Chris closed the door behind him, kicked off his shoes, and bellowed, "I'm back!" as he ascended the stairs. In the living room, Matt and Nick, deep in conversation, caught him off guard. "What's up?" he asked, trying to sound casual. Matt avoided eye contact, but Nick, ever bold, confronted him, "Are you serious, Chris?"
Rolling his eyes, Chris expected this confrontation but he secretly had hoped that his brother would've forgotten about it or let it slide. But Nick never let anything slide. "I know what this is about, butβ" he began, only to be cut off by Nick's assertive retort. "No buts, you better listen to me, bitch boy," Nick ordered, pointing to the couch, indicating at Chris for him to sit down.
Despite the fresh cuts about this situation, leading to him not wanting to talk about it, Chris reluctantly sat down, realizing this conversation was inevitable.
"There's no absolute way, you went to hang out wiht Mia, a girl with whom you literally had a relationship with, fucking minutes after telling Sophia that you loved her. What's gotten into you Chris. Have you actually gone completely crazy" Nick scolded Chris, and Matt nodded along, their disapproval evident. "Yeah, Chris, in which world would that be okay?" Matt chimed in.
Frustrated, Chris snapped, "She doesn't love me back!" He yelled out. His anger mixed with the deep sadness he was feeling escalated, leading to his impulsive revelations about his complex feelings. He sobbed after realization hit. And hit hard.
Undeterred, Nick and Matt shared empathetic glances, absorbing Chris's emotional outpouring. "She doesn't love me back, and she never will! We were never going to be together, I'm not good enough for her" Chris continued his impassioned monologue, expressing the pain of unrequited love.
Frustration fueled his words. "I love her so much, that it actually pains me physically, but she doesn't feel the same. She made that very clear, so I need to get over her before I get too attached," he admitted, his tone shifting to a whisper.
Matt, sensing Chris's struggle, offered support by placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "How's that working out for you?" Matt inquired, prompting a bewildered look from Chris. "Not good, obviously. But it will. I just need to stop seeing Sophia," Chris confessed, seeking understanding from his brothers.
In a moment of vulnerability, Chris pleaded, "Can you please be supportive?" Matt, demonstrating brotherly love, assured Chris, "We can try. We'll never accept it, but we love you. We'll always support you."Grateful, Chris embraced Matt tightly, the warmth of familial solidarity easing his turmoil.
As they pulled apart, "Mia's coming over soon" Chris revealed Mia's impending visit. Panic flashed across Nick and Matt's faces as Nick confessed, "We told Soph and the girls to come over." Chris, gulbed hard, trying to act unfazed, he quipped, "Perfect timing for them to meet Mia," before heading to his bedroom.
Nick scratched his neck. "Are you sure about this?" Nick asked worriedly. Chris simply nodded. "Yeah. I am " He said standing up.
Just before leaving, he halted and pointed at Nick, delivering a stern warning, "By the way, Nick, never call me 'bitch boy' again." With that, he retreated to his room, leaving the conversation lingering in the air.
LATER
Chris was lying on his bed when the doorbell rang. Thinking it was Mia, he volunteered to go open the door. He'd just started thinking about Sophia again, so he could really use a distraction, and in this case, it was Mia.
"I'll get it," he spoke through the house while running to the front door. He threw it open with the biggest, but a pretty fake smile on his face. When he saw that indeed it was not Mia standing in front of him, his soul left his body.
He saw Sophia, looking like she hadn't slept all night, her hair all over the place, and she was wearing glasses, which she never did. She had heavy bags under her eyes. Her clothing was an oversized hoodie and some sweatpants that seemed three sizes too large. On her feet, she had some slippers.
And still, she was mesmerizing.
In her arms, she held a soft plush, a little bunny that seemed way too familiar. He furrowed his eyebrows as he wondered why.
She held it out for him to grab. He cautiously took it and turned it around. There was a little tag that said "Penny." It was the bunny she was supposed to give him when they went on tour.
He gulped hard, looking back up at the girl. Sophia didn't dare meet his eyes; she looked at the floor, rubbing her eyes before sighing and walking around him, into his house.
Chris walked after her, plush in his hand, the world in his heart. He saw her hug Matt so hard that he swore he saw him turn purple. He frowned at their interaction.
Why couldn't it have been so easy with him as well?
He looked back at Penny. It held so much meaning to him that he hugged it to his chest.
The doorbell rang again, and Chris went back down again to open up. He sighed with relief when he saw Mia. He leaned in for a hug, but she leaped onto him and pecked his lips.
He shouldn't, but he felt disgusted. Her lips weren't as soft as Sophia's were, and he found himself missing the cherry taste that was replaced with a bland vanilla one.
They both walked back down the stairs. Sophia was sitting on the couch, head on Matt's shoulders. "Hey triplets," Mia yelled out from next to me, and his shoulders immediately tensed. He cringed so bad.
Only worse than that cringy hi was seeing Sophia's head shoot up, and the smile completely fall off her face. She looked between Chris and Mia with nothing but disgust on her face and in her heart.
Sophia turned her head back to Matt, and Chris only saw him lean closer and whisper something into her ear. Chris' jaw clenching at their interaction again. Sophia and Matt turned back to look at the so-called couple, but no words were spoken.
Chris looked at Sophia, pleading with his eyes for her to forgive him. But Mia, seeing that little interaction, tried to mark her possession. She grabbed Chris' chin and turned it to her, her lips immediately latching onto his.
Chris wasn't kissing back. He couldn't. Not in front of the girl he actually loved.
Matt turned Sophia's head back to the screen. He noticed the tears in her eyes. "Don't let him see you like this. Keep looking at the screen. Everything is going to be okay," Matt whispered to her, and she nodded frantically, hoping that Matt's words revolved around the truth only.
Sophia did her very best to concentrate on the movie playing on the big screen before her.
The doorbell rang again, and she silently thanked God for this. Chris went back downstairs, Mia following him like a lost puppy.
After some seconds, all of Sophia's friends came up the stairs. When she saw them, her smile came back like it had never left. She sprang up from the couch, hugging them all.
Until Mia cleared her throat. Sasha groaned in annoyance. She turned around, looking closely at the girl, before she noticed that this was THE Mia.
"Were you the dirty bitch that told me to leave your little baby alone and called me a stupid girl?" Sasha accused, pointing a finger in Mia's face.
Mia crossed her eyes arrogantly and started chewing obnoxiously loud on her gum. "Yeah, why? You got a problem with that?" She said.
All of their eyes widened; if there was someone you did not speak with in such a tone, it was Sasha. Matt, seeing this, immediately jumped up from the couch, jogging over to the commotion.
Sasha was yelling at Mia, about to jump her guts, when Matt threw his arms around her waist, pulling her back. "Don't do this right now, baby," he whispered into Sasha's ear.
Mia scoffed, looking at Matt. "Control your girlfriend, or is she like a kind of dog that cannot control her anger?" She told Matt, and Matt's eyes turned dark.
"Shut up, you're lucky I'm keeping her away from you. She'd walk your ass if I let her," he defended his girl. Sophia stood on the side of all the arguing, looking at Chris and watching him watch her.
He felt her gaze on him, so he looked back at her, and she only shook her head in a disapproval way. She pinched the bridge of her nose, having had enough of the commotion. She'd tried to keep her quiet until Mia said something she definitely shouldn't have.
"Ugh, whatever," she scoffed while turning back to Chris and noticing the bunny in his hands. Sophia could see him pleading for her not to say anything.
"I guess this was your doing," Mia said while looking at Sophia. Sophia clenched her jaw so hard; she almost broke her teeth. And she still tried to keep her cool.
Mia grabbed the bunny out of Chris' hands. Chris tried to take it back, but she held it away from his reach. And now Sophia was so mad, that she gave her a death stare.
"How old are you?" Mia said while she analyzed the bunny, playing with his ears. Sophia gulped down the embarrassment she was feeling, and the fact that Chris wasn't saying anything to protect her made her sick.
Mia laughed out loud, looking back at Chris, but Chris wasn't having this at all. He was breathing hard. "Give me the bunny," he spoke, his words firm.
Mia tried to argue with him, but he didn't even let her breathe, before he repeated his demand. This time his tone didn't falter. "Give. Me. The. Bunny," he said, extending his hand. His gaze not leaving the bunny in Mia's hands.
She rolled her eyes but gave it back. The relief on Chris' face was noticeable. "I think you should go, Mia," he said, while still looking at the bunny.
Mia didn't even catch his mean tone; she simply pecked his cheek. "Okay, I needed to go shopping for the party tonight anyway," she said, looking around the room. "You're all invited. I'd be glad to have you," she said a fake smirk on her face, and then she left the house.
Sophia looked at Chris. Tears welling up in her eyes. She walked back to the couch with her friends, and Chris went to his room.
They finished watching the movie, and they left. The four girls were now on their way to Sophias house, where they were going to get ready for the party, that started in a few hours.
