jake and papa weren't there; jake had said he didn't know coogie and needed to help reg with something. papa was busy helping his mom. so it was just her and kevin, side by side, both carrying that same terrible memory of seeing coogie go down in front of them.

they'd been frozen, watching the horror unfold, saying nothing because they thought that ronnie would kill them next if they spoke.

kevin leaned closer, his voice barely a whisper. "sani, this don't even feel real, seeing him like that..." he paused, staring down at his hands. "it's like, i keep seein' it in my head, over and over."

kasani glanced over, seeing the strain in his face. he was holding it together for her, just like she was for him. "i know... it's like he's here, but he's gone. i just... can't believe it."

the church grew quiet as bradon stepped up to the microphone. he cleared his throat, eyes red but focused as he began to speak. "coogie.. coogie was more than a kid from the block. he was someone who saw the good in everybody. he had a way of makin' you feel like family, even if you weren't. i know some of y'all feel like you lost a brother, even if you weren't blood. that's just who he was. even though me and him were half siblings and had different fathers ,i still loved him like we were full siblings."

bradon's gaze shifted to kasani, his face softening. "i know coogie had people close to him, people who meant a lot. kasani, you wanna say a few words?"

kasani froze, glancing at kevin. he gave her a nod, his hand slipping into hers. "you got this, sani. i'm right here."

she took a deep breath, rising on unsteady legs and stepping up to the mic. staring down at coogie's casket, she felt tears brimming. "coogie was like... a big brother to me" she started, her voice shaky. "he looked out for me, made me laugh. he wasn't just a friend. he was family. i'll never forget him. ill never forget that smile he had everytime he saw me"

her voice broke, and she quickly looked away, stumbling back to her seat. kevin wrapped an arm around her as she sat down, pulling her close. "it's okay, sani. i got you," he whispered, his voice warm and steady, his hand rubbing gentle circles on her back.

later, at the repast, kasani and kevin sat in a corner together, picking at their food in silence. every now and then, someone would stop by to share memories of coogie or offer quiet condolences. kevin stayed by kasani's side, his presence steady, like an anchor. he knew she was hurting, and though he didn't know what to say, he wanted to be there for her.

bradon came over, placing a hand on kasani's shoulder. "you did good up there, k" he said softly. "coogie would be proud of you."

kasani managed a small, grateful nod. "thank you, bradon... i didnt even know what to say it all just came to my mind when i stepped up to the mic"

bradon glanced at kevin, nodding in quiet respect. "thanks for being here with her" he said. "it's good to know she's got someone looking out."

kevin nodded, his hand resting on kasani's arm. "she know i always got her." he said simply, his voice firm.

a little while later, coogie's mom came over, her face weary but kind. she wrapped kasani in a tight hug, and kasani felt fresh tears prick at her eyes.

"thank you for being there for him" coogie's mom whispered. "he always talked about you like family, like a sister he would always beg me for."she chucked at the memory of coogie begging for a sister

kasani smilled."he was family," kasani managed, her voice thick.

as coogie's mom moved on, kevin pulled kasani close again, his arm a comforting weight around her shoulders. they sat together in silence, each carrying the memory of what they'd seen and the loss they now shared.

"ma, you actin' like you did something for him, but where were you, huh? coogie was out here on his own, and you just... you left him. don't try to act like you had his back now."

his mom shot him a sharp look, her voice getting tight. "don't you put that on me, brandon. i shoulda never left him with you. thought you was ready, actin' all grown. but maybe if you wasn't trying to play house, things wouldn't have gone down like this."

brandon's hands bawled into fists, and his eyes were getting watery again, even though he kept trying to hold it in. jerrika stepped in, wrapping her arm around him and gently pulling him back. "brandon, come on, babe, let's slide. it ain't worth it."

his mom looked at jerrika, her face twisted in anger and pain. "and youโ€”where were you? just standing there while he needed more than what you gave him."

brandon jerked forward, putting himself between them. "ma, don't bring jerrika into this. she ain't got nothing' to do with it, so back up off her."

jerrika kept her hand on brandon's shoulder, her voice calm but firm. "miss we all are hurting right now, all of us. coogie meant a lot to everybody, so let's not do this, alright?"

brandon's mom's face softened just a little, but she looked away, lips pressed tight, like she was trying to keep it together herself. jerrika whispered to brandon, "come on, let's dip. you don't gotta do this here."

after a pause, brandon let her guide him out, his shoulders slumped. he leaned on jerrika as they walked out, the weight of everything too much. once they got in the car, jerrika held his hand, rubbing his knuckles with her thumb as he let out the tears he'd been holding back.

on the ride home, she kept whispering to him, calming him down until he finally felt a little steady again. by the time they got back, he was drained but grateful she was there, helping him hold it together as they went inside, letting the quiet take over.

๐š๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐œ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐ž'๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ, kasani just couldn't bring herself to go home. the weight of it all was too much, and kevin must've sensed it because he didn't ask any questions, just walked her back to his place. his mom gave her a nod and let them have the living room to themselves, understanding in her eyes.

they sat down, and the silence settled, thick and heavy, before kevin broke it. "yo, kas... you think that dudeโ€”the one who..." he trailed off, not wanting to say it. "you think he knows we saw him?"

kasani froze, her mind flashing back to that awful moment, seeing the man with the gun. "i dunno, kev," she whispered, her voice shaking. "but... he looked right at me. i don't think i'll ever forget his face."

kevin nodded slowly, swallowing hard. "same here. i feel like any minute, he could come around the corner... like he knows we're out here, and he's just waiting for us to slip up."

they both fell silent, lost in the shared terror. neither had spoken to anyone else except for jake and papa of course. they were the only two who'd seen it all, and the fear was like a shadow following them everywhere.

kevin glanced over at her, his eyes soft with that worry she'd started to recognize. "you okay?" he asked quietly.

she shook her head, giving a half-hearted laugh. "i dunno... i don't think i know what 'okay' even feels like anymore."

the words tumbled out, and her voice sounded smaller than she'd meant it to. she clenched her hands, feeling the weight of everything settle over her.

"yeah, me too," kevin replied, his voice low. "but... i'm glad you're here, sani. like... at least we don't gotta feel all this by ourselves."

the way he said it, simple but real, sent a small wave of warmth through her. "thanks, kev. for being right there when i needed someone." she murmured, her gaze falling to her hands. she couldn't explain it, but just being here with him made the heaviness feel a little lighter.

kevin leaned in a bit, his shoulder brushing hers, close enough for her to feel his warmth. "you don't gotta thank me. we got each other, right?"

his words hung in the air, stirring something inside her she hadn't expected.

she looked up at him, their eyes meeting, and suddenly, the distance between them felt smaller than ever. her heart started to beat a little faster, and before she could stop herself, she leaned in just a little closer.

kevin's eyes softened, and she saw him do the same. she felt her heart pounding, but for once, it wasn't out of fear or sadness it was something else, something that left her breathless.

and then, without another thought, she closed the gap, her lips finding his in a gentle, unexpected kiss. it was soft, slow, almost like they were both testing the waters, but it sent a spark through her that made everything else fade away. for a moment, all the pain, the sadnessโ€”it was just them.

when they finally pulled back, kevin's eyes were wide, a quiet smile tugging at his lips. neither of them spoke, but the look they shared said it all. in that moment, they both knew something had changed between them, something they couldn't ignore.
