"Are you going to pout the rest of the day?"
"I'm not pouting. I can't just lay in bed in peace?"
"No." Cherry rolls her eyes. She rolls over, giving Sean her complete attention.
"I'm fine. I just want to lay down for a while."
"Because of Claire?"
"No. Because I want to." He stares at her for a few moments before sighing.
"Move, please." She does so, scooting until there's enough room for him. He lays down beside her, leaving only a bit of space between them. "What's wrong, chiqui? You know you can talk to me." A tired sigh escapes her lips.
"Nothing. It doesn't really concern me anyhow."
"You're mad because she snapped at you?"
"I just-" she rubs her face roughly, trying to find the right words to say. After a few moments, she speaks again. "Why do you guys not talk about your ma? Like if she did something terrible, I get it. But for the longest time, I thought she died since you never talked about her." She turns her head to him, a conflicted look on his face. "You don't have to say if you don't want," she says quickly.
"It's fine. I just need a second." She gives him all the time he needs. She places her hand on top of his, mindlessly rubbing her thumb against it. He takes in a deep breath. "She left after Daniel was born," he exhales. "We haven't heard from her since. Not me or my dad. I never knew why, but the way my dad was after it was..."
"He was heartbroken, I'm guessing."
"I don't feel like that describes it, honestly." He lets out a tired sigh, his mind obviously clouded with thoughts. "Since then, we've never talked about her. And Dad never brought us here. My guess is he didn't want to hear any apologies from Claire and Stephen." She pulls her hand away from his and places it against his face. His eyes close instantly, loving how warm her hand is.
"I'm sorry. That sounds rough." He opens his eyes and stares at her momentarily, admiring her sincerity.
"You've had it rough, too." She rolls her eyes at his words.
"Not really."
"What about what happened with your mom?"
"I already blocked it out," she waves him off.
"And your dad?"
"I haven't seen him since we left. Good riddance." Sean stares at her, and she has to look away after a few seconds. He gently grabs her chin, forcing her to look at him once more.
"Cherry, I'm serious." She can feel her face flush from embarrassment. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before opening them.
"I miss my mama. But I know if she were here now, she'd probably be a bit disappointed in me in how I've handled myself since she's died. That makes me feel better that she doesn't have to see it." Her voice is slow and soft, as if she is afraid someone other than Sean will hear. He places his hand on her cheek like she did for him. It's cool against her skin. "I miss my dad even though I know I shouldn't."
"I miss my mom too sometimes. I hate her, but-" he lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding, "I miss when she was here."
"Are we stupid for missing them?" Her eyes become glossy at her own words.
"I don't think so." He pauses before asking, "Do you?"
A few beats of silence pass. "I guess not. They're our parents," she shrugs. She pulls her hand away from his face, leaving him wanting her warmth, before placing it on top of his hand. She embraces his touch for some time, and Sean finds it hard to breathe while she does so. "I like what we have, though. The three Stooges, you know?"
"Yeah. It could be worse." He swallows roughly, finding his mouth a bit dry. Some time passes before he speaks. He clears his throat, gaining Cherry's attention. "We should probably go with Daniel outside. He's probably pouting downstairs." She sighs dramatically, rolling her eyes as well before looking back at him.
"I wish we could stay like this for a while. You got pretty eyes to look at, mi corazรณn." His eyes widen dramatically as a grin forms on her lips. He pulls his hand away from her, covering his face as an annoyed groan escapes him. He rolls onto his back, putting some space between them.
"Why the new nickname?" he sighs out. She sits up on the bed, watching as blush moves from his face down his neck.
"Well, you stole cariรฑo from me, so I had to come up with a new one." She places her hand over his heart, feeling him tense under her immediately. "You want to go outside, now, mi corazรณn? Daniel is waiting." she teases once more. He nods his head, and Cher has to bite back a laugh. "I'll meet you downstairs." She pats his sternum before leaving the room. Once she does, Sean is able to breathe out. Despite just having her hand on his heart, he knows that's not the reason for the warmth in his chest.
"Aaaaawwww, finally!" Daniel exclaims, jumping into the snow. "Reminds me of the cabin. Right?" He doesn't wait for a response before howling into the air. Sean rolls his eyes before doing the same, Cherry watches the two with a smile, her hands stuffed in Sean's hoodie she's borrowing. She figured if anyone spotted them, it'd be weird for her to run around in a shirt. "Watch out for the pack!" he exclaims.
"Damn right!" Sean agrees.
Daniel only takes a few more steps before pausing for a moment, holding his stomach.
"I think I ate too fast," he groans.
"As usual."
"You can't say anything either, Sean-y boy." He turns his head, giving her a confused look. She places her hand in front of her face before mimicking drinking a bottle. "You drink a little too fast, too, mi corazรณn." She walks past him, leaving him flushed and rigid, and follows Daniel to the shed. It takes him a few moments to gather his bearings before following the two.
"Check it out!" Daniel exclaims. He stands on his tiptoes to look into the shed's window. "I wonder what's inside. Maybe there's a Frisbee," he wonders aloud. "Sean! Can we open the shed now?"
"Yeah-" he clears his throat, "Yeah, I'm coming." He pulls out the key he got from Stephen. "Get ready for Storage Wars..." his words trail off as he looks at the lock. Cherry and Daniel walk over, standing behind him.
"What's wrong?" Daniel asks.
"Frozen shut, of course," he sighs.
"Scoot, you two," Cherry says, rolling up her sleeves. The two do, watching as her hand glows a soft red. She wraps her fingers around the lock, the ice beginning to melt almost instantly. "Least I can do something." The sound of crunching snow makes Cherry lift her head up.
"Guys, look!" Daniel exclaims. The teens followed his line of sight, spotting a kid dressed like a superhero running across his backyard toward his treehouse. He climbs up steps, only for one to break, making him fall. The teens watch in fear until he begins to float just before hitting the ground. Sean glares at his brother while Cherry just shakes her head tiredly. Daniel walks over to the fence, the teens lingering for a moment before following him.
"Hey," the kid says, face covered in confusion and awe. "Um... did you see that?"
"See what?" Sean lies. "We just got here. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I didn't see anything either," Daniel adds. Cherry just shakes her head no.
"Oh." The sadness is evident in his voice. "I just fell down... into the snow. My dad says I'm kind of clumsy."
"That's an awesome costume," Daniel says, sidestepping the topic. "Who's your favorite? I love Power Bear!"
"Power Bear!" the two exclaim at the same time. "Oh man, I have the Mega Power Bear! You should check it out!"
"I've got the chibi Power Bear, the talking one! I need to show you it!"
"Chris!" All four look over, spotting a man speed-walking over to the kid. His movements are sloshy, making Cherry raise a brow. He kneels in the snow, placing his hands on Chris' shoulders. "Look, I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"
"Dad, I'm fine. I promise!"
"Are you sure? Listen, I shouldn't have-" his words halt immediately, finally noticing he has an audience. He stands up immediately, placing an arm around Chris. "Do you know them?"
"It's okay, Dad. They're cool! He loves superheroes. Even Power Bear!" Chris grins excitedly, Daniel responding with a smile of his own.
"Ah, gotcha. Hi," he says, waving his hand at the three. "Are you staying with the Reynolds?"
"Uh... yeah. They're our grandparents," Sean answers, but the guy doesn't really seem to acknowledge it much.
"Oh god, Chris. You don't have any damn shoes on. I'm sorry, buddy. Let's get you inside."
"Yeah. Okay, Dad," Chris sighs.
"Thanks guys." He and Chris turn to leave, only for him to pause and turn back. "Oh, and if Claire asks, tell her everything is fine." Cherry's mouth moves before her brain does.
"Is it really?" she questions, the attitude in her voice evident.
"Nevermind. See you around." He kneels in the snow once more, allowing Chris to climb on his back before they're off to their house, Chris giving them a wave goodbye. There are a few beats of silence before Sean speaks.
"Daniel! Did you forget everything about the rules already?" Cherry lets out a tired sigh, deciding to let the two hash it out. She goes to thaw the lock once more, listening to them argue in the background.
"I'm sorry, Sean. Did you want me to let him fall?"
"No, you-" he cuts himself off with a sigh. He rubs his face tiredly. "You did the right thing. But we can't let anybody know. We have to keep a low profile out here."
"He's like my age. I bet you would have done the exact same thing. Don't be mad..." The lock has already been thawed out at this point, leaving Cherry to lean against the shed and listen to the boys.
"I'm not mad, dude. It's over, okay? Just remember we're hiding out. So no training or showing off your power. From now on, you stick with me and Cherry at all times. Okay?" Despite an annoyed sigh from his lips, Daniel nods his head in agreement. "Let's check out the shed, yeah?" He pushes his brother gently, getting a laugh out of him as they jog over to the shed, seeing the lock thawed out. He unlocks it, allowing Daniel to run in and look through all the items. Sean turns his attention to Cherry, who has that look on her face. "You okay?" She gives him a quick glance before looking at Daniel.
"I'm fine." A few moments pass before she expands on her feelings. "It's just a lot," she admits. Sean can see the tiredness in her eyes, feeling the exact same heaviness in himself. Despite it, the two place smiles on their face when Daniel looks at the two, finally finding a frisbee.
