It's normal to be stressed over math every now and then. On the other hand, an intense feeling of worry when conducting math tasks might be math anxiety.

Math anxiety isn't a disorder itself. But it can affect daily functioning. The person (or teen/kid) affected may avoid a math class, lose interest in their studies, and work math problems wrong even though they know the answers.

Researchers believe that between 3 to 5 percent of children have math anxiety.

Math anxiety is not the same as dyscalculia, which is a learning disability affecting numerical processing and math tasks.

Signs of math anxiety include:

- worry that they will do poorly on a math test, even though they know the material and have studied it
- avoid going to math class
- get good grades on math homework but not tests
