IT WAS THE DAY. The day Avery Brown had been waiting for since forever. The day Finney Blake had been dreading since forever. It was the day the two teens would finally go back to school after what had happened to them.
While Avery couldn't be more excited and as she did everything in her morning routine with a smile, Finney couldn't be more anxious about it, overthinking everything. He had created many different scenarios about how school would go, but he wasn't sure if any of them would be accurate or not. The only thing preventing him from staying at home and never showing his face to his school again was Avery. He knew the girl was definetly going to school and the thought of letting her go alone made him feel unloyal, and horrible, and he knew that if Avery was beside him he would be able to go through his day better than ever. But he hoped the girl would stay by his side, hoped that she wouldn't leave him all alone, because after all, Avery and Finn were never really friends at school so, what if it goes back to being the way it was?
Avery hugged her parents goodbye and then left her house. As she started walking, she couldn't help but feel nervous about going to school. She had been excited all along just by thinking about it, but now that it was actually happening, that it wasn't her imagination or thoughts, things started to become real, and there were many possibilites on what could happen. She felt her feet move slower as she hesitated to continue walking to school. But she knew she couldn't feel this way, so she tried pushing her thoughts out of her head and continued her walk to school, thinking only on the positive things. Nothing bad was gonna happen, right?
...
Finney walked by his sister's side on his entire walk to school. His sister talked and talked the entire journey, but Finney didn't listen to a single word. He was too busy imagining what school was going to be like and what would happen to him while he was there. He kept over thinking about every little thing.
"And then, I was like- Finney, are you even listening to me?" The girl stopped her ranting, noticing how her brother would just murmur sounds every now and then.
"Mhm." Finney replied, still locked in his thoughts.
"Finney!"
"What?!" The boy shouted, spooked at his sister's outerburts and finally getting snapped off his thoughts.
"What's going on with you? You're like lost in another universe or something." Gwen asked rolling her eyes and muttering the last part but still loud enough for Finney to hear.
"What? It's nothing."
"Finney." His sister pressured.
"Gwen, it's nothing!" The boy laughed, avoiding his sister's gaze. Gwen hesitated and stared at her brother, trying to read his face and figure out what was actually going on.
"Hey, everything's gonna be fine, you know." She told him, knowing what was bothering him.
"Yeah. Yeah, I know. Gwen, I'm fine." Gwen knew he wasn't really telling the truth but she knew he wouldn't budge anymore. So, she soon gave up, knowing her brother was too stuborn and was never going to let it go and tell her what was actually happening to him and all those thoughts running through his head.
"Okay. So, what's going on with you and Avery, huh?" Gwen asked changing the subject and nudging Finney's side with her shoulder. Finney's face instantly became pink with embarrasment and he couldn't help but smile.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He spoke trying to hide his smile.
"Oh, yeah, okay. You literally rushed to the hospital whenever you had the chance and whenever I visited Avery with you it was clear there was a spark between you two."
"I don't know, I guess when we experienced the kidnapping together it just kind of brought us closer, and we may have kissed and I told her how I felt and she feels the same. And when I thought I was going to lose her, I-I don't know it just felt horrible." Finney's smile dropped as he remembered her slipping out of his hold and her breath stopping.
Gwen didn't know what to answer to that. She couldn't imagine how Finney felt like in that moment, the moment when he thought Avery Brown had died in his arms. But Finney was glad that the girl did not die, and he tried his best to not think about it again.
...
Avery soon notcied the familiar structure getting closer and closer. Her breath got caught in her throat and she gripped her bag tighter. Even though nobody could see her since she was still a few feet away, it felt as if everyone's eyes were on her, watching her every move. She froze in her spot as she closed her eyes shut. She knew there wasn't much that could happen to her, but she couldn't help but feel nervous.
When Finney was a few feet away from the school, he told Gwen to keep on walking and go inside without him. She hesitated on leaving her brother behind, but he reassured her that he would be fine, so she left. Finney was scared to go in, and he felt stupid for thinking that way since he had just survived The Grabber, he had been the first survivor and the last victim to escape, together with Avery. He thought it was stupid to feel scared of some school, and he tried to push that feeling down as deep as he could. But even though it kind of worked, that feeling was still there, and so were the nervous butterflies in his stomach. But as he stood a few feet away from his school, his eyes caught someone familiar, Avery Brown.
Her long, wavy, soft hair moved along to the movement of the wind as she stood still, her bag gripped tightly in her hold. Finney couldn't help but relax at the sight of her and he felt the desire to be near her.
Avery still had her eyes closed, when suddenly she felt someone touch her shoulder. Her eyes quickly opened wide and she turned around, searching whoever had snapped her out of her trance. When she saw the familiar pair of brown eyes, she quickly relaxed. It was Finney, the boy she had been wishing was by her side right at this moment. She didn't wait a second before wrapping her arms around him, embracing him in a hug. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she stood on tiptoe so she was able to reach him and because of the excitement of seeing him. The last time she had seen him hadn't been that long ago, he came when she was at the hospital, but seeing him outside of the hospital or the basement was an overwhelming feeling of happiness. Finney smiled into the hug, glad that he was with the girl of his dreams and that she loved him just as much as he loved her.
"You're here! Come on, let's go inside." The girl squealed, leaving the hug. Finney's mood slightly decreased at the reminder of going inside the building, and getting inside school. But he knew that sooner or later he would have to go in, so he decided to do it now that he had the presence of the girl he loved the most in the world.
They held each other's hands and one step after the other they walked inside the building. As soon as the doors opened all heads inside snapped towards them. Mouths dropped, stares were given, fingers were pointed, students stopped in their tracks and even whispers went around as the two teens walked in.
"Oh, shit. That's them."
"Is that Avery Brown?"
"They were the ones that killed the Grabber."
"I heard she was stabbed."
"How did they kill the Grabber?!"
"Wait, are they together?"
Those were the words being sent around by the other students as they stared at the two survivors. Avery cringed as she heard some of the thing her classmates were saying, she could obviously hear them, they weren't making much effort to speak in a low tone. Even though Avery felt nervous, she wasn't letting it show. She didn't want people to show her pitty, she just wanted to go back to normal. She thought her relationship with the people in the school would change, that people would be treating her like she was better than them or avoiding her just because she escaped the Grabber, and she didn't want that, she wanted everything and everyone to be normal, just like it was, because thats how it worked for her and thats how she loved it.
Finney was the exact opposite of Avery. He was extremly nervous, and his face was showing it all. He wished people would treat him differently, treat him better. Not even once had anyone put in any effort to talk to him, no one ever wanted to be his friend and he would suffer from his bullies everyday, and never would anyone even bat an eye, they would just ignore it when the boy was being beaten up and pretend like nothing was happening. He hoped it would change, that people would at least talk to him, but he hoped more than ever that he wouldn't get hurt anymore, wouldn't get bullied.
The more he walked inside the building, the closer he got to his bullies. He was sure that they were going to come sprinting at him and beat him up, or at least give him one of those dirty looks they always gave him. But instead, when he walked by, the only thing they did was straighten their posture, and their mouths slightly fell. They were respecting him, Finney was being respected and he was never going to get hurt by them again. He couldn't help but smile triumphantly, he had finally done it, he beat his bullies, and he did it without violence.
Unfortunately, Avery and Finney had to seperate. Their first periods were completely different, they didn't have the same classes. So, when they got close to their classes they abruptly stopped in their tracks. They looked at each other, both of them knowing they had to part ways for a little while.
"I'll see you later, okay?" Avery told him in a low voice. Even though Finney didn't want to part ways, he knew they had to, so he gave her a warm smile and nodded. They were about to walk away when Avery quickly jumped onto him, giving him another hug. When they let go Avery grabbed his face and looked him deep in the eyes and pulled him in, giving him a small peck on the lips. She felt his touch and his scent and she was going to hold onto both of those things until they had their next moment together and she would be able to see him again. It felt as if time had frozen, and they wished to be stuck like this forever.
The two noticed that this would be a new chapter of their lives. They had been lucky to escape the Grabber and they were going to be able to live the rest of their lives as they wanted. They were ready to close the past events and were ready to open up their lives for a new chapter and new, and better events that would happen. They were going to live the rest of their lives with a whole different perspective, and they were going to do this together.
They both let go and went to their classes, parting their ways. They had now closed off a door to their horrible past, and together, they were going to face a new chapter.
