyes.
Rika collects her breath as she rejoins the group as Jasper calls the first match. "Round one: Kinro! Magma! Forward!"
"But Kohaku went to save Suika." Chrome tries to stall.
Jasper looks at them, and then turns away, "If Kohaku doesn't return in time for her match in round three, she'll be disqualified."
"Damn it!" Chrome curses. "Get back quick, Kohaku!"
Magma laughs, "Good going, Mantle."
"Yeah!" The small man takes the complement, "I had to make double sure."
"Now that Kohaku's gone, there's no one who can defeat me." Magma says, entering the ring. "I, Magam-sama, will be the next village chief and Ruri's husband." He then turns to his opponent, "Kinro! If you surrender now, I'll make you my right-hand man. I don't dislike strong men. Lick my shoes in front of everyone, here and now! I'll take that as your pledge." he offers.
Rika rolls her eyes, "Oh please. Him saying that just proves how scared he is of Kinro." She says to Chrome and Senku, who were both standing beside her.
Since the moment she joined the group again, the two had refused to leave her side saying, "Who knows what else they'll try."
Kinro is quick to reject the offer, narrowing his eyes, he says, "Magma, even if what you say is true, I would never surrender." Magma's face turns sour at the rejection, but Kinro goes on, "Even in the midst of this corrupt Grand Bout, I'm incapable of fighting except in earnest. Not only that, but I'm not the same man I was before."
Magma laughs in his face, "You've never won against me once!" He reminds his opponent. "What could possibly be the difference?"
"I..." Kinro's first tightens in his training spear, "I have no choice but to win, for my friends!" He shouts determined.
Rika smiles, "He's definitely changed. All those days of training weren't for nothing. He may actually be. Able to beat Magma."
Seeing that the two have said what they needed too, Jasper raises his hand, "Round one: Magma versus Kinro. Begin!" He calls, bringing his hand down to signal the start of the match.
"Your filthy greed is nothing compared to what motivates me!" Kinro says, charging at once.
Magma stifles to block the intense strike. But Kinro gives him no time to recover. He uses his spear to push himself back to build momentum, and
Charges once again, this time with a flurry of attack that give Magma no opening for one of his own.
"Kinro, when did you become so strong?" Magma asks, the arrogance his voice draining away with each strike. Magma finally begins striking back, his spear meeting Kinro's.
"Wow, he's evenly matched with Magma." Ganen says amazed.
Titan nods, "He might have a chance."
Rika laughs at her cousin's reaction, "Of course he does. He's going to win."
"Huh, he's doing ten billion percent better than I thought he would." Senku says, amazed.
Rika points a finger at him, "Don't sound so surprised."
Senku raises an eyebrow at her, "Your not?"
Rika shakes her head, "Of course not. He's trained everyday for this!" She says, looking ahead, a wide smile on her face.
As Senku stares at her, he couldn't help but agree, "Yeah,." he says. As he watches her smile, his face can't help but break out into a smile of its own.
Ginro nods, "This is all thanks to our bottle team's training."
"Why are you getting so smug, Ginro?" Chrome asks. His gaze then hardens as he sees Mantle about to throw a stone. "Hey, Mantle." He calls. "Jasper's an insanely good referee. He won't let you get away with that."
"And you may end up being disqualified." Rika adds, glaring at him.
Mange begins to laugh nervously as he imagines the outcome of being called out. "I was just, y'know..." he begins to click the two stones in his hands together, "Clicking rocks together to cheer him on."
"Nuts." Senku pouts,, lifting his skirt up to let all the hidden items fall out.
Rika sends him a weary smile, "Why am I not surprised. When it comes to dengue substances and items. No one can beat Senku."
No one really notices though, they're two tranced by what they just saw.
"Magma just took a step back. He always just goes by brute force." Someone says out loud.
"Magma's serious." Someone else notes. "I've never seen him like that."
'This is bad.' Kinro thinks, as his gaze begins to get fuzzy, still in his stance. 'He's put distance between us.'
Suika rolls up onto a pillar of the bridge. And sits on the top. From her height, she can clearly see Kinro squint his eyes. As she used to. "Kinro's straining his eyes."
"Suika! You're safe!" Old man Kaseki exclaims happily, being the first to notice her.
The rest follow his gaze. "You're ok!" Rika exclaimes in relief.
"So he was lying about you drowning." Chrome curses, "Damn that Mantle!"
Suika falls down onto Rika's welcoming arms. The little girl turns to Senku, "Kinro probably has the fuzzy sickness in his eyes." She tells him hurriedly. "I can tell because I have it, too."
Rika turns to look at the fight, to see Kinro's attacks missing
