AS SOON AS mattheo had stepped of the train compartment, he turned to the girl. "you understand what i meant when i told you don't look for us, right? don't go looking for trouble."
he himself didn't quite understand why he was attempting to protect the girl so much. hell, why had he done it personally? no wonder the boys had looked at him in surprise. small tasks like these, he had no business in.
it wasn't his job to care.
faye sent him something that looked close to an eye roll, and he fought back a smirk. instead, he placed one hand on her shoulder, preparing to lead her to a different compartment.
she flinched away, and this time mattheo forced a smirk across his face. "bloody hell, anderson, you're a jumpy one, aren't you?" what he didn't say was, me too. ever since the torturing began.
the look she gave him this time was definitely a glare.

dear journal, how do i explain today?
i don't understand the strange boy i met. today when i met him, upon first impression, he was careless. reckless. unbothered.
but then he took me outside, and for a moment... he almost seemed to care.
why? i'm just one silent girl. and i'm unlovable.
i met two slytherin girls today too, pansy and astoria. they were tough but kind. tough love, i suppose.
after i was sorted into slytherin, they showed me my dorm, right next to theirs. thank gods i have my own, or nothing would feel right, and already enough feels wrong.
because i don't forget nights like these. i don't forget riddle's brief flicker of surprise that i was sorted into slytherin. i don't forget the whispers after dumbledore told everyone i was mute.
was that really fucking necessary, headmaster??

It's midnight. My broken thoughts have kept me awake again, to no surprise.
But the girl plaguing me is nothing short of surprising. She keeps doing that. Surprising me, multiple times, even within a day.
Why Slytherin? She doesn't seem like one. We've all been honed to lethal dangers, and don't even try telling me that she could be the same way.
You know, it's not a normal thing for Mattheo Riddle to be thinking of someone other than himself.
Something is nagging at me. Something familiar about her... as someone I knew. But it's not possible. I couldn't have known her before this. Even now, I barely know anything about her.
She's from France, for fuck's sake. Although I will say she doesn't look like it, not in the slightest.
But why do I even fucking care?

IN THE DARKNESS, the girl with moon-dipped hair did not see the dark haired boy as he stood in the shadows, watching her.
in the darkness, the girl did not realize how unusual it was for that dark haired boy to feel anything but cold indifference to a person.
in the darkness, as the girl sobbed, she did not realize that for the briefest of seconds, the boy's heart had broken for her.
in the darkness, the boy looked at where he would normally stand, facing the stars, and then looked down at the girl occupying his spot and realized just how broken she was.
they did this strange dance night in and night out, and the anguished girl never did anything to defend herself, even when she'd hear the boy's footsteps as he walked away from that star spattered spot on the astronomy tower, leaving her alone with her thoughts again.
