" in the heat of your electric touch "
ELLIE PACED AS Gamora tried to get in contact with Rocket. At last, the transmitter beeped to life, catching everyone's attention.
"Finally! Rocket?" Gamora called into it.
"Keep that transmitter nearby, so I can find you. We're in an old piece of construction equipment Yondu once used to slice open the Bank of A'askavaria." Rocket explained.
"Ego's unhinged," Gamora explained as they all left the room to go find Peter and Blake.
As they were running towards the glowing building it erupted into a blinding light. Ellie quickened her pace as she blocked her face from the light while the others stopped in surprise.
"Ellie!" Drax boomed as the group ran to catch up to her.
Ellie hadn't heard him, her mind clouded by the fear of what could be happening to Blake...and Peter of course.
Finally, the group made it to the doors, Drax kicking it open. Ego turned to face the group, distracting him from the incoming ship that soon smashed into the large window above.
"Hey there, jackass!" Yondu yelled before the ship crashed into the ground Ego stood.
A glowing tentacle unwrapped itself around Blake from his neck down. As Blake fell onto the floor he coughed and rubbed his throat. Ellie quickly jumped over the debris from the crash and rushed over to him.
"Blake!" Ellie called, sliding onto her knees beside him. She put her hand on his neck, below his ear, and her other hand put on his cheek. Bringing his attention up to her as she checked him for injuries. "Come on." She told him gently as he struggled to catch his breath. Blake nodded tiredly as she grabbed his hand and pulled him to the ship.
"I am Groot!" Groot cheered as Ellie guided Blake into the open door of the ship.
"Good to see you too, bud." Ellie said sweetly to Groot as she followed after Blake.
"What are you doing? You could've killed us all!" Drax yelled.
"Uh...'Thank you, Rocket'?" Rocket mocked.
"We had it under control." Drax defended.
"We did not. That is only an extension of his true self. He will be back soon." Mantis told them.
"What's Smurfette doing here?" Peter asked as Gamora helped him into the ship.
"Whatever I need to do to get a damn ride home." Nebula replied.
"She tried to murder me!" Rocket accused as he pointed a finger at her.
"Join the club," Ellie added.
"I saved you, you stupid fox!" Nebula retorted at Rocket.
"He's not a fox." Gamora told her.
"I am Groot." Groot defended.
"I'm not a raboon, either." Rocket told Groot.
"I am Groot." Groot corrected.
"'Racoon.' Whatever." Rocket shrugged. "Els." Rocket called. Ellie looked away from Blake and turned to Rocket. "You okay?" He asked.
"Yeah," She replied with a nod. "I'm okay."
"How do we kill a Celestial?" Drax asked as glowing tentacles wrapped around the ship, holding it against the planet.
"There's a center to him. His brain, his soul, whatever it is. Some sort of protective shell." Peter explained, starting to go up the ladder to the control center of the ship.
"It's in the caverns below the surface." Mantis added.
Yondu tried to boost the ship away from the ground, only making it a few yards before the tentacles pulled the ship back down. Ellie grabbed onto Blake, who stabilized them against the wall as the ship rocked and shook beneath their feet. Ellie let go of Blake and grabbed onto the wall, pulling herself towards the seat next to Rockets.
"Thrusters are out." She heard Yondu call out.
"Guess I should be glad me and Blake were skinny kids. Otherwise, you'd have delivered us to this maniac." Peter told him as he worked to fix the thrusters. Ellie fell into the chair next to Rocket's and strapped herself in before helping Rocket prepare their defenses.
"You still reckon that's the reason I kept you two around, you idiot?"
"That's what you told us, you old doofus." Peter retorted.
"Well, once I figured out what happened to them other kids I wasn't just gonna hand you over."
"You said you were gonna eat us." Blake called from the lower floor.
"That was being funny!"
"Not to us!" Peter defended.
"You people have issues." Rocket called up to them.
"Well of course I have issues." Peter told him. He pointed to the enormous glowing skeletal-like man groaning in mid-air as its glowing eyes glared at the ship. "That's my freakin' father!" Peter tapped a few more buttons before he grabbed the second steering wheel. "Thrusters are back up."
Ellie squeezed her eyes shut for the moment they flew into Ego. She opened them just as they went through the window, as they entered the air they slowly turned downward, the ship falling towards the ground of the planet. Groot flew past Ellie's face and she quickly grabbed him before she smashed against the glass.
"We should be going up." Yondu told Peter, wanting nothing more than to leave the planet as fast as possible.
"We can't. Ego wants to eradicate the universe as we know it. We have to kill him." Peter informed him.
"Hell yeah!" Ellie cheered as she set Groot onto her lap, the small creature quickly climbing into the girl's jacket pocket.
"Rocket! El!" Peter called.
"Got it!" The two replied before Peter had to give the order. They pressed buttons above their heads, and Rocket got ready to do the laser firing, while Ellie pressed her hand against the side wall, electricity flowing through the ship-scaring Yondu for a moment before making a crackling shield across it just before they broke into the planet's layers.
"So, we're saving the galaxy again?" Rocket asked as Ellie flipped more switches for more of the laser guns to reach the front of the ship.
"I guess," Peter replied.
"Awesome! We're really gonna be able to jack up our price if we're two-time Galaxy savers." Rocket said.
"I seriously can't believe that's where your mind goes." Peter scoffed.
"It was just a random thought, man. I thought we were friends. Of course, I care about the planets, and the buildings, and all the animals on the planets."
"And the people," Peter added.
"Meh." Rocket shrugged.
"Hey!" Ellie yelled in fake offense.
"You're the only one I can tolerate Els, you know that."
"The crabby puppy is so cute. He makes me wanna die!" Mantis giggled.
Ellie and Rocket slowly looked at each other, Rocket with a glare and Ellie holding in a laugh.
After a few more moments the energy to the lasers faltered, causing the ship to smash into the last layer of the crust. Because of the shake, Ellie let go of the wall, the electric field she possessed crackled away from the ship as they hit another rock with their side, breaking the door.
"Whoa." Ellie dragged out in a whisper as they all took in the sight before them. After the last layer they broke through, the center of Ego's planet was attached to the other layers in arm-like branches, connected to the crust. Glowing blue veins pulsing with light throughout the structure.
"There," Mantis stated. "That's Ego's core."
"That ore is thick, you two." Gamora told them.
"We got it." Ellie reassured her as she pulled on a metal cover, exposing various colors of wires. She pulled out one of her daggers and cut a couple of the wires.
Rocket pressed the keypad on his armchair, collecting all the laser beams to the front sets of the ship.
"Almost there," Ellie said to Rocket as she put her hand into the open panel, gathering some of the cut wires in her fist as she pressed a keypad in front of her.
"What are you doing?" Blake asked as he grabbed onto the back of Ellie's chair, looking over her shoulder.
"What the hell are you doing over here?" Rocket asked in a yell as he looked over his shoulder. "What the hell is he doing over here?" He asked Ellie as he pointed at the boy with his thumb.
"We must hurry." Mantis warned. "It will not take Ego long to find us."
"Keep it steady." Rocket called up to Peter and Yondu as Ellie continued to press the keypad, the power from her hand starting to converge into the laser's power. Rocket grinned as he got ready to fire.
Ellie's hair stood up a little as she surged her power through the wires. The lasers went off and began to melt into Ego's core.
"We drill into the center, we kill him!" Peter informed everyone. Ellie grunted as she tried to send more power through, her hair rising and static electricity sparking from her, making Blake take a step back. Groot laughed as if he was being tickled from her pocket, a tingling feeling growing through his body from the electricity.
"Oh, hell!" Yondu yelled as he looked out the side window. Ellie looked over and saw dozens of ships flying their way.
Peter and Quill pulled away from the core, a blast from one of the enemy ships blowing the laser generator. The damaged blast done to the weaponry traveled to Ellie through the wires. She yelped in pain and quickly retracted her hand, revealing a burn across her palm.
Peter steered the ship away from the blasts, but when he twisted over, the open door caused Gamora, Drax, and Mantis to fall out. Blake held on to Ellie's chair for dear life.
She winced while Rocket groaned in frustration.
"Why aren't you firing the lasers?" Peter called.
"They blew out the generator." Rocket replied as Ellie and Rocket got out of their chairs. "I think I packed a small detonator."
"A detonator is worthless without explosives." Nebula told him.
"Well, we got these." Rocket said as he held up the harbulary batteries.
"Is that thing strong enough to kill Ego?" Blake asked as Peter came down the ladder.
"If it is, it'll cause a chain reaction throughout his entire nervous system." Rocket explained.
"Meaning what?" Peter asked.
"The entire planet will explode." Ellie replied as she clutched her hand to her chest. Groot grew a branch to Rocket and transferred from Ellie's pocket to Rocket's backpack.
Ellie attached her aero-rig to her back and pressed it, it expanded over her jacket over her chest. Peter doing the same, he tossed Ellie his backup aero-rig. Blake pressed the button just below his ear and a mask grew around his face, one similar to Peter's.
"Here," Ellie said as she turned Blake around and attached the aero-rig to the back of his sweatshirt. She pressed it, turning him back around as it spread over his chest. "There, now you can fly." She told him with a short smile.
"We'll have to get out of here fast. I rigged a timer." Rocket explained as he got ready to get off the ship.
"Go!" Peter told them, his mask expanding over his face.
Rocket–with Groot on his back-, Ellie, Blake, and Peter all ran out of the ship, their aero-rigs activating as they suspended in the air.
They flew into the hole that they had started in the core. Ellie landed successfully on her knee, but the others tumbled into the hole. Once Ellie waited for the others to get to their feet, Rocket pulled out a flashlight, examining the metal around the core.
"The metals too thick. For the bomb to work, we'd actually need to place it on Ego's core. And our fat butts ain't gonna fit through those tiny holes."
"Well..." Peter trailed off, looking over at Groot, who had found his way to Ellie's shoulder where he twirled in her hair.
"That's a terrible idea." Rocket said flatley.
"Which is the only kind of idea we have left." Peter replied.
"Unbelievable." Rocket groaned, holding his hand out for Groot, who happily climbed on. "Rocket do this. Rocket do that." Rocket mocked as he walked down the tunnel.
"What a day." Peter sighed as he turned out to the fight. "See you on the other side." He said to the two teens before taking off.
Ellie took a step to leap off the edge, but Blake quickly grabbed her wrist.
"Wait." He called, making Ellie turn to him. He reached into his back jeans pocket and pulled out a white piece of fabric.
He turned her hand that he was already holding and carefully tied the piece of fabric around her hand, protecting her burn.
"Listen," Blake started carefully. "I'm sorry about earlier. I shouldn't have put you in that position. I didn't take in your feelings and I didn't ask...I-I just really like you-" A smile began to grow on Ellie's lips as she listened to him ramble. Something about the nervousness in his voice made her giddy inside. "-and I know that's crazy since we haven't known each other that long. A-and it's okay if you don't like me the same way."
Blake stared at her hand. He had already finished tying the fabric and was now brushing his thumb along her knuckles. He wondered for a moment if the rest of her skin was this soft.
Ellie brought her other hand to his neck and pressed the button below his ear, the mask disappearing into the device to reveal his face. She kept her hand there as her heart swelled at the crease in his forehead from his furrowed brows, and his eyes that latched onto hers.
Ellie went onto her tip-toes because of his larger height compared to her, her eyes fluttering closed as she gently placed her lips against his. Blake melted into the kiss, his eyes closing as he leaned down so Ellie didn't have to try so hard to get to his height. Blake felt a tingling sensation vibrate from Ellie's lips, their hair rising together as a spark shocked between them. Blake did not mind it one bit, quite enjoying the feeling it gave him.
Ellie pulled away as they heard an explosion go off from a ship further away from them.
"Let's go kick some ass." She said with a grin. Ellie placed a quick peck on Blake's cheek before pressing his mask button again and jumping off the ledge.
