it's safe to say that y/n l/n is slowly adjusting to life out here in the countryside. well, even if it's at the pace of a snail, she's still doing some progress.
the lack of cars honking outside her window and drug addicts screaming at ungodly hours of the night soothed her- even is she somehow missed how cop cars would chase after delinquents in the middle of her rest.
she was growing homesick, and her grandparents' could see right through her whenever they'd see her playing random videos she had on her camera roll.
call her dramatic or whatever, but this was the first time she'd gone out of the city by herself- without cell service on top of that. she was so used to calling other people, watching videos, and ultimately just the convenience that the city gave her.
they tried to get her mind out of her depressive state by asking her to do chores for them- but that ended rather quickly when henry saw her getting chased by a cow while holding hay that she was supposed to fix.
she really doesn't fit the life of a farmer.
the (h/c) haired girl never bothered to meet up with emma again too, since she knew that once summer is over, she wouldn't see the girl again. and although she was labeled as heartless by her peers in school, she still have some feelings left and doesn't want to break the girl's heart by not showing up next summer.
the lesser the connections, the better.
however, maize had other plans, which leads her to now- standing beside emma as she stared at the produce store in front of them.
her grandmother thought it'd do her well if she connected with kids her age, and asked her to go with emma to buy some groceries for the week. she learned the hard way when she tried to object, almost getting hit on the head with a spatula the moment she showed her disappointment.
if there was one thing she wouldn't get used to- it was the heat.
she tried to ignore the harsh sting on her skin as she let herself get dragged inside by an enthusiastic girl. emma seemed way too happy in buying groceries, it seemed.
thankfully, the shop was air conditioned, and y/n couldn't hide the breath she was holding as she sighed in relief.
"how'd ya like the store, y/n?" she asked, letting the city girl take in the shop as they made their way over to the aisles of canned foods.
although it may not be as big as the ones in the city, she was still amazed at how organized the shop is. the lack of dairy was understandable since most people get them fresh from the cows- plus, she saw some treats she thought were pulled out by their company near the register.
"it's nice." her statement made emma smile, carrying a basket to put in the things on the list as she let y/n explore the shop.
she was too engrossed in the amount of treats that she didn't notice a certain cowboy walk up to her, his mouth pulled up in a grin as he towered over her frame.
"... why did the lights dim-" her confusion was replaced with shock when (e/c) eyes met with mesmerizing carmine ones that shimmered in amusement and delight.
she could feel her environment shake as the guy chuckled, his voice playful and thick as she tried not to get too distracted by him.
"well if it ain't miss city girl. 'm a bit surprised that you didn't get eaten by them wolves."
the (h/c) haired girl recognized him as the man from two nights ago by his hair and hat, looking up at him as she took in his features up close.
she'll have to admit, he's a good looking guy. if he was in the city, girls would surely flock themselves around him to grab his attention- and he'd probably be a jock too. she's almost too impressed that he managed to outshine the guys she'd met before.
from the surprisingly unblemished skin of his, to the way his hair seemed to compliment his looks even more- framing his face in all the right ways.
y/n had a keen eye on beautiful things, and she'd be lying to herself and everyone else if she said he wasn't handsome.
"it's y/n, not 'city girl'." she barked back, brows arched at how the guy in front of her laughed at her words rather than getting mad like she expected him to be.
boothill has to admit, this girl got some gumption in her. he was amazed that she wasn't a push over as he thought she was when he first met her under the oak tree. her enigmatic personality seemed to make him interested in her even more.
so even city folks has some nerves too, huh?
the dual hair-colored man always saw people from the city as stuck up brats who likes to have their work done by someone else, never having to lift a finger in their lives as they run around doing whatever city folks do in their past time.
you can even say that he dislikes them.
i mean, who wouldn't? tourists in this town of his would always leave trash everywhere and act so entitled just because they live in some fancy shmancy environment. he once got into a fight with one tourist before because they managed to bump into an old woman's stall and didn't bother to help fix the fallen produce.
it's safe to say that boothill is biased.
so when he saw her that night, he couldn't help but get a little suspicious.
is she here to try and convince the towns folk to build a building in their land? is she a realtor? does she work for the IPC who knows nothing but to strip towns from their culture to build a city of so-called dreams?
"feisty."
"what do you want, cowboy?"
he couldn't help but laugh at her question, his mouth quirking up to an amused grin as he raised a brow.
"can't i greet a little lady like yourself? or do you think that we folks here are too good for you?" though his tone may sound joking, it had a bark to them as his eyes gazed into hers, trying to see through to her.
"ain't this how you folks greet each other in the city? or do i haveta bow down?" y/n frowned at his words, crossing her arms as she already forgot about the treats beside her beckoning her utmost attention.
"you're acting like we're elites."
"well, aren'tcha?"
she didn't know whether to be offended by his words or agree- since she does know how people in the city act, and best believe her when she says she lets it get into her head too sometimes. but that doesn't mean that he can just say that out of the blue!
with a sigh, she turned back into choosing which pack of gummies to buy. albeit not as immersed to it like she was minutes ago.
"don't you have better things to do?"
"nope." he purposefully blocked the light from the store behind her, liking the way she narrows her eyes to try and read the packaging like some old lady.
y/n had to stop herself from lashing out at him, feeling the veins on her forehead pulsing in annoyance as she unconsciously clenched her hands on the packet of gummies who had nothing to do with her emotions.
"y/n? you alright? i got everythin' we need, so if you wan' anythin' you can choose now-" emma stopped in her tracks as she saw boothill hovering over the poor (h/c) haired girl who was almost at the brink of insanity.
she has to admit though, this was the most emotion she's seen from the girl. well, except when she was muttering to herself about how hot it is outside.
her eyes traded back and forth between the long-haired guy to her newfound friend, the basket almost slipping from her hands if it wasn't for stan taking it from her.
the sudden appearance of newcomers made boothill chuckle, standing straight as he gave the girl beside him a glance.
"well, it seems as if princess over here is wanted." tipping his hat for her, he gave her a shit-eating grin that made her want to rip it off his unfortunately pretty face as he began walking away.
before he could reach the door, he turned one last time- his eyes meeting hers as the brim of his hat casted a shadow over his face. she hates herself at how gorgeous he looks right now.
"see you 'round, sweetheart. i have a feelin' we'll be runnin' into each other more."
and she has a feeling that this won't be the last time she'd want to kill somebody.
