NOTE: Major TW! I'm gonna be talking about childhood tr@uma in this section, so if that may trigger past experiences, proceed with caution or don't read the article.
This is a summary of an article on Psychology Today titled "Was My Childhood Traumatic?" by Annie Wright.
If you've ever wondered if your childhood was traumatic, this is probably a hard question to answer. There is no simple answer.
If you're asking this question, then there is some part of you that potentially knows the answers you need. People who don't come from abusive, dysfunctional, or traumatic childhoods don't tend to ponder the question and move on.
But for those of us who do come from chaotic, traumatic, and abusive backgrounds, even if we hide the thought initially, it boomerangs. To answer this question, you first need to understand what defines trauma.
"Trauma is the unique individual experience of an event or enduring conditions in which the individual's ability to integrate his/her emotional experience is overwhelmed and the individual experiences (either objectively or subjectively) a threat to his/her life, bodily integrity, or that of a or family." (Saakvitne, K. et al, 2000).
