• caring - verónica cares a lot about her friends and family, and she's usually considerate of other people.

backstory
• childhood ; when she was 3, she and her mom moved to LA so they could try to have a great life. her father had moved there just after she was born, making a life for them to come join him. he got lucky and got a really good job, finally getting their paperwork they needed a couple of years later and bringing them up with him. soon after, she was given a sister, selena, who she became really close with despite their near 5 year age difference. while her father spent the first few years of her life away from her, they grew very close up until he died in a car accident when she was 12. it was very devastating to her, but she powered through it and still worked hard in school and helping her mom to take care of her sister.
TRIGGER WARNING ; murder, violence, alcohol abuse, death
• teenage years ; after her dad died, she and her sister were left with their mom. she wasn't so bad, but she was hardly safe when it came to deciding who could come into their house. they'd see different guys all the time, and some of them were alright, but others were just creepy. finally their mom got a boyfriend that lasted more than a few weeks, but it turned into a night of horror. it was mid-august and her mom's boyfriend had killed her sister, brutally attacked her mom, and nearly left verónica in the same condition. he'd gotten to her, but not nearly as much as her mom, verónica only left with bruises and by now, a scar on her abdomen. her mom somehow made a full recovery, though selena didn't make it, making it one of the most devastating nights of her life. she always blamed her mom for it, even though deep down she knew it wasn't actually her fault. it really created a divide between them and now verónica hardly talks to her. she struggled a lot after everything, she started staying out late and drinking and having sex with whatever guy she could first get to sleep with her. that was never hard. when she had a pregnancy scare at 17, all of that stopped. she knew she had to get her life together. she never got therapy for any of it, but she finally does later on with jackson's encouragement.
• adulthood ; as soon as she turned 18, she used the money her dad left for her in what was basically a trust fund to put herself through culinary school. she went to a nice one, wanting to get as good of an education as she could get. cooking was her escape in her teenage years, especially once her sister died. then she moved to seattle for a fresh start, becoming a chef at a nearby restaurant, one that was pretty nice. everything went pretty smoothly for several years until the roof collapsed, but after many failed relationships, the situation turned out to be for the better since she met jackson. the only thing she still wanted in life was to open a restaurant of her own. since moving to seattle, she's visited méxico a few times to keep in touch with family that she didn't really know, but it was mostly her dad's side since he passed when she was so young and she wanted some piece of him. luckily communicating there was never an issue since her dad helped her continue to learn spanish, despite living in the states and not really "needing it", though it still was helpful sometimes

JACKSON AVERY
history ; she and jackson meet on valentine's day when she comes in as a victim of the restaurant roof collapse. she wasn't there on a date but rather as a chef, and she had just left the kitchen for a quick bathroom break when everything happened. luckily she wasn't hurt too badly, but she did have a small concussion and suffered a pretty bad cut on her arm, probably from glass from the lights on the ceiling. jackson being interested in working in plastics, fixed up her arm. they kind of hit it off and so she hoped to see him again, which she did bump into him again just a couple months later when her friend was in the hospital from a car accident. they talked a little and decided to go out, the rest was history
