9:45 am
i sat in a random coffee shop, nervously waiting for my meeting with viv, my boss. i didn't know why she'd scheduled it, which made me uneasy. had i messed up an article? missed a deadline? my mind was spiraling with worst-case scenarios as i clicked on the link she'd sent me.
viv's face appeared on the screen, along with someone else who had their camera off.
"hi, good morning, viv," i greeted her, turning on my camera.
"morning, isla! where are you? oh, right-you're in new york. how's it going?" she asked, smiling warmly.
"i'm doing great! i went to a concert last night with my friends," i replied, trying to sound casual even though my heart was racing.
"i saw your stories! that role model guy has a great voice," she said, chuckling.
"oh, for sure. you'd love him," i said, before finally asking what had been on my mind since the meeting was scheduled. "so... what's this meeting about?"
viv hesitated for a moment, and i tensed.
"well, there's someone here who wanted to talk to you," she said cryptically. "i wasn't sure how to tell you."
my stomach dropped. "wait... am i being fired? if you're going to fire me, just do it quickly-i'll need time to cry afterward," i said, half-joking but mostly terrified.
"isla, please," viv said, giving me a look. "you're one of our best writers. why on earth would i fire you?"
"oh." i exhaled, feeling slightly ridiculous. "okay, then... who's here?"
"i'm elliot," a voice said, and suddenly, the other person turned on their camera.
i froze.
sitting in front of me, on my screen, was elliot hayes. from vogue. i recognized him immediately-the crisp suit, the neatly styled dark hair, and that effortless confidence he always seemed to radiate.
"hi, isla," he said, smiling warmly. "i've heard a lot about you. i've been reading your work, too, and let me just say-your article on social media and the future of style? brilliant. you write with such clarity and depth. it's rare to see that."
for a moment, i just stared at him. was this actually happening?
"wow, um, thank you," i managed to say, my voice quieter than usual. "that article was really special to me. i'm glad you liked it."
"liked it?" he laughed lightly. "i loved it. and that's why i'm here. i have a proposition for you."
i blinked. "a... proposition?"
viv leaned back, smiling as though she already knew what was coming.
"yes," elliot said. "we're always on the lookout for fresh voices at vogue, and after reading your work and hearing viv talk about you, i knew i had to reach out. i want to offer you a job on our editorial team."
my breath caught in my throat.
"wait. you want... me? to work at vogue?" i asked, struggling to believe the words coming out of his mouth.
"yes," elliot said, his tone firm and sincere. "you have a unique voice, isla. you understand the way fashion intersects with culture, media, and technology. we need someone like you. you'd be writing for our digital platform, with the chance to pitch bigger projects and work on high-profile features. it's a lot, but i think you're more than ready."
i couldn't speak. my mind was racing, trying to process what was happening. vogue. the place i'd dreamed of working for since i first fell in love with fashion journalism.
"wow," i finally said, my voice shaky. "i... i don't know what to say."
"say yes," viv teased, grinning.
i laughed, the tension breaking as excitement bubbled up inside me. "yes. yes, absolutely!"
elliot smiled. "welcome to vogue, isla."
"thank you. i mean it-thank you," i said, feeling a lump in my throat.
"we'll send over the official details soon," elliot added. "but for now, enjoy the moment. you've earned it."
as the call ended, i sat back in my chair, staring at my laptop screen in disbelief. around me, the coffee shop buzzed with life-people ordering lattes, typing on their laptops, chatting with friends-but it all felt distant.
everything had just changed.
i took a deep breath, a smile spreading across my face. for the first time in a long time, i felt like i was exactly where i was meant to be.
i stepped out of the coffee shop, still in a daze, as the chilly new york air hit me. my mind was racing, and my heart felt like it was about to burst out of my chest. i'd just been offered a job at vogue. vogue. i hugged my coat tighter around me and started walking toward the hotel where my friends were staying, unable to wipe the giddy smile off my face.
i needed to tell someone. my fingers hovered over my phone, and before i knew it, i was dialing my mom. she picked up after the second ring.
"hey, sweetie! how's new york?" she asked, her familiar, warm voice instantly making me feel grounded.
"mom," i said, my voice shaky with excitement, "something just happened, and i need to tell you."
"what is it?" she asked, immediately sounding concerned. "are you okay?"
"i'm more than okay," i said, my breath catching as the words started tumbling out. "i just got offered a job at vogue."
there was a brief silence on the other end of the line, and then-
"what?" she practically yelled. "vogue? like the vogue?"
"yes, mom! vogue vogue. elliot hayes was on a call with viv, and he said he's been reading my articles and wants me on their editorial team!"
"oh my god, isla!" she exclaimed, and i could hear the emotion in her voice. "i'm so proud of you, sweetheart! you've worked so hard for this."
"i know," i said, tears welling up in my eyes as i walked down the busy new york street. "i still can't believe it's real."
"well, believe it, because you've earned this. they'd be crazy not to want you," she said, her voice filled with pride. "your dad's going to be so excited when i tell him. you're going to be writing for vogue! do you know how big this is?"
"yeah, it's huge," i said, laughing through the tears. "it's literally my dream job, mom."
"and it's just the beginning," she said softly. "you've always had something special, isla. i knew you were going to do incredible things."
her words hit me straight in the heart, and i wiped away a tear as i stopped at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change.
"thanks, mom. i love you," i said quietly.
"i love you too, sweetie," she said. "now, when do you start? what are the details?"
"i don't know everything yet," i admitted, crossing the street. "elliot said they'll send me the official offer soon, but it sounds like i'll be splitting my time between new york and l.a. for now."
"well, you know we'll visit you wherever you are," she said. "this calls for a celebration! when you get back, we're going out for a fancy dinner."
"deal," i said, smiling.
we talked a bit longer before hanging up, and as i slipped my phone back into my bag, i felt lighter than i had in weeks. for the first time, all those late nights, all the self-doubt, and all the hard work felt worth it.
i reached the hotel and paused outside for a moment, taking a deep breath before heading in. my heart was racing, and i could already imagine the looks on my friends' faces when i told them the news.
without wasting time, i rushed through the lobby and into the elevator, feeling the adrenaline surge through me. should i blurt it out the second i walked in? or draw it out and make it more dramatic? subtlety wasn't exactly my strong suit, after all.
when the elevator dinged and the doors slid open on our floor, i stepped out, my pulse quickening. as i reached into my bag for the key to our room, i realized my fingers were trembling just slightly.
i opened the door and walked inside. there they all were-my favorite people in the world. even tucker was there.
cora was sitting on the couch, scrolling through her phone. felix was scribbling something in her notebook, probably working on a song. drew was half-asleep, lazily nodding at whatever ky was saying, and tucker was in the kitchen making himself a coffee. just seeing them made me feel a little less jittery, but i knew that in about thirty seconds, everything was about to change.
i had a plan now. thankfully, i'd taken drama class in high school. time to put those skills to use.
"i'm back," i said, using a somber tone, my face carefully neutral.
felix looked up immediately, frowning. "you okay?" she asked, her voice full of concern.
"yeah," i said with a sigh, trying to keep my expression serious. "i have some not-so-great news."
they all froze.
"what happened?" ky asked, leaning forward, his brow furrowed.
i took a deep breath. "i got fired." my voice was flat, matter-of-fact.
silence. complete silence. you could've heard a pin drop.
"what?" drew practically shouted, suddenly wide awake.
"NO."
"THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE."
"YOU'RE THE BEST WRITER THERE!"
"GIVE ME YOUR PHONE-I'M CALLING YOUR BOSS."
they were all talking at once, their voices overlapping, their eyes wide with shock.
"guys!" i said, raising my hands to calm them down, fighting to keep a straight face. "let me explain."
they fell silent, their anxious faces waiting for me to speak.
"i got fired," i repeated, pausing for dramatic effect, "because they offered me a job at vogue."
silence. again. but this time, it didn't last long.
"vogue?" tucker was the first to react, his eyes lighting up as he rushed over to hug me. "ISLA, OH MY GOD! CONGRATULATIONS!"
i laughed, feeling my chest tighten with emotion as he wrapped his arms around me. when i glanced over at cora, i saw she was already staring at me, her expression unreadable, but her eyes held that familiar glint-the one that meant we'll talk later.
before i could process anything else, the rest of them were on their feet, swarming me with hugs and shouts.
"ISLA, I SWEAR I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"
"I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK!"
"THIS IS LITERALLY YOUR DREAM!"
"I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!"
their excitement, their disbelief, and their joy for me hit me all at once. tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but this time, they weren't from fear or anxiety-they were from pure, overwhelming happiness.
i had dreamed of this moment for so long, and now that it was finally here, it felt even better than i imagined. because i wasn't celebrating alone. i was celebrating with the people who had been there for me through everything-the late nights, the setbacks, the endless cups of coffee and pages of drafts that never saw the light of day. they had seen it all, and now they were here to share this victory with me.
"thank you, guys," i whispered, my voice cracking just a little.
"we're so proud of you," felix said, pulling me into another hug.
"you've earned this," ky added, grinning.
i looked around at all of them, my heart so full it felt like it might burst.
this was it. this was what it felt like to reach the dream-and to know, deep down, that it was only the beginning.
