The woman remained where she sat, eyes closed and breaths soft as she remained still, her hands still extended either side of her body, chained in the cold fortress.
It was as though the repetitive patterns weaved around her, circling her with no hope of returning home, whispering lies through her ears, forcing her to shift uncomfortably every once in a while, and so, she kept her eyes closed, her body calm and her heart at ease.
When she closed her eyes, it was as though peace had finally managed to slither through the gaps in the castle, taking her by the hand and taking a gentle hold on her battered and bruised body, holding her close, its warmth just like Kagayas's. Just like the kindness of the sun on a sweet summer day, the birds chirping, the gardens calm, and the woman's eyes closing in peace.
It was almost as though she could smell the tulips, feel the gentle caress of the wind, hear the gentle stream of water through the gardens, her body and mind calm, all while she sat next to Amane and Kagaya, occasionally attempting to create conversation just to keep the atmosphere flowing through the area.
However, that peace was short lived, the echo of footsteps thudding away any sense of freedom and peace, any remorse shown through kindness. That man's footsteps always seemed to remind her; there was always going to be hell if there was heaven.
She opened her eyes, staring up at him through her lashes, a keen glint of rage burning through her eyes, ready to ignite the world around her and set fire onto anything too soft. She didn't say a word- only staring.
Muzan didn't even care to acknowledge the glare in her eye, too used to it by now. He probably thought it was just her normal gaze from the amount she used it around him.
Muzan took a breath, staring down at the woman and raising his voice without hesitation. "You will be coming with me to make a small visit. Don't worry, it'll be short."
The halfling only rose a brow, head itching to the side, feeling her rage build at only his voice. "I will not go anywhere with you. Simply the thought of being around you makes me sick" Her voice was strong, contrary to how many others would behave.
The demon narrowed his eyes, pupils thinning into small daggers as he took a step closer to her, his voice calling out through the area. "Nakime. Free her."
*Buzz*
Without another hint of even a warning, the chains that extended either side of her, fell to the ground, the ends falling and dangling off the ledge she sat on, even as the metal around her wrists remained.
Muzan simply watched as her arms fell slack either side of her, her head hanging low, all before the man was able to take hold of the chains. Without a word, he pulled her towards with the line of chains, forcing her to stumble forward, once again falling to her knees, her chained hands held in front of her as she let out a breath.
"Damn you." She scoffed, grumbling under her breath and unable to fight against the demon.
"You're far too weak to resist. Don't even try and struggle."
She wanted to fight back with some snarky comment, something that meant she was able to get back at him in any way, and yet...she knew he was right.
She was exhausted, so much so that she could hardly heal her wounds anymore, all of her cuts and bruises remaining longer than they should, and her scars only increasing by the day.
She hardly ate, she hardly slept. She hardly allowed herself any time to let her guard down, and she could hardly force away any threat that made its way to her.
In here, she truly was helpless.
Eyebags had gotten darker, hair had gotten messier, scars had grown by the number, her body had become weaker...
She really did hate feeling weak..
Muzan then turned away from her with a scoff, eyes moving into the fortress. His voice suddenly echoed across the castle one more time.
"Nakime. Take us to him."
*Buzz*
The woman felt her body shift, and suddenly, the gentle stroke of the midnight caressed her face, touching over each one of her scars, handling them with care, and soothing her with comfort. Suddenly, she was hearing the lonely melody of the birds, a song she knew so well, and missed so much...
Suddenly, she was looking into the eyes of a woman she loved so dearly.
"A-..Amane..."
Her breath was frozen in her throat. Swearing she could feel tears brim at her eyes, she attempted to launch herself towards the woman, her voice cracking. "Amane!" She cried, weakness and pain finally flashing through her eyes after all this time.
She didn't get far, her chains being pulled back by Muzan so she fell to her side with a grunt, her eyes clenching shut and her teeth gritting, all before she looked back to the podium, her eyes widening.
"You finally...came to my home...Kibutsuji Muzan..."
A weak voice spoke- the voice of a man she knew so well. A kind, bright light in her life that guided her away from the darkness. A constant reminder of what she was truly fighting for. Kayagya.
She wanted to race to him, to cry apologies to him, to feel his warm hold after so long...but when her eyes landed on his state, she felt something harsh stab into her heart. It was like watching each and every one of her siblings fall to her hand over again..but this time, she knew him more than she ever knew them...
This time, she truly held love for someone.
To see his eyes wrapped over with cloth, his body so still it could be mistaken for dead, his voice so hoarse and soft she could hardly hear it over the sweet song of the birds...she could only let out a shaken breath.
"Amane...what form..what shape...does this man have?" Ubuyashiki spoke, only being reliant on his wife at his side.
"Kagaya..." The halfling mumbled, eyes like glass as she watched him.
"He looks like a man in his twenties but his eyes are plum red, and shaped like a cats." The woman spoke, her eyes flickering to the halfling beside him, finally moving back to sit on her knees, releasing a breath. "And (Y/N) is in chains beside him. She has more scars on her face, and her eyebags are far deeper."
Ubuyashiki felt his lips purse at this, swallowing down before he spoke. "Oh..i see..I thought you'd come...for sure...but i didn't expect you to take (Y/N) with you..." The man paused, his lips frowning. "...(Y/N)...whatever has happened...i'm sorry.."
The woman was left, her chest tight, her lips parted, as if she wanted to say something, but she chose to grit her teeth, her head falling down and her shoulders shaking. "Don't say that...It was my fault alone."
Kagaya moved his head towards the duo, but his words directed at Muzan. "I'm sure...you're especially mad..at the Ubuyashiki family...but that's also why...i..was the one who thought you'd come here...and kill me yourself.." His voice grew weaker with every word, Amane moving to grip his purple hand, affected by the curse.
"I'm truly disappointed, Ubuyashiki.." Muzan began, prompting the woman to turn her head back at him and glare up at him, but it was a weak glare. She was hardly holding on, herself. "I've lived over one thousand years without showing any signs of ageing, and the old family who have been getting in my way this whole time have been reduced to this.." A flash of disgust haunted over his features, the woman flinching with anger. "Repulsive...utterly repulsive. You already smell like a corpse-"
"You dare speak to him like that!" The halfling exclaimed, her chains rattling as she glared up at him. "You...you scum of hell have no right!" She cried, voice shaking and breath quivering.
Muzan looked down at her in just as much disgust, his eyes narrowing at her, about to raise his hand and inflict yet another wound, but Ubuyashiki stopped him, his voice tearing through the scene. "I figured...as much..." He began, the duo turning back to him. "No...he's right, (Y/N)..I was..told by doctors..over half a year ago...that i was going to die in a few days.." He grunted, Amane's hands ready to flinch and help him as he began to sit up. "Yet..here I am...still alive..and the doctors...were lost for words.."
Slowly, the bandages began to slip from the man's face. The woman tensed at the sight, brows quivering at the sight. Blood slipped from his whitened eye, his whole face stained with the curse, slowly eating away at him, bit by bit. "And I solely...dedicated my soul to defeating you, Muzan..."
The ill man suddenly fell back. Amane flinched, catching him and allowing him to lean back on her. The halfling flinched to help, but she couldn't go. She could hardly move for heaven's sake...but she wanted to help her friend..so..so much.
"And your fleeting dream will go to waste tonight." Muzan spoke, hardly caring for his words. "I will kill you right now." The halfling flinched. She tried to stand on her feet- to stop him. But, even without the chains, she grunted, collapsing back onto her knees and letting out a cry of pain.
"Don't-..you dare.."
Ubuyashiki spoke, his blind gaze unwavering as Amane remained silent, but (Y/N) could sense something wrong, she could see it in her eyes. She knew something was happening.. "You...might not know this..but you and i...are of the same blood...you were born a thousand years ago..so maybe your blood is different from mine.."
Muzan raised a brow, still staring at the man in utter disgust. "I feel no emotion here. What are you trying to say?" His tone was straight, uncaring for any other answer than the one he desired in this moment.
"A monster like you...came out of this family..and that led to my family being cursed...every child born in this family was weak..and died right away..but when our family was about to get wiped from existence... the priest gave some advice.." Kagays paused, regaining his breath with a small wheeze, still leaning back against Amane, who handled him carefully. "A demon came from your bloodline...so you must dedicate your soul to defeating him..and if you do that...your family will not die out.. We have received wives from the priests for generations now..and with each generation..our children grow more resilient to death...but even then..no one from our bloodline has loved past 30.."
The halfling softened her eyes at the man, the chains rattling as she finally relaxed her arms, her lips parted to release a tired sigh, her teeth gritting with annoyance- annoyance that she couldn't do a thing- annoyance that if she moved, she would get them all striked down- annoyance that her best friend was soon to die, and she couldn't do anything to stop it..
Her thoughts were disturbed and her shoulders tensed with the coldness of his voice. "And now, you are reduced to ramblings...how utterly disgusting. Did that sickness get into your brain? This is of no consequence to me, after all...the heavens are not punishing me." The woman clenched her fists at her sides.
Kagaya coughed, Amane gently taking his hand and holding him close. "I...have second thoughts about that.." Ubuyashiki turned to the halfling on her knees. It felt like he could see through her, as if he could stare into her eyes once more, but they both knew it wasn't true.
Muzan raised a brow in question, looking down at the woman knelt beside him. "The halfling? It must be some sort of silly joke. She's weak, hardly worth giving a second glance if not for her use." He tugged harshly at her chains. She stumbled to the side, crouched at the demon's feet, only left to glare up at him in hatred.
Kagaya let out a soft chuckle, all before letting out a cough, and then a wheeze, the halfling turning back to him and gritting her teeth, attempting to tug on the chains to let her go to him, but the demons holding on to them only grew. "Muzan...what is your dream?" Muzan paused. "It's been over one thousand years...what kind of dreams..do you have exactly..?"
"Number 1, the night passes, oh, so busy, busy~"
A child's song suddenly sparked through the mansion, the halfling turning to her right, watching as two of kagaya's children giggled and laughed, one throwing a ball to the other, the other replicating her actions.
This song...it seemed familiar..
"Number 2, the two leafed pine put the decorations up, on the pine, on the pine~"
The woman only watched. Something seemed so...unsettling about all this.
"Colours, colours, the three-fold pine is mount Kazusa, mount Kazusa~"
How could they be smiling and singing at a time like this..how could they be so uncaring- unless...
Her eyes widened, her mind finally recognising the song. She would often be there with the two of them, singing and throwing the ball right along with them, when they were much younger, ofcourse.
The halfling turned back to the man and woman inside the building, her eyes softening and clouded with tears.
She finally knew what this was all about.
"How about I take a guess..Muzan.." Ubuyashiki began, smirking to himself as Amane kept her hold on him. "You dream of eternity...of being indestructible.."
The man above her narrowed his eyes, his cold tone echoing through the night. "Exactly. It will happen soon, once I get my hands on Nezuko or a blue spider lily.."
Kagaya let himself chuckle, panting out his breath as he spoke. "Your dream won't come true, Muzan..." He determinedly spoke, the woman clenching her fist as she watched the scene, her chest tight and her heart aching at his state.
"You seem pretty confident about nezuko's hiding place. But, unlike you, i have a lot of time on my hands." Muzan spoke, prompting the halfling to snap her head back and glare at him, teeth grit in anger.
"You bastard-"
Ubuyashiki simply smiled at the womans attempt, letting out a faltered breath before he spoke. "(Y/N)..." The woman turned her head back to him, her eyes soft and her gaze concerned. "..please...be calm..it will be alright." Her heart shattered at this, her eyes once again glossing over with tears and her breath hitching in her throat as the man went back to Muzan. "You're misunderstanding something...about eternity.."
"What?" Muzan demanded coldly.
Kagaya smirked, his bandages finally falling off his face, revealing his tainted and hurt features. The woman tensed. "It is nothing but human thoughts...thoughts last for eternity..they are indestructible."
Muzan narrowed his eyes, fists clenching tighter around the chains. "You're talking complete nonsense."
Kagaya then let out a soft smile, shaking his head and continuing on. "The demon hunters have never died out for a thousand years. True, a lot of unfortunate children have died, but they haven't disappeared at all.." The halfling furrowed her brows, teeth gritting as she watched the scene, unable to speak a word. "You just said..the truth is foolish. Let me prove to you that humans are indestructible..the thought of 'never forgetting those who have taken the lives of peoples loved ones away senselessly' is eternal...and you have never been forgiving..not even once over the last thousand years.."
The halfling furrowed her brows as the sick man continued with his words. "And you, Muzan, have stepped on the tigers tail multiple times..so you are incurring the wrath of the dragon. In essence, you have basically woken a beast that has been resting for a long time..and they absolutely despise you. They will never let you get away.."
All throughout this, the halfling felt a small tug at the back of her clothing. As Muzan was looking towards the sick man and his wife, (Y/N) turned her gaze towards the tug, her eyes lighting up at the sight of (b/n), a small vial of crimson liquid strapped to its back. Her eyes widened.
Ubuyashiki took a pause, all before he continued speaking again, the bird jumping its way beside the woman, causing hardly any sudden movement, all before softly laying the vial in the woman's hands without a sound, her teeth grit, a bead of sweat rolling down the side of her face. "If you kill me, the demon slayers won't feel pain, or an itch. They honestly don't really need me that much. This...connection to human thought is something you probably don't understand, right, Muzan?"
He took a pause, the halfling giving a gentle smile down to the robin before it hopped away into the bushes without another word.
"Because you and your kind..will cease to exist once you die, right?"
Muzan tensed, the halfling feeling the shift in the air, her chest suddenly tight in a different way than before- this time, it felt suffocating. Kagaya chuckled, feeling it too. "A change in the air, am I right?"
"Zip it."
"Yeah, I'm done...Ive said what I wanted to say to you." Ubuyashiki mumbled out, his voice hardly audible at this point, Amane holding him close as the two children from before finished their playing, making their way back to the doors. "But can i say one last thing?"
Muzan took a few steps closer to Ubuyashiki, dragging the halfling with him, forcing her to stumble and grunt. "I said that they honestly didn't need me that much..but that doesn't mean my death won't be inconsequential..I am fortunately, yet undeservedly loved by many demon slayers, my pillars and my guard, in particular..." The halfling felt herself fall to her knees once again, her teeth grit, but the vial hidden in her clenched palm. "So, if I die, the morale of the demon hunters will be higher than ever..." He paused, suddenly turning to the woman, her body hunched over slightly, still hiding the vial from the man above her. "And, one last thing, I am truly sorry for the pain you have suffered, (Y/N). Getting to know you was a true pleasure.."
The woman lifted her head to him, lip quivering slightly as she heard those words, eyes glossing over for the last time. "Kagaya...you can't-!" The woman tried to stand on her feet, but once again, the demon forced her back down to her knees. She reached desperately for the vial to drink, but it was only until she saw Amane gently shake her head, she realised...
Kagaya was destined to die here.
At this moment.
Right now.
The halfling thought she was given this to fight off Muzan at the last moment, but now..by the small shake of the woman's head...she realised.
This vial wasn't for now..it was for later.
She was going to have to watch her best friend die.
Her eyes widened, gritting her teeth, attempting to move again, but suddenly, Muzans claws digged harshly into her back, stabbing through her once again. She grunted, eyes wide, tears finally falling from her eyes and a weep falling from her lips, all as Muzan forcefully removed his claws, her blood staining the floor once again, but this time, it was in her home.
Her true home..
"That's enough, both of you." Muzan coldly stated as the
