chapter two,

You can't start your day without a good cup of coffee, that was something Dory had learned from her favourite aunt, so when her dad came knocking on the door of her trailer because he had run out of coffee, she couldn't really blame him. She forced herself out of bed and opened the door, still in the Scooby-Doo onesie he got for her when she was a teenager.

"Coffee." Derek passed her and instead of going to start his own coffee, he fell down on her bed, knowing she would do it for him which she did. Dory's head still felt heavy as she filled two cups with hot coffee, sugar and milk. She stirred them both well before handing the white cup to her father and keeping the big, pink mug for herself.

He sat up as he took the hot drink from her, groaning when he looked down at it, "I didn't want milk," He said, running his fingers through his perfectly gelled hair as the younger woman stared down at him, her gaze cold enough to give him a chill.

"Are you lactose intolerant?" She asked, knowing the answer as she took a sip of her own drink, Derek shook his head as she nodded at him, "Then shut up and drink your coffee," She gave him an upside-down smile as she made her way out of the trailer, she needed some fresh air.

Ever since DorothΓ©e had been about fourteen, everyone who knew the girl knew not to bother her before she had her first cup of coffee. She only drank coffee once a day and that was in the morning, it gave her just the right amount of energy to feel like herself. For the past week, her father had seemed to forget about this golden rule though, waking her up every morning by banging on her door and waking her up.

Now she loved sleeping over at home when they were still in New York, she would do it maybe once every other week but seeing her father every day for a week straight was making her lose her mind. She needed to move out, she needed her own place and God, she needed some privacy because when she went back into her trailer, he was reading one of the books on her nightstand.

"No," She snatched it from his hands, tossing it onto her bed as he reached for another book. "Ranger by Rebecca Sharp," He read the title as he opened the page where she had left her bookmark before she snatched that from his hand too. "Hell no," She threw that onto her bed as well, knowing she had left off on a rather indecent part of the book.

Derek got the message as he got up from her bed and opened the door leading to her shower, grabbing her shampoo before taking his leave. He did that a lot, taking her things without asking and that too was driving her out of her mind. As much as she loved her father, she was growing rather sick of him, so much so that she drove herself to work despite her fear of driving.

The drive was long, she faced a lot of road rage from the other cars on the road and she almost had a panic attack when she ended up on the highway, but she managed to get to work still in one piece. She got out of the car, her hair half messy from the number of times she had chewed on it when she got anxious. It was a nasty habit, but she had worse.

"Someone have a long night," Alex was the first one to notice the raven-haired girl as she walked to her locker, opening it and getting met with her own, rather unpleasant, reflection. "Someone wanna mind their own business." She pulled out the brush she kept in there, determined to fix the mess that was her hair when Izzie passed her and Alex. He watched her movements, a smirk on his lips while Dory tried to focus on her hair.

"What's up with your asshole face?" Dory spoke when she eventually looked away from her mirror, taking her lip gloss out of her pocket. "My what?" Alex watched as she pulled it out of her pocket, starting to unbutton her shirt, "You look like a bigger asshole than usual," She responded, tugging the shirt off as his eyes dropped to her chest before she pulled on her scrubs, groaning at his behavior.

"You're a pig, you know that." She pulled her pants over the tights she wore to avoid having to take those off too, "You're hot, you know that." She nodded at his words, very aware of that. She picked up her lip gloss again, starting to apply it when she caught a glimpse of Izzie so she shut her locker and walked away from Alex, not wanting to talk to him any longer.

"Do you know where I can find a decent apartment that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?" She watched as the blonde turned to face her, brushing her hair out of her eyes to do so. Izzie just looked behind her as Dory's eyes followed her path before she walked over to the bulletin board, apparently Meredith was looking for some roommates.

"Thank you!" She called out to Izzie, giving the blonde a chirpy smile as she went on her way to find Meredith Grey, when she found her, it turned out that Dory wasn't the only person to need a place to stay. Meredith was letting a few people down gently when Dory got there, "I heard someone was looking for roommates," Dory gave her a short smile, sitting down on the table across from the dirty blonde, placing her elbows on her knees to get a better look at her.

"I make a rule of it not to let people move into my house if they've already thrown up on my stairs," Meredith gave her a gentle smile, one of those smiles you give someone when you're letting them down easy.

Dory scoffed, trying not to laugh at the memory, "You were the one to dare me to chug that..." the young doctor paused, remembering that she had thrown about three different types of liquor into that drink, "Potion?" She furrowed her brows, it was the only word that popped into her mind.

"You told me to dare you to do it," Meredith let out a soft chuckle as she got up from her seat, Dory following her lead. "And I did it because I'm a good sport," Meredith did not look convinced, "I cleaned up my own puke, that has to count for something," Dory tried not to whine as the two met up with Izzie and George. "It doesn't." Meredith shook her head, Izzie and George seemed to pick up what the conversation was about in under five seconds.

"Why ask for roommates if you don't want any," Izzie furrowed her brows, moving to the side so Dory could stand beside her, "I do want roommates." Meredith started, her gaze moving to where Cristina was walking towards them, "We already see each other a 100 hours a week, you wanna live together too?" She asked and despite it being a rhetorical question, Dory still have an answer, "Yes, you're my best friend." She gave the woman her best puppy dog eyes, her bangs shifting slightly as Izzie pushed them back for her.

And then for some strange reason, maybe because Dory was doing some kind of weird voodoo but Meredith sighed, "Fine but no more throwing up everywhere." She didn't know why, it was definitely not the puppy eyes but she just couldn't say no to Dory.

"What?! I asked first!" George complained but Meredith's attention was already elsewhere while Dory celebrated by giving Izzie a big hug.

"So, we're bringing bribes now." Cristina looked down at the coffee in Meredith's hands, clearly meant for their resident, something to butter her up.

"My mom irons my scrubs. I need to get out of there." George stared at Meredith who was too shocked by what Cristina had said to listen, "I have to wash, condition and blow dry my dad's hair every night before he goes to bed." Dory retorted, giving George a slight shove as he gaped over at her. "You already won, why are you still playing?" The woman shrugged, taking a bite of his apple before he handed it to her, making Izzie giggle from behind them.

"It's not a bribe," Meredith responded to Cristina who shot back with, "It's totally a bribe." Which Dory agreed with but didn't say because she could not afford to be kicked out of a place she hadn't even moved into yet.

"I can cook and I'm an obsessive cleaner." Izzie and George began to crowd Meredith as Dory handed the blonde her now half eaten apple before moving to stand next to Cristina, watching everyone in the hospital doing their jobs, it was slightly peaceful for her, seeing that she had practically grown up in a hospital.

When they saw Bailey, they all ran to her, desperate for good jobs. "George, you're running the code team." Bailey started, putting charts down on the desk beside her. "Meredith, take the trauma pager, Dory will help you. Cristina, deliver the weekend labs to the patients and Izzie you're on sutures." Bailey, having already given them their jobs, started to walk away with Meredith following close after her while Izzie handed the apple back to Dory who thanked her as she sinked her teeth into it.

It wasn't long until they were all in front of Bailey, begging for a chance to get their hands on a scalpel while Dory stayed at the back, watching their desperation with a soft smile on her lips. She had her own plan for the day.

"Every intern wants to do surgery, that's not your job." Bailey shut them down really quickly, "Do you know what your job is? To make your resident happy, do I look happy? No." She looked down at them from the stairs, "Why? Because besides from Finding Dory over there, I have whiny interns." Bailey shot one glance at Dory who tried to hide her smile.

"No one holds a scalpel until I'm so happy I look like Mary-freaking-Poppins." Bailey took the coffee from Meredith, already walking away from her interns. She got halfway up the stairs when she realized they were still watching her, "Why you all still standing there?! Move!" She called out and they were all on the go, Dory clipping the trauma pager on next to her own pager.

"You can't tell me you don't want in on a surgery," Meredith and Dory split up from the rest of the group when the trauma pager went off, "I do," She said as the two started rushing to get where they're supposed to be, "You take the elevator," Dory called, already half way up the stairs, somehow beating Meredith to their patient's room as she brushed her hair back, slightly out of breath.

"You the surgeons?" A nurse asked once both women got there, "Yeah." Meredith answered, being the one that could still breath while Dory tossed the rest of her apple in the trash. "We got a rape victim." The nurse's words were barely cold when Dory paused, her entire body frozen for a split second as Meredith turned to face her. "Noelle?" She called out, like Dory was on a different planet and she was trying and failing to reach her.

"Twenty-five-year-old female found down at the park," Someone started filling them in as the two women stared down at the poor soul on the bed in front of them. She was twenty-five years old, only a year older than Dory and there she was, beaten bloody, face barely recognizable. Someone had done this to her, that was the thought that hurt the most.

"Status: post-trauma. She came in with a GCS of six. BP: 80 over 60." Another nurse helped the woman onto her back, "Have you given her any morphine?" Dory's right hand went to cradle the woman's bloody fingers as she looked down at her.

"Not yet, she has to get X-rays done first." A nurse answered as Meredith stood in shock beside Dory while the raven-haired took over the situation, knowing she needed. "Then let's roll, the faster we ease her pain the better." She pulled the small flash out of her pocket, checking the woman's vitals as Meredith finally came to and asked the nurses to call ahead for a CT as the two of them got a hold of their emotions and did their jobs.

When the patient got in surgery, Meredith and Dory stood side by side while they watched Derek operate, Dory holding her breath with every move her father made. She had barely heard what her father and Burke were saying, she had been too focused on the operation when Meredith's voice broke through to her, "Allison. Her name is Allison." Her voice was soft but it broke through to Dory better than anyone else around her.

Dory watched their focus hands as Burke removed something from Allison's abdomen, the cause of the rapture. His eyebrows furrowed, trying to figure out what he held up in the air when Dory leaned in closer, Meredith following her lead. "Does anyone know what this is?" He asked, turning to the people in the room with him, "It's something you have, and I don't," Dory responded, scrunching up her nose as Burke faced her, still confused by her comment.

"She bit it off." Meredith's mouth fell upon underneath her mask as Burke told them to spit it out, to tell him. "That's his... that's his penis." Meredith answered as the OR was filled with the noises of disgusted doctors.

As it turned out, the two young women were right and now it was their job to carry this penis around with them until the police came to collect it.  It was Dory's turn to babysit it when she ran into Derek, she had been looking for him the entire. "Is that the..." He looked down at the red cooler in her hand as she nodded, "First I'm pegging guys, now I'm babysitting a penis. I love being a doctor." She let out a hefty sigh as Derek rested a hand on her shoulder, trying to make her feel a little better.

"Listen, I'm gonna move out." He paused at her words, not sure if he heard them correctly, "And I'm moving in with your girlfriend," His face shifted into a slight frown.

"Meredith isn't my girlfriend."

Dory shrugged, "Then how'd you know I was talking about her?" She raised a brow at him as he rolled his eyes, going back to the most important part of the conversation. "Don't try to distract me, why are you moving out?" She started walking away but that didn't stop him from following her.

"I want to live in a house and not a trailer," Dory shrugged as if the answer was obvious. "But you said it was like we were camping, you love camping." Derek sighed as he followed the woman up the stairs, ever since she was sixteen, she would always prefer to take the stairs as a small work out not like she didn't spend hours in the gym already.

"I loved camping," Dory corrected him, stopping to turn to the man, "Back when camping meant that you, me and mom would build a pillow fort in a tent." Her voice went into a low whisper, almost like she barely wanted to hear her own words. They stung him, he tried to hide the hurt but the second it flashed in his eyes, she saw it. "Now I'm tired of camping," She let out a sigh, feeling a weight get lifted off her chest when she tried to take another step, but her foot slipped and she, the cooler and the pen in that she clipped to her sleeve all fell down.

Derek paused for a second before reaching out to help her, grabbing her left arm as she groan out softly. "Are you okay?" He asked, trying to hide his smile as she picked up the cooler with the penis and shook her sleeve, her pen falling out with some blood on the tip.

"I'm bleeding," She answered, rolling up her white sleeve to find a cut on her arm, who cuts themself with a pen? A pen?! "Do you need help?" She shook her head, the wound stung as she put her pen into her pocket. "Nope, we're in a hospital." She mumbled, knowing she had to go down the stairs down until she reached the pit.

She grabbed a kit out of the supply closet, sitting down on the ground, using the cooler as a chair. The lighting was awful but it would do, she told herself as she moved the needle to her skin when the door opened again. "What are you doing in here?" She looked up at the blonde who stood at the door, she looked like an angel in that moment.

"Bleeding," She watched as Izzie fell onto her knees in front of her, "You didn't even clean the wound." Izzie shook her head at the doctor, she had expected better. "No time," Dory muttered as Izzie pulled out some wipes, cleaning her arm properly as Dory cringed at how badly it stung.

"It's like you're asking for an infection," Izzie pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose as she took the needle from Dory, "I can do it myself." The younger woman said but Izzie just shook her head again, "You can do stitches using your non-dominant hand?" Izzie asked, raising a brow at her new patient who rolled her eyes. "Any idiot can use their right hand to do something," She scoffed, watching as the needle went into her arm, this time she barely reacted.

"Hey," Izzie started, clearly wanted to ask the woman something now, "Can you speak Chinese?" She asked, moving the needle in and out of Dory's skin, "I speak twelve languages but sadly, no."

"Do you think Cristina can?"

There was a small beat of silence before Dory answered, "She's Korean."

"Oh," Izzie finished up the last stitch, grabbing the first band aid she finds and placing it on the woman's arm. She gently traced her thumb over the band aid, making sure it wouldn't come off when her thumb brushed Dory's skin. The raven-haired woman smiled at the touch when Izzie placed a quick on the band aid, she didn't know what possessed her to do it but Dory didn't stop her, she didn't even say anything about it.

"Thank you," They both got onto their feet, Dory picking up the cooler as she looks over at Izzie, a grateful smile on her face, "What are friends for." The blonde responded as they made their way out of the small supply closet, Dory pointing at the exit as Izzie nodded, understanding what she meant. "I'll see you later, okay!" That was the last thing Dory said as she ran down the hallway, looking for Meredith because it was officially her turn to watch the cooler.

She had her coat off by the time she found Meredith, her bandage visible as she held out the cooler to Meredith. "I'm eating." Meredith stood beside Cristina who cringed at the cooler, knowing what was inside. "Oh, and Alex is looking for you," Dory looked over at Cristina, who much like Dory, had been avoiding the man like the plague.

"Shepherd is looking for you," Cristina responded, getting an eye roll from Dory as she mumbled something about wanting to shoot herself. The response got an interesting look from Meredith when they heard a knock on the glass. Of course it was Derek, somehow, he had hunted her down.

"Take this," Dory handed Meredith the penis, starting to run into the building and by default running from her father as she ran down the hallways, Bailey yelling at her to slow down after she took her third turn, "Sorry!" She called out, running right into George who groaned when she grabbed him to make sure he didn't fall over.

"Why are you in such a rush?" He asked as she pulled away from him, brushing her hair out of her face, "I just remembered that I understand Chinese," That wasn't entirely a lie, Dory did understand a little bit but she didn't speak any which was why she told Izzie she couldn't but she understood some and that had to count for something plus it gave her a good reason to run from her father in a hospital.

George stared at her in confusion, not sure that that had to do with her running, but she just patted her shoulder and went off to find the blonde but sadly for her, she couldn't find Izzie anywhere and before she could try, her pager went off because they had found the rapist.

Dory, Cristina and Meredith stood by as they watched Bailey perform surgery on the man,
