❝ SICK DAY ❞

Night time had begun, the stars twinkled in the blanket of darkness that had been flung over the sky. The silver moon shone down onto the colourful apartment block that sat peacefully on the Earth below.

Gummy was busy juggling some eggs to entertain himself in his living room, while Kala and (Y/n) watched in interest from the sofa. Harry was also busy, but by doing some calculations on his easel.

He scribbled one last red cross against the paper flung over the wooden structure before turning to Gummy.

"So, tomorrow's the day of that big dance competition you've been looking forward to, Gummy!" He said happily.

"Are you nervous?" (Y/n) asked Gummy, leaning back against the pillows thrown onto the sofa.

Gummy looked towards her with those half-lidded eyes, his smile becoming more of a smirk.

"Nervous? Me?" He replied, as if it was obvious that he wouldn't be.

As if answering the question made him lose all focus on his juggling, the eggs fell from the air, smashing onto Gummy's head and cracking as they did so. The top of his head became covered with slimy egg yolks and broken shell fragments.

(Y/n) giggled. "I'll take that as a yes..."

Gummy sighed, frowning. "Well... maybe a smidgen... that could be why I'm feeling a bit, off?"

(Y/n) felt sadness flowing into her heart. She couldn't stand seeing Gummy upset, as it wasn't something she saw often.

"But nothing a good night's sleep won't cure..." Gummy began slowly and sadly wandering towards the opening in the wall that lead his bedroom. "Goodnight!" He waved to his friends without turning around as he sleepily entered into his bedroom.

"Goodnight Gummy! See you in the morning!" Harry, Kala and (Y/n) replied in unison.

(Y/n) sighed, thinking about Gummy being upset. Whenever this negative emotion took over Gummy's feelings, it would usually be something he really cared about, something really important to him.

(Y/n) wished there was something she could do to help and support him.

The image of his smirk with those half-lidded eyes entered her thoughts, causing her to sigh happily, snatching and cuddling a pillow from behind her.

Kala noticed her sister beside her, lost in her thoughts, as well as not realising she was blushing. Kala chuckled, before heading off towards her apartment with Harry.

~

The bright white sun slowly rose from below the distant horizon, showering bright blue across the sky. A new day had begun.

Gummy slowly opened his eyes, realising that his deep, sound sleep would have to come to an end.

He sighed, pushing his bright pink bed cover off of his exhausted body and sitting up on the mattress.

"Still feeling a little under the weather..." he sighed to himself.

"But I'm sure I'll pop out of it any minute now..." He prepared to place his feet onto the ground to exit his room and start the new day.

"Any minute now..."

However, he caught a glimpse of his exhausted reflection in a small mirror that was propped up against his alarm clock on his side table...

~

Kala, Harry and (Y/n) managed to enter Gummy's apartment, and decided to get themselves some breakfast since Gummy wasn't anywhere to be found.

While enjoying their early morning meal of cornflakes, Harry decided to spark a conversation.

"I wonder how Gummy's doing this morning..."

(Y/n) sighed, remembering how Gummy felt last night, also thinking about how he might be feeling today, and where he might be...

Suddenly, a panicking scream echoed through the apartment, alerting to Gummy's friends that he was in his bedroom.

"Next question..." Kala groaned, sliding from her stool heading towards the direction of Gummy's bedroom.

Harry and (Y/n) followed close behind, concerned looks on their faces.

~

Meanwhile in Gummy's bedroom, Gummy was gripping onto the bright green, bear-shaped mirror that had been propped onto his side table. His eyes were squeezed shut in pure panic and fear.

"I'm just imagining it... I'm just imagining it..." he repeated to reassure himself.

He slowly opened one of his eyes to witness the situation that the small pane of glass reflected back at him.

"I'm not just imagining it..." he admitted, before scrunching his eyes back to being closed, releasing another almighty scream.

"HARRY!! KALA!! (Y/N)!! COME QUICK!! COME QUICKER THAN QUICK!!"

His friends heard this echo through the kitchen, and began running towards his room in panic and concern.

"I wonder what he's overreacting to now..." Kala groaned to her sister as they slid through the doorway.

"I guess we're about to find out..." Harry added, overhearing her.

The three friends entered Gummy's bedroom, where Gummy was lazily hanging his legs over the side of the mattress, head in his hands.

He heard his friends enter, lifting his head in response and shame.

Kala and Harry shrieked in fear mixed with surprise, as they saw what Gummy had been 'overreacting' to. (Y/n) threw her hands up to cover the gasp that escaped her mouth.

Gummy had caught chickenpox.

~

"Well, thanks for coming over doc..." Harry sighed, discussing Gummy's condition with the doctor that had arrived to check on him a few minutes ago.

"Gummy phoning me seventeen times didn't exactly leave me much choice..." the doctor replied.

(Y/n) almost found it entertaining how much Gummy panicked when the slightest threat to his health entered his life, yet at the same time really worried about him.

"I'll check on him again later..." the doctor said, sounding like he was just done with life as he left the apartment.

Harry turned his attention to the sisters stood by his side.

"OK, on the plus side, Gummy's just got chickenpox, and there's no risk of us catching them, since we've all already had them." Harry tried to reassure Kala and (Y/n)

However, Kala broke the positive atmosphere. "On the not so plus side, I'm really not looking forward to this... because despite being a great pal..."

"And a great guy..." (Y/n) added, earning a cheeky smirk from her sister, making her blush after realising what she'd blurted out.

"The last time he got sick, he was the world's all time absolute worst patient!" Kala continued, her thoughts filling with memories.

"I just hope this time the doctor doesn't give him..." Harry began, shivering at the remains of the sentence.

"The bell!!" The three friends quivered at the thought as the sound of ringing flew through the air from Gummy's bedroom towards the front door.

~

Harry, Kala and (Y/n) re-entered Gummy's bedroom, to see Gummy himself cuddled up underneath his bedtime blanket. He was snuggled comfortably into his mattress, an ice pack balanced on his head and a thermometer poking out from the corner of his mouth. He held the bell gently with his fingertips over the edge of the bed, with pills and medicine bottles strewn all across the blanket.

"So, what did the doctor say?" Gummy asked, a worried tone filling his voice.

"He said you've got chickenpox..." Harry stated.

"I know I've got chickenpox!" Gummy replied sternly.

"Then that shows what a good doctor he is." (Y/n) added, trying to reassure Gummy.

"I told him I had chickenpox!" Gummy replied.

"Then at least he's a good listener..." Harry sighed.

"Yikes! This is worse than I thought!" Gummy said in panic. "And trust me what I thought was already pretty bad..." he continued.

Kala sighed out of pure frustration. "Stop overreacting Gummy! The doctor said you'd be fine!"

(Y/n) folded her arms, rolling her (e/c) eyes at her sister for not tolerating Gummy's panic with his illness.

"As long as your take your medicine and rest." Harry stated.

"Easy for him to say! He's not the one with his forehead in the Sahara and his feet in the Antarctic!" Gummy complained, pointing up to his head and down to his feet. "I'm freezing and burning all at the same time!"

He turned to his side table, picking up his stethoscope and pushing it against his chest. His expression became more panicked as he couldn't hear any heartbeat sounds pumping up through the wires.

"Oh my gosh! I've got no heartbeat! I'm no expert but I'm willing to bet that no heartbeat can't be good!" Gummy grew more frustrated.

(Y/n) tried not to laugh at Gummy's weirdly cute frustration, helping him out of his current problem instead.

"Have you tried putting the earpieces in your ears, Gummy?" She asked, her sister rolling her eyes and groaning beside her.

"Oh... r-right..." Gummy replied, sounding a little embarrassed as he shifted the earpieces from the side of his head up to his ears. The sound of his heartbeat began to pump through his ears.

He sighed in relief, removing the stethoscope. "I'm cured! At least of the no heartbeat problem... though trust me, there are still so many other things that could go wrong!" Gummy's voice began to fill with more frustration and anxiety.

Harry sighed. "Look, the doctor said you should get some rest, so we'll see you later..." He began to lead Kala out of the bedroom, with (Y/n) becoming reluctant to following them.

However, before they could exit the room, Gummy began to panic about these many other things that could go wrong, stopping them in their tracks.

"My feet feel hot!" He suddenly stated.

Harry sighed, turning back around to face his anxious friend. "They're not hot!" He tried to reassure him.

"You think they're too cold!?" Gummy asked in pure panic.

Harry groaned in frustration. "They're not too cold either, Gummy!"

Gummy lifted the blanket, peaking down towards his feet. He suddenly gasped, looking up towards Harry.

"Then maybe their too inbetween!! OMG!!' Gummy shouted, anxiously clutching the edge of the blanket.

(Y/n) sighed and Kala groaned beside her.

"I didn't think it was possible for him to top his last world's most annoying patient performance..."

Gummy continued to ramble in a string of what felt like never ending worries.

"What about my eyes! Do they look cloudy to you!? What about my sinuses? You don't wanna know about my sinuses!"

Kala continued to roll her eyes and groan in frustration, earning a nudge in the side by her sister. (Y/n) wanted her friends to support Gummy while he was stressed and anxious about his health.

"Maybe I should try acupuncture. No, forget that, I'm terrified of needles. Does it feel kinda hot in here to you? Do we have a fan? No, make that a blanket. No, on a third thought, DEFINITELY a fan, but better bring a blanket along too just in case..."

Gummy's panics and anxieties about his health status seemed to be endless.

(Y/n) sighed and held her forehead in her hands.

This was going to be a very long day...

~

Throughout many hours, Harry and Kala had been rushing through the remainders of Gummy's apartment, even rushing downstairs to their own apartments, to provide Gummy with everything he needed.

(Y/n) decided to stay with him, not just because she didn't want to be running back and forth up and down the stairs, but because she wanted to make sure everything was OK with Gummy.

She'd made sure the fan was blowing in the right direction, that the ice pack on his head was cold enough, that he was taking the right medicine at the right time...

He also seemed to relax whenever she did these things for him, and provided him with whatever Kala and Harry rushed into the room with.

(Y/n) thought that, since they were alone for most of the day, that this would be the perfect opportunity to tell him how she felt...

She eventually decided not to, since he already had enough things to think about and process right now.

Gummy then rang his little bell for what seemed like the millionth time.

"A little help around here please! I'M HANGING BY A THREAD!" He shouted, turning his head towards the direction of the building's staircase.

Harry slowly managed to flop along the stairs in absolute exhaustion, and wondering what else Gummy could possibly need.

He panted and sweated, slowly making his way through the bedroom door.

"Up, down... up, down... I tell you, those stairs are starting to feel like Mount Everest to me!"

(Y/n) sighed, but couldn't hold back a smile.

~

After another couple hours of rushing back and forth across the apartment, up and down the staircase, in and out of Gummy's bedroom, Kala and Harry had just about had enough.

They slumped onto the couch, panting like dogs on a hot summer's day, and sweating as if they'd just come out of the shower.

Kala groaned. "Thankfully, Gummy doesn't get sick too often..."

"Since... I don't think... either of us... could... survive it!" Harry replied, slowly as he took a well needed breath between almost every word.

Much to their annoyance, Gummy let out another almighty scream to alert them that he needed something else - because somehow there was something else he still didn't have.

The two friends were so burnt out that they couldn't even walk towards the door. Their sweaty, panting bodies crawled across the floor into the entrance.

"WHAAATT!!!??" they both screamed in unison as they flopped into the bedroom, completely done with this situation.

Gummy smiled, sitting up in his bed. "I think I'm starting to feel better!"

(Y/n) turned around from her position facing the window as she came off of a phone call with the doctor. He said he would be arriving soon to check on Gummy.

After only a few minutes, the sound of knocking ran through the apartment. (Y/n) dashed to the front door to let the doctor enter.

He entered Gummy's room, preparing his stethoscope. He pressed it against Gummy's chest, a shocked expression appearing across his face as he heard no heartbeat pass through the wires.

He gasped. "This patient has no heartbeat!" He cried in disbelief.

Gummy sighed and chuckled. "The earpieces go in your ears..."

(Y/n) couldn't help but laugh from across the other side of Gummy's bed. It was also a bit concerning how a doctor could make such a simple and silly mistake.

"Oh..." the doctor pushed the earpieces into his ears, sighing in relief to hear the sound of a pumping heart.

He examined Gummy's physical condition, then smiled. "He's miraculously completely recovered!" He cried, Gummy's smile growing wider at the delivery of such good news.

He then turned his attention to Kala and Harry, who had collapsed in a puddle of sweat on the floor by the doorway.

"But as for you two..." the doctor began.

Gummy turned to his clock on his side table, another beaming smile crossing his face.

"I still might have just enough time to make it to that big dance competition!"

The doctor turned back to Gummy, his smile becoming a frown.

"Sorry, but I'm afraid your two friends are suffering from an advanced case of exhausted-stressed-out-itis, and they're going to need your full and undivided attention caring for them..."

Gummy's smile also became a frown, while Kala and Harry's frowns became cheeky smirks.

"I've just got one question, doc." Kala said.

"Yeah... do we each get a little... bell?" Harry finished.

Gummy raised his hands to his mouth, covering it as he let out a trembling gasp.

(Y/n) couldn't hold back her laugh.

This was going to be a very long night...

~

(Author's Note - I changed measles to chickenpox to make the plot more realistic, as Kala and Harry say they aren't worried that they will catch measles since they've already had them. When I got to that point I thought... don't they mean chickenpox? Because once you've had chickenpox you can't catch them again, whereas measles you can catch whenever and they can sometimes be fatal. Just wanted to clear that up!)
