Things hadn't changed at all over the past few days. Heck, it never did. Today your were sitting sadly on the brick wall along the school yard with Dib. "You haven't been yourself lately. Is everything alright?" He asked. You shook your head. "I'm fine. Just, a little messed up in the head I guess." You replied softly. "I think we all are at this point." He said smiling sadly. You smiled back.
"Hey are you....free tonight? If so wanna meet on Melancholy Hill?" You asked. He nodded in agreement before he went off to go look after Zim.
Melancholy Hill was a place you and Dib cherished deeply.
(Yes I know this is Gorillaz song reference but eh. Fite me)
It was a Hill that overlooked the city and the stars were always clear. You and Dib would always explain your problems to each other or just sit there in silence to calm down. You needed time on this hill.
It wasn't until Zim came over to you with a giant pimple on the side of his head jiggling up and down...up, and then down. Soon you felt lost into nothingness slowly going into a trance. You snapped back though, realizing he had stopped it from jiggling. You looked at him confusedly. He caught on to this and defended himself quickly. "It would be useless on you anyway." He scoffed walking away to hypnotize other children.
Did he...spare you? No, he was always bent on domination. Maybe he did care for you deep down. No, that was an odd thought. It was too good to be true.
Later that night, the two of you were on the hill lying on the grass looking at the stars. "So he really hypnotized you?" You asked quietly staring at the Big Dipper clearly visible in the sky. "Yeah, he also got top secret information from me too. A real bummer if you ask me. Then I had to clean his pimple puss." He said cringing. "Yeah....that was pretty disgusting." You said shivering. Things were silent for a moment.
"Did he hypnotize you too?" He asked. "No....not really. Well, he did at first, then stopped and walked away." You said. "What?! That doesn't make any sense! Maybe he's using you for something later-"
"No Dib." You said cutting him off a little irritated and tired. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap." You said shrinking into your sweater out of embarrassment. "It's ok. I'm used to it. Plus, you almost never get mad so I know you didn't mean it."
Yeah. 'Almost Never.'
As the night got darker, the two of you rode your two passenger bike back home. "Have a nice night Dib." You said waving. "You too!" He said before entering his house. For once you could actually go to sleep without anything bad happening. This might have been one of the nicest nights ever.
The next day, you sat in your desk near the end of the day as Jessica passed out flyers. You grabbed it and read it."Skool Dance?" Your heart pounded. "Do I have to go?" Jessica turned around and scoffed. "Um yeah. Everyone has to. It's a school budget thing." She said putting a hand on her hip. "But we have those...Poop Bars. Plus, a dance would just be expensive! That just makes money factors worse." Ms. Bitters looked up from her book. "You poor naive child." You frowned. "And besides. Any normal person would go AND bring a date." This seemed to get Zim's attention as he immediately rushed over there. "Then I will attend this dance AND have a date." Desperate to appear "Normal" He grabbed your hand. "And the Y/N stink will accompany me." And in unison, the whole class yelled "WHAT?!" Including yourself. The bell ring and Dib ran to you. "Y/N?! Did you agree to this?!" He yelled. Of course you didn't, you just didn't know how to respond to all of this. You ripped your hand from Zim's and ran out of the class room quickly going to your locker and escaping the school. Of course Dib had to follow you. "Y/N?!" You froze and then sighed. You figured it was better to face the music than anything else.
"Did you seriously agree to this?! I thought you were on my side!" You clenched your fists. "No Dib, I didn't." You turned to face him. "I don't know why he chose me. Maybe because I'm the nicest to him? I don't know." You said shrinking in your sweater tearing up. Dib's expression softened. He realized that you would never abandon him like that and he was probably overreacting. "You're right. I'm sorry...wait. This is perfect! Why didn't I think of this before!" He said exclaiming.
You wiped your tears away. "What do you mean?" You asked. "You can go undercover for me! Use your kindness to your advantage!" Your expression flattened. "Yeah...I'll think about it." You said smiling weakly. "Alright then, see ya tomorrow." He said waving goodbye. You waved back, sighing sadly.
As you got home, you threw your bag to the side of the room and put your hands on your face, running your fingers through your hair out of pure stress. "Bad day huh?" You looked at the couch only to find your mother flipping through channels, finally giving up and turning it off. She patted the seat next to her beckoning you to come and sit.
"Tell me all about it sister." You sat next to her and gave her the whole deal and situation. She nodded and listened to every word. "Have you ever considered that Zim might have a crush on you?" You blushed a dark shade of red and shrunk in your seat a bit. "M-mom, you know-you know I'm not interested in relationships now." You stuttered out. "I know hon. But he's...foreign. He might not know how to deal with these emotions so that seemed like the only effective way to do so." She said. You thought about it for a moment. Maybe she was right. So you decided to go and talk to Zim. "Can I go over to Zim's and talk to him? I promise I'll be back for dinner." You ask grabbing your jacket. "Yes. Just please be back soon and most importantly, be safe." You smiled at your Mother. "I will." And with that you walked out to grab your bike and ride to Zim's house.
As soon as you got there the sight shocked you. Dib was in terrible condition with tubes in his neck and his skin rough and cracked, on the ground in front of the door. You immediately threw your bike down and ran to him turning him over to face you. "Dib...?" You choked out, tears forming in your eyes. And in hardly a second, his eyes closed and his breathing stopped. Your eyes went wide and your breathing began to become shaky. "No-god no Dib please stay with me." You say hugging him as you began to cry. There was no use of calling 911.
He was dead.
For a good minute, you held your best and only friend in your arms until there was a flash of light. You fell backwards, your back hitting the concrete ground definitely leaving you with some scratches and bruises. You lied on your back, unable to get up from the pain. There was a loud crashing sound followed by large stomping noises and stuff falling. You just lied there, not moving. "Do I even want to know?" You said flatly. No, you didn't want to know. Soon, there another flash and you heard Dib's voice in the distance. "Have I always been like this? Yes, I have haven't I! My whole life! Good old Dib-like Dib!" You got up wincing in pain as your back, knees and shoulders were covered in cuts and forming bruises.
You then saw Dib being beaten up by the lawn gnomes. You sighed and walked over there kicking the gnomes out of the way dragging Dib out in front of the fence. Your eyes hurt as well from all the crying you did, leaving them a very bright red. Things were silent for a moment until you hugged him tightly. "You idiot! I was so freaking worried about you, don't you ever do that again damn it!" You say. He hugged you awkwardly back and as soon as you pulled away, he noticed your appearance. "Y/N what happened? You look like hell." You got back on your bike ready to leave. You faced him one more time before you left.
"Yeah? I just got back."
