TW: I will be talking a lot about depression and things associated with it.

(article from Psychology Today; "Understanding High-Functioning Depression" by Sean Grover)

When people think of depression, many see a sad, lonely figure, despairing and surrounded by a morbid landscape. Depression comes in a variety of forms and isn't just sadness.

Sadness is a feeling that typically stems from a clear downward event. Crying and mourning are normal responses to sadness because it feels appropriate. Sorrowful poetry and books exist for people who are sad because it helps them know that they aren't alone (the people, not the poetry).

Depression, on the other hand, has no such relief. It is often a defense against unwanted feelings. (Depress means to push away or down.)

High-functioning depression, also known as dysthymia (pronounced duhsΒ·thaiΒ·meeΒ·uh), can sometimes be hard to notice. People with this type of depression can lead what appears to be near-normal lives.

High-functioning depression is like a dark cloud in a blue sky. It's always there. The make of the cloud is a substance that even the sufferer doesn't understand.
