Your eyes closed, focus. You grimaced your face with a heavy sigh. Your hands crossed over your chest as you were leaning over the glass barrier that the room Chaos Council were in and talking. Your eyes blinked open hearing Sonic's voice from Nine's communicator.

"Hang on, Nine, Y/n. I am coming for you two."

"No." Nine quickly answered, "Don't worry about us." He turned away from the Council whispering into his communicator. He tried to reassure him. He already knew how reckless he could get from his small amount of time with him, unless he got into his mind that you two are actually fine with this. Which you were.

"We're working on a plan to get the Shards from the inside. The best thing for you to do is to get the next Shard before they do." He made a move for you to come closer. You raised a brow and listened. You leaned over his communicator.

"Are you sure?" As Sonic's nervous voice came out, you smiled at his worry. You now understand what is going through Nine's mind and you try to help ease him up.

You rolled your eyes, "We'll be fineee. You worry about the other shards. Trust us a bit."

Nine agreed, "These eggheads are playing into my hands. They don't know I've been downloading their tech." He spoke smugly.

You playfully nudge his shoulder laughing, "Damn it, Sonic. Look at what you've done. You rub off on him!" Nine huffed and rolled his eyes, what betrayed his supposed annoyance was his smile.

Sonic chuckled, "What can I say? I always leave my impression wherever I go."

"I think that's enough to boost your ego, Mr needlemouse. It's already big enough to deal with."

Sonic gasped while Nine snorted, he quickly held his mouth from laughing. Obviously, he wasn't expecting that. It was so sudden and the reactions you get even made you laugh. Sonic groaned, "Aw, you promise to never use that name again!" He sounded hurt but you knew he was faking it.

"Needlemouse?" Nine stuffed his laughs mixed with confusion.

"You better get used to it."

Sonic continues whining and groaning while you continue with your bold remarks. Annoying him and him teasing you back for revenge.

"I lost count how many times you fell flat on your face."

"That was only one time!"

Though both of you deep down just continue this for shits and laughs, to hear him laugh more. Hearing him laugh made both of you feel happy and relaxed from the stress of your stations.

Nine push your face out of his communicator before you can say anything else more, both of you still having that afterglow of laughing so much, "Okay, okay, that's enough. We are getting out of topic here. It's a serious matter you know. The Chaos Council has two Shards, remember? We shouldn't be having fun."

You made a thumbs down motion, "Boomer. It's not fun if it's too easy."

"We are not trying to have fun."

You poked your tongue out at him, "That's probably why you are so emo."

"Shut up."

"It won't kill to laugh a bit."

He scoffed, "Yeah, so, can we like go back now? If the princess is finished?" He faked a nice tone.

You simply smiled, "Sure."

He shook his head, glancing towards the still talking Council, "Where was I?"

Sonic spoke, "That I should not come and get you two?"

"Ah, yes. Get to the Shard first then get out. We better get going now." He glared towards the Council and closed the communicator.

You two glance at each other.

"Needlemouse. Really? Where do you get these kinds of nicknames?"

You grinned, but before you could say anything he sushed you, "Forget it. I changed my mind. Let's go. We have things to do."

He carefully walked away, you trailed off behind him, making sure no one in sight or anyone noticed your disappearance.

"Do you remember what we talked about?"

You become nervous with his question once again.

"Do you really think I can do it, Nine? Weren't I supposed to be the one watching your back?" You gazed into his back worriedly.

"You will. But right now you are needed somewhere else and if we can use this what's stopping us? Besides, I know you can do it, you just need to... focus, ahmm... alright? You will do fine." Nine awkwardly patted your back causing you to smile a bit, he trust you. That somehow made you feel better. His lack of knowledge about how exactly to make someone feel content was nearly gonna make you laugh but you held back. What counts is he tries.

He tried to find a good spot for you both to hide for the time being. "Think about it like, your soul leaving your body, uh like astral travel, slipping away, your being and your shell separating."

You grimaced your face at his comparison, "You are talking like, this is normal for me. And I shall remind you, it is not. You know, you make it sound even scarier right?" He frowned at that.

You quickly shook your hands, "Ah, I am sorry. I didn't mean to--"

"No, you are right." Nine thought a bit more, trying to come up with something better, "Think about... how it felt."

"How it felt?"

"Yeah. When you appear next to Sonic in another world. You said you could sense your 'essence' when it went with Sonic, feeling it's asset. How it's presence made you feel, that was the only thing you could sense back then right?"

You paused with his answer. "...Yeah... That was the only thing..." you swallowed, "...I felt." You feel really bad lying to him for the first time.

"Try to think about it, feel it again. Your essence inside and... well, make it fly away! Fly Y/n, like a free being. Like a ghost... if you want to... think it that way."

You tapped your thighs trying to think back at it, but the place you two are making you even more anxious than you already are. Inside Eggman's prophecy. You couldn't focus comfortably enough to move on with it. Knowing they might attack you anytime is not a very nice feeling. You crossed your arms with a sigh.

Nine turned towards a corner and used his metal tails to type something in the keypad next to the metal door. It slid open when you two walked in. Nine made sure the door stayed closed until he, himself, wanted the other way around.

You keep circling around aimlessly as he walks up to you jumping off of his tails. You rubbed your face frustered, how can I feel that again anyway?! "Agh, I can't do it!"

"Well if you want to help Sonic you have to!" He shouted back, he quickly stopped himself as his eyes widened, "Sorry, didn't mean to shout like that." He grumbled to himself, glancing away.

"You are not very helpful, Nine." The words get out of your mouth before you can even think. You grumbled and sat close to a wall.

Nine sighed, that was a mistake he will never make again. He observed your features for a bit, "How interesting isn't it?"

You looked up at him confused, "What?"

"You didn't sepeare this time to go with Sonic."

"Maybe it's because we are also in the shatter space with him right now? Like that last time?"

"That's not what I meant. Back in Boscage Maze. He went in first, you should have... Maybe you are getting the hold of it. This is good because if you manage to do it on your own again. We can gain an advantage. So..." you sensed there was a second meaning under his heavy sentences but you just couldn't point out what.

He trailed in front of you and kneeled, he took a deep breath, "Will you help us... please? I want you to try one more time. Think a bit harder. Feel the only thing you felt the whole time you were with me." He took a heavy breath, "I know you recall it." He sounded far from happy. I mean of course why would he be happy under Eggman's rules and all. He never was but maybe something changed after your and Sonic's arrival. There was hope lightning in him now. And... sadness? Regret? Why? You don't know. He reached for your hands, "I won't ever leave your side. I promise." He smiled.

You freezed, slowly glancing up from your hands to his face. You never saw him smile like that, so genuine, so pure. Fuck it. You never saw him SMILE before! Just like you never saw him laugh that much. Knowing you make him happy made you happy.

You swallowed and blinked glancing away, trying to let out an answer for him, "I'll try. But I can't promise."

"That's a start." He sat in front of you. You moved in your cross legged spot uncomfortably. His hand gently tightens on yours. "Relax. No one can hurt you. Not in my watch. Remember the time I caught you after you fell? That was my mistake. I apologize. This time. I won't even let you fall in the first place."

That made you somehow laugh, you couldn't help but smile at him. He return it with the same warmth. You took a deep breath and sighed, eyes gazing into his hands, you squeezed them a bit as if that would help you gain strength. Blinking your eyes closed, you tried to focus. This time instead of around you or yourself. You focused on the energies like you were used to. When you find Sonic's, your smile widen. The blue ball of energy, you never misses it from anyone else. But this time there was a bit difference in his normal energy, there was something else added into his being. Something familiar but this kind of familiarity twisting your stomach into knots. Like those shards.

You try to shake the feeling creeping up away. Okay, now that you find him you just have to figure out the rest. How can you be able to be literally there with him!

You try to feel the thing he feels. The wind, the water. Wait, you know that feeling of the wind blowing on your face, the salt sticking to your body and hair, the smell, the blue skies and matching ocean. Your essence moving with this familiarity. HE IS ALREADY IN NO PLACE. Great. Everything starts to become a bit more lively and realistic. You didn't want this to slip away. The darkness and blue faded. You wanted to reach out and do just that. You saw your hand. It was all too real, a bit ghostly but you managed to crawl and move away. You find all your limbs actually moving, your eyes aren't close anymore. You giddily laughed and started to run towards the ocean only to halt. Did you actually do it? You glanced back, towards the darkness. You squint your eyes and smile to see the connection within you and your body, and Nine too. In this state would you be able to control your both selves? You wanted to find out but hearing a big explosion you turned away with a gasp. You turn back towards the ocean. Just a few more running away...

So you continue running, testing can be done later. You need to help Sonic. God, Did you just disprove that 'I cannot be in two places at the same time?' Well, you are not exactly in the same place at the same time... or are you?
