AUTHOR'S POV
---
When Y/N was 8 years old and her best friend Sehun was 11, the breakdown virus tore through the world, reducing cities to ruins and turning loved ones into monsters. Both had been raised on the same military base for as long as they could remember, their early childhood shaped by the strict discipline and structure of military life.
Their parents, high-ranking officers, couldn't live with them due to the demands of their duties, but Y/N still managed to maintain a strong bond with hers, treasuring the rare moments they spent together. In contrast, Sehun, who had no memory of his parents, was seen as an orphan on the base due to their unexplained absence.
At 15, Y/N started taking on more responsibilities at the military base. She joined scavenging teams, helped with medical care, and learned self-defense.
While carrying out her duties, she often overheard bits of conversation from soldiers and officers-talk of a research facility, murmurs about the early days of the outbreak, and mentions of secret projects. These scattered fragments of information stuck with her, though she didn't quite understand their meaning at the time.
One day, while organizing files for an officer, Y/N stumbled upon an old report with unfamiliar names tied to a confidential operation. One name stood out-a scientist who had died early in the outbreak. The more Y/N looked into it, the more she felt a strange connection between the woman, her parents, and Sehun.
Unable to fully comprehend the significance, she kept her suspicions to herself, unsure of what it all meant or how it might affect her relationships with Sehun and her parents.
In her late 16s, Y/N's life took a sharp turn. During a supply run near a small town, she encountered Jiwoo-a girl running for her life from the infected. Y/N risked everything to save her and brought her back to the base. Jiwoo quickly adapted to life there, earning the respect of the soldiers and officers with her resilience and resourcefulness.
Y/N and Jiwoo quickly developed a strong bond, built on mutual respect and shared experiences in the chaos. They became each other's anchors, trusting one another as they navigated the dangers around them.
Sehun and Jiwoo, too, grew closer over the next year. Their relationship deepened as they supported each other through the challenges, transitioning from friendship to something more as they found solace in each other's presence.
The base, despite its size and resources, had faced several attacks over the years, including smaller skirmishes with rival groups attempting to steal supplies or seize control.
One such group had already targeted them before but failed due to the base's strong defenses. However, during their latest assault, the rival group made a crucial mistake. Unbeknownst to them, a massive zombie horde had been passing through the surrounding areas. Their reckless attack caused enough noise and disturbance to draw the horde toward the base.
The clash between the rival group and the horde was disastrous. Despite the base's skilled personnel and strong defenses, the overwhelming numbers of the infected were too much to handle.
In the chaos, Y/N, Sehun, Jiwoo, and a few trusted friends managed to escape. Grabbing whatever they could, they fled through an emergency route just as the base was overrun. With no time to mourn or recover, they were pushed into the wilderness, leaving behind the only home they had ever known.
Over the next four years, Y/N and her group wandered the devastated world, helping struggling survivors and assisting camp leaders in fortifying territories. While their efforts earned them allies and the trust of many, they also attracted enemies-rival groups who saw them as threats or sought to exploit their growing reputation.
During these years, Sehun stumbled upon hints of Y/N's secret mission. He learned she was quietly searching for a group or individuals who, according to her, might possess crucial knowledge about the virus, possibly linked to its origins or development. This discovery added a layer of curiosity and unease to their journey, as Sehun began to wonder about the risks involved in her quest.
Unbeknownst to Sehun, Y/N had uncovered a painful truth at the age of 16. Her parents, once respected high-ranking military officers, were drawn into a government project that accidentally played a part in the virus's creation. Though they had no choice in their involvement, their connection to the tragedy ultimately cost them their lives, leaving Y/N searching for answers.
Sehun's mother, a talented scientist, was also part of the project but lost her life during the early stages of the virus. To Y/N's shock, she discovered that Sehun was her half-brother-her father's son from a previous relationship. Fearing how this revelation might affect their bond, Y/N chose to keep it a secret, carrying the weight of her family's past while pursuing her mission.
