change my priorities the taste of your lips is my idea of luxury
after aubrey wen to her locker room to get her stuff, we decided to go back to her dorm. we were walking on campus, more and more people appearing, either walking to their late classes or back to their dorms. me and aubrey were in a comfortable silence, none of us saying a word but i don't think there was anything to say.
we stood in front of the dorm building as aubrey opened the door for me, letting me in first and then her following behind me. the soft hum of the lights in the hallway greeted us as the door clicked shut behind her. the scent of laundry detergent and the faint, lingering aroma of someone's burnt popcorn filled the air. aubrey walked ahead, her sneakers squeaking slightly against the polished floor.
"here," she said softly, motioning towards the elevator. we stepped inside, and as the doors slid shut, I glanced at her reflection in the mirrored wall. she looked unintentionally beautiful. her hair naturally now, instead of the bun she had in her hair a few hours ago. her jawline, and those brown eyes that i can lose myself in. she must've noticed me admiring her, because she looked my way. i bowed my head down, looking at the elevator floor, trying to hide the blush that has crept it's way into my face. she fully turned towards me, raising her hand and holding my face with it. and before she could say something, the elevator stopped, the door opened and it revealed paige and azzi hand in hand. they looked at us mouth agape. aubrey's hand dropped from my face, the warmth lingering on my face.
"fuck you. now i owe ice money." she glanced between the two of us, throwing her head back.
i couldn't help but laugh. the elevator doors started closing, but before it could, me and aubrey got out and azzi and paige walked in.
"don't have too much fun." paige winked at us rapidly or at least something like that.
the doors slid shut before either of us could say another word. aubrey turned back to me, with her cheeky smile. "well, that wasn't awkward at all."
I laughed nervously, still feeling the heat in my face. "not at all. just perfectly timed."
she tilted her head slightly, studying me again with those eyes that always seemed to see straight through me. "you're blushing," she said, her voice teasing but soft.
I groaned, covering my face with my hands. "thanks for pointing that out."
she stopped in front of me, resting her hand on my arm before sliding them up to my wrists, moving it away from my face. "don't hide from me."
her touch was gentle, and I let her pull my hands away, though I could still feel the heat rushing to my cheeks. aubrey's fingers lingered on my wrists as she looked down at me, her expression soft. she moved a strand of hair out of my face and tucked it behind my ear. "you're pretty when you're blushing."
"can i kiss you?" she asked, i nodded, putting my hands on her shoulder and getting on my tippy toes, as she slowly moved her hand down to my hips. she gently pulled me more into herself, attaching her lips on mine. her lips were soft and warm, and as she kissed me, everything around us seemed to disappear. there was just the feeling of her lips against mine, gentle at first, as if we were both testing the waters, then deepening as she pulled me closer.
I could feel her heartbeat through the contact, steady but rapid, like mine. her hands on my hips guided me in, drawing me further into the kiss, until there was no space left between us. every movement was slow, deliberate, like she was savoring the moment just as much as I was. her fingers brushed along my waist, and I couldn't help but melt into her touch, the heat between us undeniable.
I was lost in her, in the softness of her lips, the warmth of her breath mingling with mine. she tilted her head slightly, her lips moving with mine, and I followed her lead, too caught up in the kiss to think about anything else. the moment felt infinite, like time was standing still just for us.
when we finally pulled apart, it was only because we had to. I opened my eyes to find her staring at me, her lips still slightly parted, her chest rising and falling with each breath.
she took my hand in hers, as we continued walking to her dorm she squeezed my hand gently as we walked down the hallway, our steps quiet. I couldn't stop glancing at her, her fingers tightened around mine, her thumb tracing small circles on the back of my hand, and I could feel the tension between us.
when we reached the door to her dorm room, she paused, her hand still holding mine. She turned to face me, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "you okay?" she asked, her voice low, almost hesitant.
I nodded, my heart still racing in my chest. "yeah. more than okay."
her smile grew, and she gently pulled me inside, the door clicking softly behind us. the room was dimly lit, the warm glow from a string of fairy lights illuminating the corners. I stood there for a moment, not sure what to do next, but when she stepped closer, the uncertainty melted away. she turned me towards her, she leaned in, her lips brushing mine once moreโthis time, more urgent, more hungry, as if we both needed to be reminded of the feeling we just shared. I kissed her back with the same intensity, hands reaching up to pull her closer, fingers threading through her hair.
the kiss deepened, and I lost myself again in the warmth of her touch, the heat of her body pressing against mine, her lips moving against mine in a rhythm that was all our own. the world outside her dorm room faded, and it was just the two of usโlost in each other, completely wrapped up in the moment.
then, my phone rang.
i sighed, pulling away from aubrey. i pulled my phone out from my pockets, reading tara's name on the screen. i picked up, and i'm immediately met with my best friends cheerful voice.
"hi girl, jamie is hosting another party. it's been a while since we've went out. are you in?"
"i don't know...."
"come on, it will be fun!"
i looked at aubrey, who's head rested against the wall behind her. she looked at me and shrugged.
"okay. when is it?"
"yesss!! it's at 7pm."
"okay i'll be there."
"great! and you know, aubrey might be there too."
i looked up at the girl in front of me, holding in her laugh, but failing.
"oh? was that her? that sounded like aubrey yo-"
"okay see you. bye"
I hung up the phone, my fingers still hovering over the screen. I looked at aubrey, who was smiling big. her eyes sparkled with amusement, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her. "you couldn't resist, could you?" I asked.
"oh, I couldn't help it." she stepped closer, her eyes gleaming.
I rolled my eyes, but a smile tugged at my lips. "you're ridiculous."
she reached for my hand, pulling me into her, so that my back was in front of her. I froze, my heart skipping a beat.
"you have to admit that you were into me before all of this." aubrey's grin widened, our reflection looking back at us in the full body sized mirror in front of us. "you know... before all of this." she gestured between us, her fingers brushing over my arm.
"i didn't even know i liked women before i met you." i admitetd and I glanced away, feeling that familiar blush creeping up my neck. aubrey's grip on my hand tightened slightly, her thumb running over my knuckles in a slow, deliberate motion as she took a step closer. "really?" she murmured, her voice soft but filled with curiosity.
I nodded, still unable to look her in the eye, my heart pounding in my chest. "yeah... I mean, I always thought about it, you know, but I never... well, felt it, not like this. not like I feel with you."
aubrey's breath hitched behind me, and I could hear the smile in her voice. "I'm flattered." she paused for a second, her fingers now gently tracing over my arm, sending a warm rush through me. I bit my lip, trying to calm the nerves building up inside me. the reflection of us standing together, so close, made my pulse race all over again. her eyes were soft now, no longer teasing but instead filled with something warmer, more genuine.
she leaned in a fraction closer, her lips brushing against the back of my ear, and I felt a wave of electricity shoot through me at the simple contact. "I'm really glad I could be the one to make you realize that,"
I couldn't stop the smile that spread across my face. "yeah, why is that?" I breathed, my voice barely a whisper.
aubrey nodded, her hand now resting lightly on my waist, her touch grounding me in the moment. "yeah. because, now, I get to keep you." she pressed her lips to the side of my neck, just a soft brush of contact, and I couldn't help but close my eyes at the feeling.
............
I was back at my dorm with tara beside me, and she was bombarding me with questions, her curiosity impossible to contain.
"so, are you guys together or...?" she asked, her tone a little teasing but also genuinely interested.
the words felt strange to say out loud, but they were true. things with Aubrey were still so new, and while there was definitely something between us, we hadn't really labeled it yet.
tara raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "hmm, okay. so... it's just a 'thing' for now?"
I shrugged, not entirely sure how to explain it. "I guess so. I mean, it's... good. really good. but we're both kind of figuring it out."
tara grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "well, whatever it is, I'm here for it. just don't leave me hanging on the details, alright?"
I rolled my eyes but couldn't suppress a smile. "I'll keep you updated, I promise."
I sighed, leaning against the edge of my desk as I grabbed my jacket. "I don't know. she didn't ask me to be her girlfriend, and neither did I." the words felt strange to say out loud, but they were true. things with aubrey were still so new, and while there was definitely something between us, we haven't labeled it yet.
with that, the rest of our getting ready went by quickly. tara made sure I was fully dressed and looked halfway decent before grabbing her own jacket and leading the way out of our dorm room.
the night air was cool as we stepped outside, and the walk to jamie's place wasn't far. I didn't mind the short stroll; it gave us time to chat, and honestly, I needed the time to clear my head.
"so," tara started, her voice a little more serious now as we walked side by side, "are you gonna tell aubrey about... you know, the conversation we had?"
I paused for a moment, thinking. "I don't think so."
we rounded the corner, the music thumping in the distance, and the sounds of people already laughing and chatting spilling out from the open windows. I felt the excitement building in my chestโthis would be a good time to catch up with jamie.
jamie had become a really good friend over the past few months, though we hadn't talked as much recently. we had drifted a bit, but this party was a perfect excuse to reconnect.
