As the days passed, the dance grew closer and closer. Fortunately you talked to Zim, and he hesitantly explained why he even bothered to take you. But, you agreed to go anyway. Now you just had to figure out what to wear and god that was going to be a challenge. See, you didn't really like dresses, but you didn't really have any other options since the dance was literally tonight. You settled on a very simple (favorite color) Dress along with a black cardigan since you didn't always really like to show your shoulders.
(Am I the only one who has that problem? Like I can't wear dresses without feeling really exposed and insecure. Nevermind I'll continue)
And, the pinnacle of your dance outfit, matching converse. It was in fact the most comfortable shoes you had.
(You don't have to wear this stuff and you can imagine what you want but I kept it pretty basic.)
As you brushed out your hair, you heard you cell phone vibrate. "Hello?" You answered. "Y/N? It's me Dib. Are you ready for our plan?" You sighed. "I thought we concluded that this was YOUR plan silly." You said smirking a bit. "Aw come on! I thought you were on my side here! Ya know, we were gonna pull a Ocean's 11!" You shook your head smiling. "Dib this is a skool dance. Not a casino heist." You heard him sigh from the phone. "I know. I thought you would appreciate the reference though. You are the movie master at school." You smiled once again. "Well, I appreciated it don't worry. I gotta go, I'm gonna pick up Zim. See ya there!" You hung up, put your cell phone in your purse and went into the living room.
Your parents were sitting on the couch, presumably waiting for you. "Alright honey, since we're your parents we're gonna give you the whole talk since your going to your first dance ok?" Your father said as you listened and nodded quietly. You listened, and some of the stuff made you blush intensely. Who and why would they do stuff like this? All you knew was that you weren't going to and that's final. You were more nervous than anything else, and just hoped that this night would go normally.
You arrived at Zim's house, and as you walked to the door, your eyes followed the lawn gnomes. They always scared you honestly. Before you could knock on the door, you heard the sound of yelling and stuff being knocked down. You just stood there politely until things got silent so you can knock. After about a minute, you knocked softly. Zim answered, but he didn't look any different from before, only the fact that he had a bow tie on. "Well...you look fancy." You said shyly scratching the back of your head. "You look..." he looked at his hand and squinted. "Not ugly!" He said confidently proud in his efforts. Even if they were kinda poor.
"Thank you I guess. Well, I think we should get going." You suggested. He nodded and followed you as you walked to the school.
As you arrived the sight threw you off guard. Knowing your school, you thought it would be a boring bland dance in a stinky room with no lights and a plastic radio projecting music. What you found was an actual dance floor, DJ, colorful lights and snacks.
"Holy Toledo." Was all you could make out. You payed the person for admission and found yourself freaking out again. Things got worse when Jessica came over with her other friends you knew all too well with your days of being used. "Well well, look who decided to show up. And I can't believe you chose Zim as your date Y/N. I thought your taste would be much better. I would have never guessed you would date ever." You clenched your fists.
(When Jessica insults your taste and assumes you are in a relationship while you are currently not interested in them:
)
"We're not dating. I'm just his friend ok? Just...please don't make fun of me." Jessica scoffed. "Fine whatever." Then she finally walked away. Zim stood there awkwardly. "I-I'm sorry for that. I know your not even interested in me so that probably made you very uncomfortable." Zim just looked at you confusedly. "Nevermind. I'm gonna go get some punch. You want some?" You asked. "Eh? Oh, No." he said simply. "Ok. I'll meet you back here." As you walked to the punch table, you finally met with Dib. "Oh hey, look who made it." You said jokingly grabbing punch. "Anything suspicious with the you know what?" He asked sipping his drink. "No, not at all actually. It's actually just really awkward and my anxiety is killing me." You responded sighing. "Well, everything seems normal. No offense to you of course. Are you sure that you are feeling alright? You keep shaking it off." You grip your punch cup tightly. "I'm fine! Fit as a fiddle." You replied putting a fake smile on. He awkwardly smiled back. "Why aren't you dancing? You love music so much, I thought of all people you would." Dib asked averting his eyes to you as you stared out in the crowd. "I would love to but I can't really dance...and I'm just really shy."
Your eyes eventually focused on the DJ leaving the table with his jacket in hand. You quickly handed Dib your punch and ran over to him. "Excuse-...excuse me sir?" You said tapping his shoulder lightly. He turned around. "What is it kid?" His disinterest clearly showing. "Why are you leaving? You're supposed to be the DJ!" He didn't respond and instead left. Everyone around you had started to whisper and point at the DJ table. You had to do something for once. And you weren't going to be a bystander.
You quietly stepped behind the table and searched the computer for songs. "Lets see..." You said as you kept looking. "Eureka!" You finally had found a song and pressed play. Eventually, you sat down and created a whole playlist for the night. "That should do it." And with that, you left the table and walked back to the punch table. "What did you do-? Oh." Dib's questions were immediately answered by one of your favorite songs playing on the computer. "Nice."
Dib had never really mentioned it or ever really realized about it until recently. Not only the fact his greatest enemy was taking his best friend Oh to the dance pissed him off a bit, but he might have been actually jealous. He honestly wouldn't even mind dating you. You were intelligent, kind, funny, and just...different. He had never met anyone like you before. But he knew you weren't interested in relationships and he accepted that. He just supposed he didn't actually mind dating you at all.
As you were casually making your way to get more punch you noticed Dib was walking towards Zim. You rolled your eyes and sipped your punch crossing your arms. "Not this again." You turned your attention to the dance floor until you heard noises behind you of people fighting. It wasn't until you turned around you saw a heck load of punch being thrown at Zim by Dib. But as he dodged, you happened to be there at the wrong time and all the punch soaked you. Everyone had stopped what they were doing and stared at the scene. Dib's eyes widened. He didn't mean to do that all. You blushed intensely and began to tear up out of embarrassment. You barged out avoiding all the kids laughing at you, but you soon regretted your choice as it was cold out and you were covered in punch. You shivered and started to cry for about a minute, until you heard someone clear their throat behind you.
You turned around to find Zim holding a coat out in his hands. It wasn't his, so you assumed he nabbed it from someone else. "I think it's time that we go home. I've got more important things to do." He said. You grabbed the coat and wrapped it around you. "T-thank you Zim." You say baffled. "Yeah sure whatever just move along." He said before walking with you home back home.
You managed to get home and Zim bid you farewell before you went inside. As you closed the door behind you, your first instinct was to change. So you did so changing into a t shirt and sweatpants to relax. Realizing your parents were out for the night by the note they left on the fridge, you grabbed your vinyl records and played them, lying down on the couch slowly drifting asleep.
