"please wake up elo while i'm making breakfast," i hear my dad say to cedric.
"you're making breakfast? don't you have work?" cedric asks, and i can practically hear the disbelief in his voice.
"yes, i'm making breakfastβwith a little help from figgy. and about work, i told them i'd be late because i want to take both of you to the train," dad replies casually.
i hear cedric open my door, but i keep my eyes shut, pretending to be asleep.
"elo, wake up," cedric says, his voice calm at first. when i don't respond, he sighs and starts yelling, "eloise, please wake up! you need to get ready for school and check your suitcase! dad's making breakfast with figgy."
before i can react, goldie starts barking like crazy, waking up ivory in the process.
"okay, okay, i'm awake!" i groan, sitting up and glaring at cedric. "you don't have to yell. why are you waking me up this early anyway?"
cedric gives me a pointed look, clearly unimpressed. "maybe, just maybe, because you specifically asked me to wake you up at this time so you could shower, get ready, and check your suitcase," he says, sounding beyond done with me.
"oh... right." i pause, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "okay, you can go now. i'll see you downstairs in a bit."
once he leaves, i start rummaging through my closet, trying to figure out what to wear. i want to look cute, warm, and trendy, but of course, nothing feels rightβeven though my closet is packed. after what feels like forever, i finally settle on a black sweater, a black mini skirt, tights, and black boots. to keep warm, i grab a white puffy jacket and a red scarf.
after showering and getting dressed, my phone buzzes with a message from juni:
"good morning, elo! good luck on your first day. you'll do great, and you'll make tons of friends!"
i think about calling her but remember it's 3 a.m. her time. still, when i check, i see she's online.
"hey, juni! sorry for calling so late," i say when she answers.
"hi, elo! don't worryβyou know i'm always up late. can we switch to a video call? i want to see your outfit," she says, sounding a little sleepy but still excited.
"sure! i was just about to suggest that," i reply, switching to video. on the screen, juni appears, clearly half-asleep but smiling.
"i'm so nervous," i admit, flopping onto my bed. "i don't even know how they pick houses, and i feel like i'm overthinking everything. oh, and logan? he hasn't even commented on my main post after i said 'i love you' in front of everyone. he didn't even like it! can you believe that? and the last time we talked? december 31st. that's rightβhe hasn't messaged me since new year's eve. i bet he's already moved on. i'm trying not to care, but i do care, and i don't know what to do!"
as i ramble, i watch juni's face shift with every wordβconcern, disbelief, annoyance (probably at logan).
"elo, breathe," she says softly. "it's okay to feel this way. honestly, i thought it was weird, too, that he didn't comment or like your post. and he hasn't talked to me eitherβand i'm his cousin. but i'll see him at school today, and if anything feels off, i'll text you, okay?"
"thanks, juni. i don't know what i'd do without you," i say, smiling at her. "love you. i'll call you later."
"love you too, elo. i'm here if you need me. bye!" she says before ending the call.
i let out a deep breath and put my phone down. first day jitters, logan drama... what a morning.

"miss diggory, your father asked me to check your suitcase to make sure you haven't forgotten anything before heading down for breakfast," figgy says politely.
i sigh, shaking my head. "figgy, how many times do i have to tell you? please don't call me 'miss diggory.' just eloise or elo is fine. and yeah, i feel like i'm missing something, but i can't figure out what."
"my apologies, missβuh, elo," figgy says, correcting herself with a small bow. "perhaps you're missing your winter pajamas or your makeup?"
"oh, you're totally right! thanks, figgy. i'll see you downstairs in a bit," i say, grabbing what i need.
as i head down the stairs, i hear the click of paws behind me. i glance back to see goldie and ivory following close. goldie is my dad's dog, always loyal and energetic, while ivoryβmy beautiful catβwas a gift from mom and felipe on my 16th birthday, meant to be my companion at ilvermorny.
"good morning, elo," dad greets me as i walk into the dining room. "i made waffles with strawberriesβwell, figgy helped." he grins as he pours syrup on his plate. "by the way, did figgy already check your suitcase? i hope you don't forget anything, but if you do, don't worryβi'll send it to you."
"thanks, dad," i say, taking a seat. "oh, do you know where goldie and ivory's food is? i want to feed them before we leave."
"no need," he says with a wave of his hand. "i'll feed them while you and cedric eat."
breakfast goes by quickly, the waffles warm and sweet, making it hard to feel too nervous about the day ahead. once we're done, figgy uses magic to bring all the suitcases downstairs, effortlessly floating them into the car. i grab ivory's carrier, holding it close. she meows softly as if sensing the journey ahead.
for now, i keep her with me. once we arrive, i'll set her up properly for the ride to hogwarts.
when we arrive at the station, and i notice some students running straight at a wall. what a weird way to get to the train, i think to myself.
"okay, elo, here's what you're going to do," dad says, pointing to the wall. "you'll run toward that wall. watch cedricβhe'll go first, and we'll meet you on the other side. got it?"
i stare at him like he's lost his mind. run into a wall? seriously? but i figure i have nothing to loseβwell, except for embarrassing myself in front of everyone. classic.
with a deep breath, i take off running as fast as i can. my heart races as i near the wall, but instead of crashing, i find myself standing on the other side, staring at the hogwarts express. the platform is bustling with students, parents, siblings, and friends, everyone saying their goodbyes or hauling their trunks onto the train.
"come here, you two," dad says, pulling us aside. "okay, cedric, take care of your sister, please. even if it's your last year, behave yourself. and elo, ced will help you figure everything out at school. if you have any questions, ask him or your dormmates. i hope you both have a great time going back after winter break. i have to go now, but i love you both."
he gives us each a tight hug before disappearing into the crowd.
"alright," cedric says, turning to me, "our luggage is already loaded onto the train. let me take you to hayley and her friends."
i blink at him, confused. "wait... i'm not sitting with you?"
"um... no, i thought you and hayley hit it off earlier, so i figured it'd be good for you to hang out with people your age instead of tagging along in my compartment," he says, trying to sound casual. "don't worryβhayley knows you'll be with her, and if you need anything, just message me, okay?"
"oh... okay, i guess," i reply hesitantly, following him as we weave through the crowded train corridors to find hayley.

as i step into hayley's compartment, her face lights up, and she practically shouts, "elo, you're here! omg, i thought you were gonna miss the train. elo, these are my best friends, pansy parkinson and daphne greengrass."
"hi! it's so nice to meet you," daphne says warmly.
"you're cedric's sister, right? you look even prettier in person," pansy adds, flashing me a small smile.
"uh, yeah, i'm cedric's sister. and thank youβit's nice to meet you both," i reply, feeling a little shy.
"i can't wait for you to meet the boys; you'll love them," hayley says cheerfully. boys? i thought it'd just be the four of us in here. guess not.
"and what about your boyfriend, hayls?" i ask, raising an eyebrow.
"boyfriend? i don't have a boyfriend," hayley answers quickly, a little too quickly.
"you don't have a boyfriend? he's practically your boyfriend. you two are glued together," pansy teases, smirking at her.
"and what about you, pansy? do you have someoneβ" hayley starts, but pansy interrupts her mid-sentence.
"don't just put me on the spot! daphne has someone too, not just me," pansy says with mock indignation.
"alright, daphne, how are things with theo?" hayley asks, turning to her.
"well, it's... something, i guess. over winter break, we mostly just hung out at each other's houses to... hook up," daphne admits, her tone softening. "but beyond that, nothing serious. i really do want something real with him, but we all know how he is."
"fair enough. and you, pansy?" i ask.
"fine, i'll spill. but let me close the door first," she says, standing up.
just as she's about to shut the door, there's a loud commotion outside.
"wow, so rude, closing the door in our faces," a boy says dramatically, pretending to be offended.
"i didn't see you there, sorry, blaise," pansy replies, rolling her eyes.
"who's that?" asks another boy with light brown hair as he glances in my direction. suddenly, all the boys with him turn to look at me. i freeze, unsure of what to say, waiting for someone to introduce me.
"she's eloise diggory, cedric's sister," hayley chimes in, her tone cheerful as ever. "elo, these are blaiseβthe one acting offendedβenzo, tom, theo, and draco, though you already know him," she says, pointing to each of them. "wait, someone's missing. where's mattheo?"
"she's probably off somewhere with his 'new girlfriend,'" tom says, not even looking up from the book in his hands.
"girlfriend? rue when was this?" pansy asks, clearly confused.
"you know how it isβjust a girlfriend of the moment. he'll probably break up with her tomorrow," tom replies nonchalantly.
"i genuinely don't understand how girls find him attractive," pansy says, shaking her head. "and i'm not just saying that because i'm a lesbian; he's an actual jerkβ"
"you're awfully quiet," says the boy i think is enzo, cutting pansy off mid-sentence. i'm not entirely sure, though.
i glance at him, unsure of what to say. i wasn't expecting to be the center of attention, especially not with a group of people i barely know. the comment catches me off guard, but i try to compose myself, hoping he's not referring to me being silent for too long.
i stay silent for a moment, unsure of what to say. "um, i don't know, what do you want me to say?" i reply, feeling a bit uncomfortable. hayley notices my unease.
"okay, forget it. she's new, obviously she's going to be nervous about starting halfway through the year. but if you want, you can tell us what house you were in at ilvermorny and maybe share something about yourself," hayley says kindly.
"um... my house was thunderbird, which is known for having a strong association with adventure, freedom, and exploration. and, well, yeah, i'm a little nervous about this whole change, but i've got so much on my mind right now, it's hard to process. all because of that stupid asshole. i literally tell him 'i love you' on my main account and he doesn't like or comment on it. i seriously hate him. the year was going so well and he ruined it. i guess it makes sense now why my ex, who was homophobic, switched me for a guy." i say without really thinking.
i look around and see everyone with expressions of empathy and confusion. even the guy who was reading stopped to pay attention to me.
"um, oops, sorry. i tend to overreact easily," i say, feeling a little ashamed.
"no, no, it's okay. it's good to say what's on our minds," enzo says.
"i say you should just tell him the truth over text. i'll help you figure out what to say," pansy adds.

time passed, and we were all nearly there. "you guys stay here, we're going to change in the bathroom," tom says.
"change?" i ask, confused.
"yeah, he means we're about to arrive at hogwarts, and we need to put on our uniforms," daphne explains.
"put on our uniforms? that's so different from ilvermorny," i say, trying to wrap my head around it.
"what do you mean?" hayley asks, as she starts changing.
"i mean, at ilvermorny, when it's back-to-school or after winter break, we don't wear uniforms right away. our headmaster lets us come in wearing whatever we traveled in. only the first day and some fridays require no uniform," i explain, taking off my sweater and pulling on a button-up shirt.
when i look up, i notice the shocked expressions on their faces. they look completely taken aback.
"wow."
"i hope dumbledaddy lets us do that," says pansy, half-joking.
"and what if i transfer?!" daphne adds. "pans, don't say that, haha!" hayls laughs, but i can't help but feel a little amused by their reactions.
i smile, feeling a bit lighter despite the whirlwind of nerves and excitement inside me. hogwarts, it seems, was going to be full of surprises.
when we arrived, i was immediately separated from the others. apparently, the rest of them were already inside, listening to dumbledore's announcements for the new semester. i wasn't sure if that was his name, but it sounded like it. as the doors started to open, a wave of nervousness washed over me. this was itβthe start of a new chapter. i had to walk up to the stool, trying to be bold, even though my nerves were practically choking me.
"students, please welcome eloise diggory. she'll be joining us for the fourth year. she's transferred from ilvermorny, we're happy to have you here, miss diggory," dumbledore's voice rang out, his kind eyes twinkling as he spoke.
when i finally reached the stool, a teacher placed a old hat on my head. "an old hat?" wait, what? was i hearing things? or had i gone completely mad?
"ah, no, my dear, you're not crazy," a voice inside my head spoke. "i'm the sorting hat, and i'll be determining which house you belong to. let's see... i can tell you were a thunderbird at ilvermornyβmuch like gryffindor and hufflepuff. hmmm, gryffindor? no, i don't think so. you don't quite fit there... hufflepuff, on the other hand, i know your brother, his friends, hayley, and hannah are there. you'll fit in there quite well."
the sorting hat's voice echoed in my mind, and i felt its weight on my head. my heart was pounding faster now. what if it was wrong? what if i didn't belong anywhere? i couldn't help but question everythingβwhat if i didn't belong here? what if this was all a mistake?
"well, as you wish," the hat finally said, making its decision.
"hufflepuff!" the sorting hat shouted, and immediately, the hufflepuff table erupted into cheers and applause. some even whistled, making me feel a little better. to my surprise, a few students from slytherin and ravenclaw joined in with their own claps, which made me feel less out of place.
still, as i made my way toward the hufflepuff table, my hands were trembling, my heart racing in my chest. i couldn't believe it. this was real. i had just been sorted into a new house, a new world.
this was it. a new beginning, a fresh start. a new house, new friends, new challenges. and while i was terrified, i couldn't deny the excitement building up inside me. would i fit in? would i make friends? could i handle this? all i could do was walk forward, determined to make the most of this opportunity, even if it scared me.
