IN 1995 , EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE TURNING OUT THE WAY IT SHOULD BE .
The cold, crisp air blew through the bustling streets of LA late at night, and the sound of cars driving by and endless chatter filled the air along with the loud booms and music that could be heard from the prestigious Orpheum theatre.
Bystanders who walked by would turn their heads in wonder.
On the inside of the Orpheum, in the middle of the noise, were four teenage boys.
Two girls sat in the front row, jamming and clapping along to whenever the boys did and laughing at the tricks they would do with their guitars, while the boys on stage played and sang as if their lives depended on it, grins on their faces.
"Live it like it's now or never, now or never!"
The ringing of the microphones remained in the air for a moment before the four boys on stage took a bow, and the crew and girls seated clapped and cheered.
The blonde and curly-haired brunette rose from their seats with giant smiles on their faces.
"Whoo! Yeah!", the brunette cheered, while the blonde grinned as she started walking towards the boy, clad in a singlet tee with a mop of brown hair, who placed his guitar away at the front of the stage.
The boys laughed at the brunette's enthusiasm, and they packed their instruments away.
"Thank you! We're Sunset Curve. Tell your friends!" One of the band members, a boy donning a black leather jacket, spoke into the mic, winking at the girl.
The small blonde, who finally made it up to the stage, laughed as she slung her arm around the boy, both of them grinning at each other.
"Too bad we wasted the tightest we ever played on a soundcheck," grinned another boy, this time in a leather vest.
The boy in the singlet tee brushed him off and grinned, "Wait until tonight, man! When this place is filled with record execs", He was practically bouncing with excitement.
The boy in the leather jacket made his way towards the drummer, the only blonde member among them, who donned a pink shirt.
The blonde girl also made her way towards him as well, tackling him with a hug, to which he chuckled and wrapped his arms tightly around the small girl in a yellow leather jacket and black crop top.
"Alex man, you were smoking!" exclaimed the leather jacket boy.
Alex shrugged bashfully, his arms still wrapped around the small girl.
"Oh no, I was just warming up. You guys were the ones that were on fire. "
"Could you just own your awesomeness for once?", the leather jacket boy groaned, making the blonde girl chuckle and detangle herself from Alex, giving him an enthusiastic nod, with the rest of the band doing the same.
"All right, I was killing it!" he grinned, fist-bumping his bandmates.
The blonde girl smiled and shook her head.
"Guys, shut up. All of you killed it. Seriously, you guys murdered that!"
The girl grinned and the leather jacket boy nudged her, "Yeah, well, we all know we would've sounded better with you up there with us, Liv," he said innocently with a smile.
The atmosphere dipped a little, the girl's lips pressed into a thin line compared to when she was smiling just a second ago, while the boy in the singlet tee slightly punched the leather jacket boy's arm.
"Reggie, dude, shut up." Reggie pouted, rubbing the spot where he had been punched, while the boy in a white singlet made his way to the blonde, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, whispering "sorry Olivia".
The girl shrugged it off. "No, no, Luke. I'm OK, I promise. Today is about you guys.", she said, lifting her head to face Luke with a sweet smile, making his heart flutter ever so slightly.
"Kay, well, I'm thinking we fuel up right before the show. I'm thinking street dogs", Luke said with a smile on his face.
Alex, Reggie, and Olivia whooped in agreement as the other band member hopped off the stage, making his way to the curly-haired brunette.
"Hey, Bobby, where you going?" Luke teased, finally detangling himself from Olivia as the rest of them hopped off stage as well.
"I'm good," Bobby said distractedly as he tried to play it cool in front of the curly-haired girl.
"I'm vegetarian, and could never hurt an animal," he cooed, making Olivia snort as she remembered that they all got burgers for lunch together and the time he killed his goldfish because he forgot to feed it.
The brunette ignored him as she smiled up at the band, "You guys are really good."
Luke grinned and quipped, "Thank you!"
"I've seen a lot of bands and been in a few of them myself. I was really feeling it," she complimented, and the boys glowed at her words.
"That's what we do this for. I'm Luke, by the way".
"Hi, I'm Reggie!"
'Alexβ'
"Bobby" Bobby cut them off to stand in front of the girl, and Olivia shook her head at the sight of the brunette's eyes darting to hers with a "yikes" expression on her face, making Olivia giggle silently.
"Nice meeting you guys. I'm Rose," she smiled.
Reggie then swiftly pulled out a CD case and a t-shirt before handing them to Rose. "Oh uh, here's our demo and t-shirt, size beautiful. " he flirted, causing Olivia to laugh and Alex to groan.
Rose held up the shirt and smiled gratefully at the band. "Thanks, I'll make sure not to wipe down the tables with this one," she joked.
"Oh, good call. Whenever they get wet, they kind of just...fall apart in your hands." Alex trailed off, slightly embarrassed.
Bobby turned to them, forcing a smile. "Don't you guys have to go get hotdogs?" he asked, slightly annoyed, clearly wanting to spend time with Rose.
Olivia rolled her eyes as she pushed Bobby aside. "Yeah, he had a hamburger for lunch," she said, causing Bobby to groan and the rest of the guys to snicker as they left the venue.
Bursting out of the double doors, bags in hands, the 4 teens made their way out of the alleyway and to the hotdog place, the chatter, and smell of Sunset Boulevard hitting them in the face as Olivia smiled.
She wouldn't trade her life for anything in the world.
Luke started talking about how excited he was about tonight, how ecstatic he was about getting to play at the Orpheum, and how he wanted the music to connect to people as Olivia stuffed her hands in her jacket pockets since the air started getting chilly, Reggie immediately noticed and tucked the girl under his arm to try and provide a bit more warmth, Olivia smiled at him.
"Our music is like an energy, it connects us with people, they can feel us when we play, and I want that connection with everybody," announced Luke, with an impish grin on his face, as he turned to look at his friends, not missing the way Olivia was tucked cozily under Reggie's arm.
"Well, we're going to need more t-shirts," quipped Reggie with a smile on his face, causing the rest of them to chuckle as they walked.
"Oh you don't need to worry about that Reg, I have boxes of them in my room because Alex wouldn't stop playing with the t-shirt printing machine," said Olivia as she gave her brother a playful glare.
"Hey! There's just something about seeing it in printing that's satisfying, okay," remarked Alex as the teens arrived at the back of the Prius car to order their hotdogs.
Walking into a nearby eatery, the teens flopped onto the couch, squashed between Alex and Luke with a hotdog in hand.
"You guys, this is awesome. We're playing at the Orpheum ! I can't even count how many people have played there and become legends," Luke said with a dreamy look on his face, the rest of the boys daydreaming about becoming rock stars too, while Olivia smiled at them softly.
Luke noticed the girl's slightly sad smile and gave her a nudge, "You know, you could always join us last minute. We could hook you up with a keyboard and you would just sing backing vocals. Nothing too out there, "he said gently to the girl.
Olivia almost said yes for a split second.
"Guys, you know, I would love to, but I just can't." The boys looked at her with sad eyes but nodded nonetheless, knowing it was going to take a lot to get her back on stage and perform again, but they weren't going to give up till she did.
Luke's knee brushed against Olivia's reassuringly, causing the girl to smile at him while he grinned up at the rest of them.
"Eat up, boys, because, after tonight, everything changes." They cheered, slapped their hotdogs against each other, and took a bite.
Needless to say, that night did change everything for the 4 teens. Not just in the way they saw coming.
