as we walked towards the hufflepuff common room, hayls turned to me with a warm smile.
"so, in a minute, we'll get to our common room, and then hannah and i will show you to your dorm. honestly, i really hope you end up in our room. it's just the three of us, and we've been waiting for a fourth roommate." she paused, then gestured to someone approaching. "oh, look, here comes susan! susan, this is eloise diggory."

susan greeted me with an equally kind smile. "you're the new girl, right? welcome to the best house at hogwarts. i'm susan bones, and these two are my roommates. hopefully, you'll be our fourth!"

"hi, it's nice to meet you!" i said eagerly. "and i hope i get to share a room with you three, too."

at that moment, cedric came running up to us, his face lighting up when he saw me. he seemed like he had something important to say.
"hey, elo! hi, girls!" he greeted them warmly before turning to me. "so, as a prefect, i just wanted to let you know that you'll be sharing a room with them." he looked genuinely happy about it.

i barely had time to respond before all three girls squealed with excitement and pulled me into a group hug.
"yay!"
"we're going to be roommates!"
"this is going to be the best year ever!"

cedric chuckled at the scene before excusing himself. "well, i'll leave you to it. have fun!"

when we finally arrived at the common room, i couldn't believe how beautiful it was. it was one of the coziest places i had ever seen, with plants draped across every surface and vibrant green hues filling the room. it felt alive, welcoming, and magical.
"this has to be the most gorgeous common room i've ever seen," i said in awe.

hannah grinned as she led the way. "come on, let's head up. if we go upstairs and take a right, we'll find our dorm."

as we climbed the stairs, a boy called out to hannah. "hey, hannah, is that the new girl?"

"yeah, justin, this is the new girl," hannah replied with a dramatic eye roll.

the boy stepped closer and gave me a polite smile. "justin finch-fletchley. nice to meet you."

another boy, walking a few steps behind him, smirked. "wow, justin, you're really formal today."

justin huffed. "i'm just trying to be respectful."

the second boy grinned and introduced himself. "i'm ernie, and this guy here is zacharias. you can call him zach."

i smiled back. "i'm eloise, but you can call me elo."

justin nodded. "well, we'll leave you to settle in. see you tomorrow morning!"

"yeah, bye!" added ernie and zach in unison before they disappeared down the hall.

"they seem nice," i commented as we continued up the stairs.

susan chuckled. "oh, they're nice enough, but ernie and zach can be really annoying sometimes."

we all laughed, and for the first time that day, i felt like i belonged. maybe this would be the best year ever.

as we walked toward the dorm, a question popped into my head. "do you know if there's a bathtub in our room? or at least nearby?" i asked curiously.

hayls gave me a puzzled look. "why are you asking that? as far as i know, there's one in the prefects' bathroom, but you'd need to be a prefect to use it."

hannah smirked and chimed in. "but since your brother's a prefect, i'd say you could probably sneak in pretty easily."

"oh, okay, thanks! i'll text him and ask," i said with a small laugh, already reaching for my phone to send a quick message.

as i walked toward the bathroom, i couldn't help but admire the architecture of the school. hogwarts really was beautiful-intricate arches, soaring ceilings, and walls steeped in history. maybe someday i'd work with something like this... though honestly, i still had plenty of years to figure out my future.

when i reached the bathroom, i noticed steam billowing out. was someone already using it?

"you're a little late, princess," a boy's voice called out from inside.

i rolled my eyes. "princess? what is this, some dark romance book?" i snapped back.

"do i know you?" he asked, completely unfazed.

"no, and you can leave now," i said firmly.

"wait a second... you're elodie, right?" he said, clearly trying to get under my skin-and unfortunately succeeding.

"it's not elodie; it's eloise," i said, irritation creeping into my voice.

"eh, same thing," he replied nonchalantly, not even bothering to look at me.

"um, no, it's not the same thing," i shot back, crossing my arms. "anyway, great talk. now, leave."

"wow, you really want me gone that badly?" he asked, pretending to be offended.

"yeah, why do you think i'm saying it?"

"fine, fine, princess. see you tomorrow," he said, closing the door behind him as he finally left.

ugh. what an annoying guy. and princess? seriously? at least he was gone now, and i could focus.

after slipping into my swimsuit, i grabbed my phone and charmed a quick call to juni. i needed answers-hopefully, she had some information about logan or, at the very least, something worth knowing.

as soon as the call connected, i was greeted by the excited voices of my friends, all talking at once.
"elo! how was your first day? did it go well? and which house are you in?" they asked, overlapping each other.

i smiled, though i couldn't shake off the frustration from earlier. "hey, girls. my day was fine, and i'm doing okay-except for the fact that i just met the most annoying prick in the bathroom. hopefully, i'll never see him again. oh, and for your last question, i'm in hufflepuff-cedric's house."

"that's amazing! well... except for the prick part, but everything else is great!" lils said enthusiastically.

"how about you guys? how's your day been? and... do you have any updates on logan?" i asked nervously, bracing myself.

silence.

"it's been a good day for us, but... about logan..." ki began, hesitating.

"just spit it out," i said, my stomach twisting in knots.

"well," lils started, "i went to ask him why he hasn't texted you or replied to your post. and guess what? he gave me the most basic excuse ever-'i didn't have any battery, sorry.'" she scoffed. "like, seriously? does he not know magic exists? but that's not even the worst part. want to know who we saw him with today?"

my chest tightened. "who?" i asked nervously.

"genevie," juni said bluntly.

genevie. of course. the same girl who'd told me there was nothing going on between them.

"with genevie? are you sure it was her?" i asked, hoping-praying-they were wrong.

"we're 100% sure," lils confirmed. "and we weren't the only ones who saw them. oli saw them too."

"wow," i said bitterly, anger and sadness rising in my chest. "it's always the ones who are 'just friends.' why couldn't he just tell me? i was going to find out one way or another anyway."

my voice wavered, and for a moment, i just stared at the enchanted call, unsure of what to say next.

"are you okay? don't worry, tomorrow we'll give him an earful, and if you want, i can tell oli to stop being his friend as a show of support," lils offered.

"i'm fine, don't worry," i replied softly. "and leave oli out of it-he didn't do anything wrong." my voice betrayed the sadness i was trying to hide. "anyway, i'll let you girls go. i need to finish my bath and get some rest for tomorrow. i'll message you later."

"bye, elo," they said, their voices overlapping.
"don't overthink it too much."
"if you need anything, we're just a call away."

with that, the call ended.

i sighed, sinking back into the warm water. just when i thought i was having a good day, he had to ruin it. and genevie-of all people. i still couldn't wrap my head around it.

but if i looked on the bright side, i reminded myself, i was in a new school, surrounded by new people. who knows? maybe i'd even meet the love of my life here.

once i finished my bath, i changed into my pajamas and headed back to my dorm. as i walked in, i noticed hayley looking at me curiously.

"are you okay?" she asked, putting her book down on her nightstand.

hannah and susan's eyes followed me as i crossed the room and sat down on my bed. "yeah, i'm fine. just a little annoyed about some jerk i ran into in the bathroom," i said, trying to brush it off.

but hayls wasn't buying it. her expression said she knew there was more to the story.

i avoided her gaze, grabbed my things from the bathroom, and started organizing them in my closet. just as i closed the door, my phone buzzed with a notification. i glanced at the screen and saw i'd just been added to a new group chat.

curious-and maybe a little distracted from my earlier frustration-i opened it to see who had included me.
