โ€˜My mom will pick me up right
after school to go to the doctor's.
I won't be at practice.โ€™

Another day he'd miss practice and
it was slowly getting suspicious.

Even the coach had called him
already to ask if he actually still
wanted to play volleyball.

The team was really missing
their setter and brain but what
could they do?

If Kenma wasn't there,
it's not like they could
magically replace him.

โ€˜Okay, take care.
Call me later to tell me how
it went if you want.โ€™

Originally the blonde had been quite
against the idea of going to a doctor,
feeling that it was too rushed and not
sure if he was ready for that yet.

But his mother had insisted.

It was important to make sure the
pregnancy wasn't affecting Kenma's
health, also this way he could get
some medication for his strong
morning sickness.

And it was slowly time
to make a decision.

If he didn't want to keep the baby,
he shouldn't wait much longer or
the risk of complications occurring
would increase.

If he wanted to keep his child,
they needed to make sure the
little one was doing well.

His mother and father would
support him either way.

โ€œDr Sato is really kind,
you don't have to worry.
And it's just like a normal
check up, the worst he could
do is take a blood sample.โ€

But Kenma didn't answer as
he kept staring at his hands,
fingers playing with his
hoodie strings.

Again he was somewhat drowning
in Kuroo's hoodie that was way
too big for him but he liked it.

It was like he could hide in it
and it still had the faint smell of
his boyfriend lingering on it.

Even if part of him had wished for
Kuroo to tag along, he still knew
that it was better to have this first
appointment without him.

This way he could listen to his
own thoughts and feelings about

the situation without unintentionally
getting influenced by his boyfriend.

It was a new and emotional
situation that involved the
both of them after all.

Also his mother was still there to
comfort him and to take in all the
information rationally instead of
getting worked up about
the slightest thing.

Kenma wasn't sure if they'd
perform an ultrasound and if he'd
see the baby but he knew that
seeing them would most likely
make him break down again.

It'd be all too real.

โ€œKozume Kenma?โ€

A middle aged man in a white
coat entered the waiting room,
notepad in his hands and a
crooked smile on his face.

He didn't look as scary as Kenma
would have thought.

โ€œPlease follow me to
the examination room.โ€

The blonde and his mother
bowed slightly before they
trailed behind the doctor and
entered the room.

It was, as expected,
a rather normal examination
room with an examination table,
ultrasound device and a normal
desk with chairs and PC.

But Kenma couldn't help but
shudder at all the posters on the wall.

He couldn't imagine that there
was actually a small child inside his
tummy that'd grow just like the
baby on the poster.

But there was something that
caught his eyes when he let
his gaze wander around.

A row of three pictures,
photos taken of newborn babies
that had been edited so it looked
like the babies were sleeping
in flowers.

It looked cute.

โ€œHello, my name is doctor Sato Kaito.
I'll be doing the first examination
and confirmation of your
pregnancy today.
But before we start with that,
I'd like to ask you a few questions.โ€

Kenma nodded softly,
not trusting his voice nor was
he brave enough to look the
doctor in the eyes.

โ€œYou're still a minor, right?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œOkay. Since this is your
first appointment, your mother
needs to stay with us for today.
Are you comfortable with that?โ€

โ€œYeah, it's fine.โ€

The boy briefly looked up at
his mom who gave him
a reassuring smile.

โ€œYou noted 169cm for your
size and 52kg for your weight.
You're still a bit on the lighter side,
do you play any sports?โ€

โ€œMhm, volleyball.โ€

โ€œThen I guess you know how
important a well-balanced diet
is for your body to stay healthy?
Especially now it's even more
important to focus on meals that
provide your body with all the
important nutrients.
Have you been eating regular meals?โ€

โ€œHis morning sickness
is pretty strong. I've been

trying to cook things that
won't upset his stomach but
many things make him nauseous.โ€

Mrs Kozume kindly answered
for her son when it seemed like
Kenma wouldn't start explaining
his symptoms any time soon.

She understood that it was a
stressful situation for him but
this was his chance to get some
medication that'll hopefully
make him feel better.

โ€œAlright, I'll prescribe you
something against the nausea then.
Any allergies I should know about?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œHow about any other symptoms?
Is there anything else beside the
nausea that gives you a hard time?โ€

Well, the whole fact that there
was a child chilling in his tummy
but Kenma wouldn't say that.

โ€œI'm sensitive to strong smells..
and get headaches or dizziness
from smelling them.โ€

โ€œHm.. That's nothing unusual
but sadly I don't have any
medication to help with that.
I do recommend carrying small
refreshing towels with a citrus
scent you're comfortable with.
The citrus scent should overpower
the unpleasant smells and keep
your senses busy so that you
shouldn't get dizzy.
Citrus scents also help with nausea.
But of course dizziness can also
always come from slight
dehydration or overwork. So..
Drink enough and take breaks too.
Your body is currently facing
a big challenge.โ€

Kenma nodded softly as he
played with his sweater paws.

โ€œOkay. Before we proceed with
the ultrasound, I'd like to ask
you another question.
I have to ask this one since
you're a minor.

Did you feel forced to have
sexual intercourse?โ€

The pudding head tensed at
the sudden question but not
because it was true.

He just hadn't expected such
a question nor to talk about
that in front of his mother.

It wasn't like she didn't know he
and Kuroo had slept together,
he was obviously pregnant after all.

But it still made him so unbelievably
uncomfortable to talk about that
while his mother sat right beside him.

โ€œN-no, he's uh..
He's my boyfriend.
And he's very nice.โ€

โ€œOkay, that's good.
I'm always glad to hear that.
So, ready to check on that little bean?โ€

Kenma doubted that he was ready
but when would he ever actually be?

โ€œPlease raise your hoodie a bit for me.
I'll put this blue gel on your stomach
so my transducer can work better,
it might be a little cold though.โ€

Dr Sato explained as he tucked a
paper towel in the boy's waistband
so the blue gel wouldn't dirty
Kenma's pants.

โ€œAlright.
You're already starting to show
a tiny bit when lying down, huh?

Makes it easier for me to
look for the little one.โ€

The blonde looked at his mother
who sat beside him but his mom's
gaze was completely fixed on the
monitor that was currently showing
blurry shapes of black and white
since Dr Sato was still trying
to find the actual fetus.

โ€œAh, there it is!
A tiny human bean.โ€

The doctor pointed at the literal
bean-shaped mini human on the
monitor that was chilling
in a black circle.

โ€œThe round, black shape
is the amniotic sac. It's black
because liquids look black in the
ultrasound and the sac is filled
with amniotic fluid which functions
as a safety cushion and keeps the
baby all nice and warm.
And the baby..
I'd say you're around ten
weeks pregnant. Does that fit
your calculation?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Kenma nodded but just like
his mother, he couldn't tear his
gaze from the monitor.

Sure, it was extremely
overwhelming to think about
the fact that what he was currently
seeing was happening inside
his tummy.

But he also caught himself thinking
that the tiny bean looked kinda cute.

The baby's limbs were so tiny
compared to the head and it actually
had very few facial features already.

Kenma didn't know what he had
expected, probably nothing at all,
but he hadn't guessed that the
baby already had a nose.

At least it looked like it.

โ€œThe baby has a good size,
little one's actually a bit on the
bigger side already but that's
nothing to worry about.
Would you like to have a
print of the ultrasound?โ€

Kenma didn't.

But he did.

He really wanted to show Kuroo
for whatever reason he didn't
dare to question for mental
health safety reasons.

โ€œAlright. There you go.
Here are some informational
flyers as well to help you make
a decision about what to do now.
You can always call me or send
me an email if you have any
questions about the flyers.
Let me know when you have
decided so we can schedule an
appointment for whatever next
step you'll want to take.
Until then please take care of
yourself and don't forget to pick
up the prescription at the counter.โ€

But Kenma couldn't even answer.

Maybe it seemed rude but he
was simply too busy staring at the
sonogram of the mini human bean
the moment he held the photo
in his hands.
