AVERY COULDN'T STAND THE HOSPITAL ANYMORE. The past few days were spent at the hospital, the feeling of boredome becoming a little too familiar for the girl, and she couldn't take it anymore. She desperately needed to leave the hospital, she couldn't stand looking at the plain white walls, the disgusting food they would bring her three times per day that she would always just look at but never take a bite and always the same boring old channels on the tiny TV. The only thing keeping her from dying from her tedious routine was the visits she received everyday.
Every single day someone she knew would come visit her, and she would finally have someone to talk to. Her parents came to the hospital everyday, checking in on her and talking to her. Oh, how she missed her parents deeply. Everyday they insisted on sleeping at the hospital, not wanting to leave their daughter alone, and even though Avery wanted it badly, every single time she told them to go home, knowing that she would be fine and that they couldn't sleep at the hospital, since it wasn't comfortable for them, and she wasn't going to make them suffer, she would be fine anyways.
Finney visited her every now and then, always bringing new games he had at home for them to play together and telling all about his life ever since they escaped the basement to the girl, and Avery always listened to his stories with the biggest and brightest smile on her face. They would always talk and have many laughs together, and occasionally watch those same boring channels on the TV together, making fun of the cartoons. But every single time news of their kidnapping came on, Finney would snatch the remote and quickly skip to the next channel. He knew the last thing that Avery needed right now was to relieve their horrible experience through reporters. He knew he wouldn't want that, and he did not want to make Avery upset. Finney wanted to keep her safe and care for her, and he wante to do everything with her, even though she was still stck at the hospital. Finney hadn't gone back to school yet. He didn't want to start without Avery, it felt wrong to start without her. And honestly, he was scared to go back. He didn't know how his life would be once he got back to school. Would he continue to suffer bullying? Or would his classmates treat him differently all of a sudden? He really hoped it was the latter option.
Oh, but Donna's visits were the best. The first visit Donna payed to the hospital to see Avery mostly consisted on the two crying their eyes out, the two explaining how much they missed each other. Donna couldn't be happier that her best friend was back and that they could finally be together again. The girl honestly thought her best friend had died when she found out Avery had been stabbed and had been taken to the hospital. She cried horrors that night, only to find out that her best friend was actually very well, and was deffinetly not dead. But then, ever since Donna visited Avery, they spent each and every minute gossiping and just talking and laughing about the most random topics they could think of, just like they used to. The two missed each other and they couldn't be happier that they were finally reunited and could go back to being the best friends they always were, because neither of the two best friends could ever imagine what their life would be like without the other. To them, it was non-existent. Donna was always in Avery's life, and Avery was always in Donna's. They were indeed platonic soulmates, and now they were sure of it.
But the visits she hated the most during her stay at the hospital were the reporters. At one point of the day Avery would always hear vans pulling up outside the hospital, and cameras flashing. At first she had no idea what it was or who's van it was. But now, she had gotten used to the sound and couldn't stand it anymore. Reporters would try to get inside the hospital trying to get information from Avery about her kidnapping experience. Most of the times security and Avery's parents wouldn't let any of them get inside or anywhere near the girl's hospital room. But there were a few times where one single reporter managed to somehow escape security and get inside the hospital, but they never knew which room Avery was in and before she knew it, they were being taken away from the hospital. There was this one time where somehow a reporter managed to get through security and managed to figure out which room Avery Brown was staying in, and Avery was totally shaken up when a random stranger walked inside her room and started bombarding her with questions about what had happened while she had been kidnapped and invading her personal space. Avery felt violated and had no idea what to do, you could see by the look in her eyes that she was frightened by the total stranger inside her hospital room. Trust me, the last thing you want is to have unknown people asking you questions about a traumatic experience that you just had while you are still healing.
...
It had been about a few days since she had been in the hospital, and even though it wasn't for the longest time, the only thing Avery wanted right now was to go back home and get back to her normal life. Avery had always hated school, but right now, it was one of the only things she desired.
While she was playing around with the disgusting looking food on her plate, a nurse and a doctor came inside her room. As soon as they did, her parents sat up from the two chairs in the room, but Avery simply lifted her head, looking at the two presences that had entered the room.
"Hello, Mrs and Mr Brown. Avery." The male doctor nodded, greeting the family in the room. Avery was quite familiar with the nurse and the doctor, she had spoken to the nurse quite a few times and they had actually bonded while she was staying there. And the doctor always came to check on Avery and even though she wasn't as close to him as she was with the nurse, she managed to have a few conversations with him.
"Do not worry, I bring good news." The doctor continued. A heavy weight was lifted from the room and Avery's parents let out a big relieved sigh.
"Avery has been in this hospital for a few days since her incident, and I am glad to say that she has been recovering incredibly well for a girl her age. And you two, parents, can now finally take her home." The doctor explained.
Avery let out the biggest smile she let out in days. She was finally going home and her life was finally going to become normal again. She was going to see everybody, go to school and hangout with everyone! She couldn't be more excited. Her parents hugged each other in joy, and quickly rushed to hug their daughter too. The family of three were the happiest they had ever been since Avery Brown had gone missing.
And in this day, Avery Brown finally went home. And her life would start to become normal again.
...
Avery's parents quickly packed everything up and started to get ready to finally head home. Avery had changed into some clothes her parents had brought for her from her house and she waited by her room door so they could leave.
Even though Avery hadn't thought about the reporters and how they would be when she left her room, her parents did, and they were extremely worried. It was the middle of the day and there were definetly reporters and reporter vans and cameras waiting outside for the infamous girl that was hiding inside the hospital. But there wasn't much they could do to stop the hundreds of reporters.
Avery had the brightest smile on her face as her and her parents left her room. But as soon as her eyes caught the big vans waiting outside, and the cameras flashing towards where she was and the microphones waiting for her, her smile quickly dropped. She stopped in her tracks, feeling the anxiety creep up on her as she imagined the scenario of her walking outside and questions about her recent event being thrown at her face and bringing so many unwanted memories that she had been trying to push away the entire time she was at the hospital. Her breathing started to increase speed and she felt as if she was going to faint. She wasn't prepared for this, she couldn't go outside and face everything that was waiting for her. She couldn't face reality.
Her parents soon noticed how their daughter was no longer beside them, and when they looked behind them, there she was. Her skin pale as she stood still with her chest rising up and down as she stared at the hospital door. They quickly rushed to her, dropping everything in their hands to focus on their daughter.
"Hey, hey Aves, sweetie? Hey, it's okay!" Her mother spoke, grabbing her daughters face gently trying to get her to calm down, and look away from the door but it didn't help much because tears started to slip down the girl's cheeks as she shook her head hysterically in response.
"Aves, we're not gonna let them do anything to you. We're here to protect you." Her father spoke up putting a hand on her shoulder.
Avery wasn't ready for this. She was just a 13 year old girl, she was barely a teenager, she couldn't handle this. She hadn't thought it would be like this once she left the hospital. She was so excited to leave and go to school that she didn't think about how she would have to go through this. Avery shut her eyes closed as she attempted to calm herself down. But suddenly, the image of a certain, very important boy popped into her mind.
Avery couldn't help but think of Finney Blake. She didn't know why but he was the first thing that popped into her mind when she closed her eyes. And somehow, the image of him comforted her and she started to calm down. She thought about Finney and how they have experienced the kidnapping together, and even though she didn't want to, she started to relieve everything that had happened to them in that basement. From the moment they were thrown into that van, to the moment where they walked outside that place, together. For some reason, reliving everything that happened, helped her. Thinking about the experience she had with Finney made her feel stronger and it felt as if he was here with her, and it gave her the confidence to get over her problems. She thought about the good things that happened with her and Finney too and it made her feel better than before. But reliving her experience in her head gave her some type of closure. This entire time she had been avoiding the topic and never going back or talking about what had happened in that basement, but now that it came to her mind it made her feel better than ever. It made her feel proud and with Finney it made her feel safe. It made her feel glad that she had him to support her all along. And when she opened her eyes, she felt the feeling she always feels when she is together with him, and she knew that she could do this.
She looked at her parents and wiped her tears away and nodded at them, reassuring them that she was okay. Her parents were more confused than ever, but they didn't want to pressure her into telling them what had happened, so they just grabbed their things from the floor and slowly headed to the door beside their daughter.
Each step they took Avery could hear the sound of the flashing cameras getting louder, and she could hear the sound of the voices coming from the reporters, but this time she wasn't scared or overwhelmed, she was ready.
The minute they walked through that hospital door the flashing lights coming from the cameras instantly blinded her, forcing her to shut her eyes, but she continued to walk forwards towards the car. The reporters around her shouted questions at her but she didn't care, she ignored every single one of them and didn't let any of them affect her. Soon, they got inside the car, and the cameras continued to flash into the car, but Avery didn't dare give them another look.
The car started and the voices of the reporters and all the flashing lights faded away, and Avery knew they had left the hospital.
She was finally ready to face reality, and she couldn't help but smile at the thought of the boy who helped her get through this all.
