Chapter Fifty-Seven

"It's not just that she could still be alive-" Wren said as she, Stiles, Lydia and Stilinski walked into his office, "It's that she would've had to fake her death." Lydia finished making Stilinski Stilinski raise his eyebrows at them. "Your grandmother, Lorraine Martin, faked her death?" Stilinski asked and the three of them nodded.
"Definitely."
"Maybe."
"Something like that."
"Oh, I'm guessing you got a story to back this up?" Stilinski sighed, "She might be helping the Benefactor..." Lydia trailed off and Wren nodded. "Or is the Benefactor..." She said making Stilinski nod, "That sounds like a story worth hearing." He said then shut the door but opened it after a few minutes of talking.
"Anybody seen Parrish?" He asked, glancing around, "Haigh?" He asked making Haigh look up slightly wide eyed. 'Haven't seen him." He said, shaking his head before Stilinski nodded and shut the door.
Lydia was about to say something but Wren glanced out the window of the office and her eyes widen. "Oh my god." She mumbled making everyone follow her gaze to see Parrish, covered head to toe in black smudges, charge at Haigh making Haigh shot a couple times. "Hey! HEY!" Stilinski yelled rushing out of the office with his gun drawn.
Parrish punched Haigh causing him to accidentally pull the trigger, shooting Stilinski in the shoulder making Lydia scream. Both Wren and Stiles rushed over to Stilinski before glancing over at Parrish.
He was on top of Haigh as he kept punching him over and over before slowly stopping and sitting up breathing heavily.

"He covered you in gasoline?" Derek asked as he looked at Parrish's hands with a conflicted look, "It's the hair and nails, isn't it? The parts of the body that are essentially dead." Lydia said as she stood on the other side of Parrish. "They should be gone." Derek said and Parrish looked at him crazy, "I was set on fire! All of me should be gone."
"Not if you're like us." Scott said making Parrish look at him confused, "Like you?" He asked. "I don't think he's like us." Derek said shaking his head and Wren sighed, "Then what is he?" She asked looking over at Derek who shrugged and shook his heads, "Sorry, but I have no idea."
"But you knew about Jackson and Kira." Scott said and Derek sighed, "This is a little out of my experience. There might be something in the bestiary- did you try Argent?" Derek said and Scott sighed and shook his head, "I don't know where he is."
"Okay, hold on- what's a bestiary Actually, that's not even my first question. Just... Just tell me one thing. Are all of you like Lydia?" Parrish asked making them look at him confused, "Are you all psychic?" Parrish asked making Derek look at him crazy while Wren chuckled quietly as she glanced over at her sister.
"Not exactly."
"Okay then what are you?" He asked and they all looked at Scott and nodded. He closed his eyes for a moment before opening them to reveal his ruby-red eyes.
๐ฐ
"What's a Kanima?" Parrish asked sitting on the couch making Wren chuckle and look at Scott. "We'll get back to that. Just know that everyone like us- everyone with some kind of supernatural ability, is on the Deadpool." Scott explained, while sitting down on the arm of the couch.
"But I don't even know what I am." Parrish said and Wren sighed, "Yeah, they don't care about that. I'm one of top three and I've only just now figured out what I am." Wren said making Parrish glance over at her. "How many professional assassins are we talking about?" Parrish asked and Lydia sighed, "We're starting to lose count." She said.
"But is it still just professionals?" Scott asked and Parrish slightly shook his head, "I don't think Haigh's ever tried anything like this. I think he was taking a chance." Parrish said looking at each of them making Wren sigh and run a hand through her hair. "That means anyone with the Deadpool could take a chance." She said glancing at all of them.
"But if Haigh had it, then who else does? How easy is it to get this thing now?"
๐ฐ
"Meredith was only at our grandmother's lakehouse once... But I think once was enough." Lydia said as she sat down next to Wren on the bed. "How did your grandmother know her?" Derek asked and Lydia looked at him and shook her head.
"She didn't. She found her. Because of another woman named Maddy." Lydia said as Wren pulled out a picture of two women, "The woman she loved." Wren said standing up to hand the picture to Scott. "We never met her, but we used to see her name everywhere. She used to be part of a yacht racing team. There were plaques and trophies in the lake house from all the regattas she'd won." Wren said.
"How did she die?" Parrish asked.
"How's not the story... It's what happened right before. Our grandmother, Lorraine, used to work in San Francisco for IBM." She explained then started to walk back and forth. "She was there on a weekend, catching up on work. She started hearing this sound, like rain. But, when she looked out the windows. All she saw was blue sky." Wren said.
"But she kept hearing the rain?" Scott asked and Lydia nodded slightly, "And it just kept getting louder. Rain and thunder, cracking like gunshots in her head... so loud, she finally just... screamed."
"Like a Banshee." Wren said and Lydia nodded in agreement, "She called Maddy, who was planning on taking one of the boats out on the lake... But Maddy said that the sun was shining there, too... So, Lorraine didn't say anything."
"There was an accident?" Parrish asked.
"It took them four days to find Maddy's body... and then it took decades to figure out how Lorraine knew. She started with parapsychologists- like the Ph.D in their name made it more scientific. They built the study in the lake house according to every pseudoscientific theory they could find. None of it worked. So then, she started going to more extreme occult- things like mediums and psychics, all of them failures... Until she found Meredith. They found her in Eichen House... this fragile girl who didn't understand the things she heard. They brought her to the study... and they almost killed her. She was hospitalized for over a year. She... never really recovered." Wren explained.
"My grandmother drove her insane. I drove her to suicide. And all she ever wanted to do was help. My grandmother created the code for the Deadpool. They think she's the Banshee who put the names out in the first place. She left me this message in the same code." Lydia said sliding over a piece of paper.
"But she didn't leave a cipher key, did she?" Scott asked and Lydia sighed and shook her head.
๐ฐ
"Try "Maddy." It's got to be Maddy." Stiles said as he stood behind Wren and Lydia who sat at his desk. "Doesn't "Maddy" feel a little obvious as a cipher key?" Wren asked and Stiles shook his head, "I guarantee it's "Maddy." He said and Lydia sighed before typing in MADDY. She pressed enter and all that came up was "Error" making Stiles pursed his lips.
"Okay, your name. She left the code for you, right? So, it's got to be your name." Stiles said and Lydia started typing in her name. Error. "Wren's name?" Stiles asked and Lydia typed her sister's name only for it to come up as Error. "Your mom's name?" Stiles asked and Lydia typed in Natalie's which also came up as error.
"Do you have any beloved family pets?" Stiles asked making Lydia pinch the bridge of her nose while Wren leaned her head on the back of the chair and sighed. "The ashes were left for you. The code was left for you. You're supposed to be able to figure this out." Stiles said making Lydia sigh.
"But no one else is... which is why she made it hard." Lydia said and Wren squinted in annoyance as Stiles's printer beeped for the hundredth time. "Stiles, I'm gonna stab your printer in about two seconds." She said making Stiles instantly walk over and grab a stack of paper, shoving it into the printer.
Wren stared at the computer for a minute before realizing something, "You... No one else. No one else but you..." She trailed off making Lydia look at her confused, "What?" She asked making Wren sit up a bit. "Our guesses- they're all about grandma, right? We keep trying to guess a word that has something to do with her. So, maybe we should be trying to guess one that's about you. She left it for you because she knew you'd be a Banshee." She said and Stiles caught on to what she was saying.
"Me? What about me?"
"What do you remember doing with your grandmother? You know, what was you guys', like, special thing? Did you go to the beach? You know, did you like ice cream, or...?" Stiles trailed off and Lydia pursed her lips, "The three of us read." She said and Stiles nodded. "Okay. What did you read?"
"The Little Mermaid." Lydia said and Stiles furrowed his brows, "You read that movie?" He asked and Wren glanced at her. "It was a book first! Hans Christian Andersen." She said and Stiles nodded slightly, "Type it in Little Mermaid." Stiles said and Lydia sighed before typing it in.
ERROR.
She tried "Mermaid" next but that also came up as ERROR. "We read it every night. I got so obsessed with it, for three months Wren wouldnt responded to anything but 'Arista' and I wouldn't respond to anything but 'Ariel'. It drove our parents crazy, but ...Grandma thought it was adorable." Lydia said then started trying in "Ariel."
She pressed enter and names started popping up. But none of them had numbers next to them like the other lists. "You recognize any of these?" Stiles asked and Lydia shook her head, "Just our grandmother." She said.
Stiles looked over at his printer which had been printing thing and pull out one of the papers. "Guys? We need to call Scott." Stiles said and handed Wren the paper. She looked it over and furrowed her brows, it was the deadpool but it was different. Liam was now worth eighteen million instead of three, but that wasn't it. Derek wasn't on the list anymore.
๐ฐ
"Well, it's not another Deadpool- more like an Already-Dead-pool." Parrish said as Wren, Lydia and Stiles looked over his shoulders at the laptop. "All of them? All dead?" Wren asked and Parrish nodded. "Within the last ten years. All suicides, and all at the same place-" Parrish said and Stiles sighed, "Eichen House."
"Lydia, Eichen House isn't a library. You need a warrant to get files from there." Stiles said and Lydia sighed, "Pur grandmother left me a list of ten suicides, including her own. There's got to be a reason why. Is there anyone there who's willing to help us?" She asked and realization crossed over Stiles's face.
"No... But there might be someone willing to take a bribe..."
๐ฐ
"A thousand." Brunski said making them scoff, "A thousand dollars? To use one little key to open one little file room? Are you out of your mind?" Stiles asked looking at Brunski crazy and he just smirked. "When you get the keys, you make the price."
"Right. You actually think we have that kind of money?" Stiles asked and Brunski shook his head slightly, "I know you don't- if you did, Daddy Sheriff would have paid the bill by now. That's why I'm talking to them." He said looking over at Wren and Lydia.
Wren and Lydia glanced at each other before pulling out their wallets and pulled out some money. "I have five hundred." Lydia said, "I got two hundred." Wren said before they both dropped the money onto the desk.
Brunski smiled and leaned back to pull out a mix tape before flipping it around and putting it back into the player making them look at him weird. He turned back around, grabbing the money, giving it a quick sniff before grabbing the keys, "Follow me."
Brunski lead them to the records room as Wren had a protective hold on Lydia's arm. "Good?" He asked and Stiles nodded, "Yeah. We can help ourselves." He said and Brunski smirked before standing at the door way.
"Uh, Lydia, you got the list?" Stiles asked as he kept an eye on Brunski while Lydia pulled the list out. "Lydia, why did you write two more names on here?" Stiles asked making Lydia look at him confused, "I didn't write anything..."
"This is your handwriting."
"Why would I write another name?"
"Why would you write ours?" Stiles asked handing Lydia the paper to show she had written Wren's and Stiles's name. "It was the tapes, wasn't it?" Brunski asked making the spin around, the second he did he grabbed Wren's arm, pressing a taser to her side making her groan and fall to the ground while Lydia screamed.
Stiles went to grab her but Brunski pressed a taser to his chest making him fall to the ground next to Wren. Brunski laughed sinisterly, cracking his next before turning to Lydia, "Your turn, sweetheart."
๐ฐ
Wren groaned as Lydia screamed for help. The three of them had been restrained to one of the metal beams in the middle of the room. "Lydia, there's a lot of people screaming for help in a place like this. I don't think anyone's listening." Stiles said.
"Well, I'm open to better ideas... Because, if you didn't notice, all of those suicides were murders." Lydia said and Wren sighed, leaning her head back against the beam. "That's why she left you the message..."
"She predicted her own death. She knew I'd figure it out-"
"Once you were able to predict your own." Brunski cut her off as he walked back into the room making Wren try to pull against her restraints. "But they weren't murders. I'm not some serial killer like Ted Bundy, going around cutting up college girls." Brunski said, crouching down in front of Lydia.
"No, you're just an Angel of Death."
"I don't think you understand my level of commitment to my work here, Stiles. There are people here who don't simply need treatment- they need release. I helped them. I helped Lorraine." Brunski said making Wren and Lydia grab each other's hands the best they could, "You killed her." Wren said as her and Lydia's fingers wrapped around each other.
"I helped her. And now, you can help me... Because there is something about it that's always bothered me." Brunski said before holding out a tape that had "Lorraine Martin" written on it.
"What are you...? Brunski, what are you doing?"
"Don't worry, Lorraine... It's going to be all right... You're just going to have a little trouble breathing..."
"Hey. Wren, Lydia, don't listen." Stiles said softly making Wren turn her head towards him, "Okay? Don't listen to it. Just focus on my voice. Don't listen to it- block it out. Okay? You can do it." Stiles said as Wren slightly pulled on her restraints. "Hey, turn it off!" Stiles yelled and Brunski gritted his teeth before punching Stiles.
"Stiles!" Wren yelled worriedly while Brunski grabbed Lydia's face, "Then listen... Just listen. I need your help with this, girls."
"Please, don't..."
"Here it is- the part I never understood. Listen."
"Please... don't hurt them..."
"Don't hurt who?"
"Ariel and Arista..."
Lydia gripped onto Wren's fingers as a tear ran down both of their faces before Brunski stood up, grabbing something off the shelf. "We get a lot of teenagers trying to break into our drug cabinets..." He said making them look over at him. "Most of the time, they don't succeed... But you three look pretty clever to me." He said as the three of them tried to fight against their restraints as he stuck a syringe into a bottle.
"I'll admit, Stiles... I don't have any unusual talents like Lydia or Wren. But somehow, I just knew we were gonna get a chance to do this again." Brunski said and started going towards Stiles with the needle before suddenly moving over to Lydia instead.
"No!" Wren yelled as she forcefully kicked Brunski's shin making him groan and drop the syringe. He chuckle as he picked up the syringe again and turned to Wren, "Well aren't you brave sticking up for your adoptive sister." He said before roughly grabbing her face making her wince slightly as both Stiles and Lydia yell out.
"But thank you for volunteering." He said, holding the syringe up making struggle against him but he just chuckled before quickly stuck the needle into her neck making her wince.
"Drop it!" Parrish suddenly yelled, pointing a gun at Brunski, "Take your thumb off that needle and slowly withdraw it from her neck." Parrish demanded and Brunski slowly turned to him. "Young deputy... You're just a kid. I bet you've never even fired a-" Brunski started to say but was cut off by Parrish shooting him making the syringe fall from Wren's neck.
Instantly, Parrish went over and started getting the three out if their restraints. "He-He killed ourngrandmother. He was controlling Meredith."
"He used her to create the Deadpool-"
"And killed her when she tried to help us." Wren said as Stiles helped her up, checking her over. Suddenly, Brunski coughed up blood and laughed, "You think it was me? That I was controlling her? Idiots... She was controlling me." He choked out making realization cross over Lydia's features. "Oh, God... It's not him. He's not the Benefactor."
"No." Someone said making them look over to see Meredith walk into the room, "And... he wasn't on my list. But he was a bad person."
