"Now what?"
"We just wait. They're supposed to start showing up a few minutes afterwards."
On a scale from good ideas to horrible ideas, messing with a strange machine you've found is always more towards the horrible side. Even with instructions, you shouldn't mess with it.
But Lewis and Logan were bored, and found the device in a box of junk in Lewis' basement.
—
The first person to show up looked to be an older version of Lewis, dressed in an old fashioned suit, with a hopeful little smile on his face.
They found him in the kitchen after the sound of ice clattering to the floor from the dispenser in the refrigerator door, and a startled little shriek. Current Lewis stopped just out of sight, then quietly told his friend, "Go talk to him. I think it'd freak him out even more if he saw me."
As soon as Logan walked into the room, the man's eyes lit up, only for them to fade again. "You aren't my Logan," he said softly. "You just look so much like him."
"Your Logan?"
He nodded, but soon looked mortified. "I mean... He was one of my close friends-"
"You looked really excited when you thought I was him. What happened to him?"
Past Lewis bit down on his lip and glanced off to the side. "You aren't going to turn me in, are you? Are you working for the police?"
"What? No, I'm still in school, I have a part-time job but it's not with the police. It's okay, whatever you're afraid of won't happen here." Logan started to lead the guy towards the living room to sit down, making a small gesture for current Lewis to follow them.
When he finally did speak, past Lewis' voice barely rose above a whisper. "I was going to run away with him, but my father turned him in. It's a crime for us to be together, but... I love him."
—
Current Lewis, unfortunately, didn't get to stick around to hear that. Instead, on his way around to still sneakily listen in, he was ambushed by a girl in dark florals, who grabbed him by the shoulder and covered his mouth.
"This is my house, but it's not at the same time. What the fuck is going on, and who are you?" She demanded, narrowing her amber eyes.
Her features seemed familiar, but he couldn't place it at all. She moved her hand so he could reply. "My name is- is Lewis and um, my friend Logan and I messed with this weird thing we found in the basement!"
"Jesus Christ, dude, how dumb are you? You've got to be shitting me. You don't fuck with weird things from the basement." She rolled her eyes and let go of him. "Call me Lia, and please for the love of all things holy, help me get home. I gotta music project due tomorrow."
—
While Logan was still talking with past Lewis, he caught sight of a girl walking past, seemingly hunting for something. He excused himself, then followed her to the sliding glass door leading into the backyard.
"Does Lewis know you're here?" He called out, freezing in place when the girl turned around.
He caught on quicker than Lewis did. He and the girl realized it at the same time and said, "You're me."
They introduced themselves and the girl (Lana), explained that she'd closed her eyes for a couple seconds too long and ended up in what she thought was her friend's room, but it wasn't the same.
"We found this little machine in the basement and decided to use it-"
Before he could finish his sentence, she smacked him in the back of the head.
—
Lewis felt so confused as he followed the angry girl around the house. That feeling only amplified when the pair found an older Logan in one of the bedrooms.
Even though this was his universe, he let Lia explain, too overwhelmed to do anything other than lead them back downstairs to the living room.
When he got there, Logan and Lana were messing with the machine again. Past Lewis curiously messed with a fidget toy, fully expecting something to happen each time he pressed the button on it.
As soon as Lia and past Logan caught sight of their friends, they left Lewis standing in the doorway.
Lia sat down beside Lana and shoved her shoulder. "The guy versions of us are total idiots."
"I'm not saying that I agree, but I can definitely see where you're coming from," Lana replied with a nod.
Past Logan stood in front of his Lewis, but didn't say a word until the man looked up. As soon as he realized who it was, Lewis shot to his feet and hugged Logan close. Logan obviously reciprocated the gesture, using one hand to fondly comb through the shorter man's hair.
"I'm so sorry for what happened- I didn't know Father would do something like that," Lewis blurted out, closing his eyes and breathing in deeply. "I missed you so, so much."
"Shh, we're together now, aren't we?" Logan responded.
The current versions of them looked on in some sort of shock. Current Lewis' face radiated heat, the blush creeping down his neck and to the tips of his ears. Logan seemed more chill about it, but still, there was something unreadable in his expression.
"Excuse me, but... what happens to Harry Brooks in your time?"
Hurt flashed over past Logan's face, voice a bit strained. "We met in France because of the war. He... didn't make it out."
Before any of them could offer a response of condolences or otherwise, Lia and Lana let out a cheer, the machine between them whirring and lighting up.
"We're going home!"
