his stomach twisted. he gripped the lock, shaking it in frustration. "damn it, coogie..."

the store door swung open, and a familiar voice broke through the quiet.

"man, that's how you leave 'em speechless. always got somethin' fire to sell." a dude said talking to the owner of the store

brandon glanced up to see a dude stepping out with a fresh pair of sneakers in a box tucked under his arm. the guy looked youngโ€”maybe seventeenโ€”but walked like he owned the block.

the guy stopped when he spotted brandon. he squinted, then pointed. "yo, ain't you coogie's brother?"

brandon froze. his grip on the bike tightened. "yeah. who's askin'?"

"emmett," he said, adjusting the box under his arm. "coogie bought some kicks off me not too long ago. lil dude was wild, but cool as hell."

brandon's jaw clenched. "yeah... he was."

emmett's face fell, catching the weight in brandon's tone. "wait. something happen to him?"

brandon looked away, his voice low. "he's gone."

emmett stood there for a moment, his usual swagger fading. "damn, man... i'm sorry. coogie was a good dude. "

brandon nodded, not trusting himself to say much more.

emmett stepped closer, looking at the bike. "this his?"

"yeah. trying to get it unchained, but this lock won't budge."

emmett reached into his pocket, pulling out a multitool. "lemme see. i'm good with these."

brandon stepped back, watching as emmett got to work.

"you said he bought shoes from you?" brandon asked after a moment.

emmett nodded, not looking up. "yeah. coogie came to me last month. said he was savin' up for some heat. sold him a pair of jordans for the low.."

brandon couldn't help but smirk faintly. "sounds like him."

"yeah, man. we chopped it up for a while. he said you were always on his ass about stayin' outta trouble."

brandon huffed, shaking his head. "he never listened."

"nah, he listened. he just had his own way of doin' things," emmett said, popping the lock loose.

he stood up, handing the bike over. "there. you good."

brandon took it, staring at the bike for a second before looking back at emmett. "thanks."

"don't mention it," emmett said, stepping back. "but, uh... if you ever need anything, hit me up. coogie was good people. you his brother, so you good too."

brandon nodded, gripping the bike tighter. "appreciate it."

emmett started walking away but paused. "oh, and tell your fam... i'm real sorry for your loss."

brandon watched him disappear down the block, the words sticking with him. he looked down at the bike, his chest heavy.

"i'm tryna keep it together for you, coogie," he muttered under his breath, gripping the handlebars. "but it ain't easy."

with a deep breath, he started down the street, the weight of the bike feeling a lot heavier than it should.

"this feel... weird to you?" kevin finally asked, breaking the silence.

kasani raised an eyebrow, her voice tinged with sarcasm. "you mean kissing my best friend? nah, feels totally normal."

kevin let out a small laugh, shaking his head. "nah, i'm serious, kasani. i wasn't expectin' that."

"me neither," she admitted, her gaze dropping to the floor.

"but... i ain't mad about it," kevin added quickly, his voice softer.

kasani looked up at him, her expression unreadable. "what you tryna say, kev?"

"i don't know," he shrugged, avoiding her eyes. "i just... i care about you, you know? always have. but this... this different."

before kasani could respond, her phone buzzed on the bed. she grabbed it and frowned at the screen.

"what is it?" kevin asked, noticing her change in demeanor.

she hesitated before holding it up. it was a picture of them from earlier that day, sitting close on her bed, laughing about something. the caption read: "besties? or somethin' more?"

kevin's face darkened as he leaned in to look. "yo, who posted that?"

kasani quickly checked the account. it was someone from school, a nosy classmate who always had a knack for stirring up drama.

"you gotta be kidding me," kasani muttered, throwing the phone down.

kevin groaned, running a hand over his face. "man, this gon' spread like wildfire."

"no one even supposed to know you was here," kasani said, her voice tight.

kevin stood up, pacing the small room. "what you wanna do? ignore it?"

kasani shook her head, her jaw tightening. "nah. i'm not about to let nobody play with my name. they wanna know what's up? i'll tell 'em."

kevin stopped pacing and turned to her, his voice cautious. "you sure? this could get messy."

kasani smirked, her confidence returning. "messy? please. they don't know who they messing with."

but even as she said it, her heart raced. because deep down, she knew this was the start of something she couldn't control.

kevin sighed, glancing at kasani as she tapped furiously on her phone. "aight, just don't go too crazy with it. you know how these people love drama."

kasani smirked without looking up. "drama? boy, they live for it. let me give 'em a lil' show."

kevin shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "you wild."

"and you love it," kasani shot back, grabbing her hoodie off the chair. "yeah, yeah, whatever. i'm out, though. jake keeps blowing up my phone."

kevin paused, "you sure you good walking home by yourself?"

kasani waved him off. "ain't nobody messin' with me. reg got me if somethin' pop off."

kevin nodded, watching her head toward the door.

"thanks for today, kev."

he furrowed his eyebrows "for what?"

"for being you," she said simply, her eyes softening for a moment.

kevin grinned. "same to you, kasani. hit me if you need anything."

"always," she said, her lips curving into a small smile.

as the door clicked shut behind him, kevin leaned back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. his heart still raced, his mind running circles around everything that happened.

and for the first time in a while, he didn't feel completely alone.

it,d been days of brandon pressing kevin about coogie's murder, and it was starting to feel like a lot. kevin had no idea how brandon even figured out to ask him, considering they didn't know each other like that. every day, it was the same thing: some variation of "yo, did you see anything?" or "are you sure you don't know nothing?" kevin always gave the same answer, brushing him off. but brandon wasn't letting it go.

on the fourth day, kevin's patience snapped.

he was chilling at home, trying to escape the weight of everything that happened, when there was a knock at the door. he opened it to see brandon standing there, looking determined. again.

"man, what now?" kevin sighed, leaning against the doorframe.

brandon's voice was steady but firm. "look, i'm not trying to bug you. i just need to know. you were there when my brother got shot, weren't you?"

kevin's stomach churned. he avoided eye contact, staring at a crack in the sidewalk instead. "why you care so much?"

brandon's jaw tightened. "cause that was my brother. coogie. i need to know who did it, and you can't keep acting like you don't know."

kevin hesitated, weighing his options. this dude was relentless, and kevin wasn't sure he could keep dodging him forever. "if i tell you... you gotta do something for me," he finally said, his voice low.

brandon's eyes narrowed. "like what?"

kevin stepped outside, closing the door behind him. "i want that bike right there." referring to coogie bike that was leaning on the gate

brandon blinked, surprised. "yeah, butโ€”"

"give it to me," kevin interrupted. "that's the trade. you want answers? i want that bike."

brandon stared at him for a long moment before nodding. "deal."

kevin exhaled sharply, running a hand over his face. he didn't want to do this, but he also wanted brandon to leave him alone. "aight. let's go."

he led brandon through the neighborhood, staying quiet most of the way. the streets felt heavier than usual, the memory of coogie's death pressing down on him. when they got close to the corner where ronnie usually hung out, kevin slowed his pace, glancing over his shoulder.

"he be over there," he said, nodding toward a group of older dudes sitting on crates and drinking. one of them, a scruffy guy with a faded hat, stood out. "that's him. the one with the hat."

brandon's jaw clenched as he stared at ronnie. "you sure?"

kevin nodded, his voice barely above a whisper. "yeah, i'm sure. that's the dude who shot your brother."

brandon's hands balled into fists at his sides, but he didn't move. kevin could feel the tension rolling off him and took a step back.

"aight, you got what you wanted," kevin said quickly.

brandon nodded, relieved this was finally over. but as he walked away, he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd just set something dangerous in motion. and judging by the look on brandon's face, this wasn't the end it was just the beginning.

๐ค๐š๐ฌ๐š๐ง๐ข,๐ฌ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  as she walked on the sidewalk of grant ave. she could hear the distant hum of the city, but something felt off. before she could process it, a car rolled up, and the engine cut. she barely had time to react when the door slammed open.

"yo, what you doing out here?" one of the guys sneered, stepping out. the others followed, blocking her path.

"what the hell?" kasani tried to back away, her hands instinctively reaching for her taser, but they were too quick.

"nah, we ain't gonna let you slide," another guy said, pulling out a gun and aiming it at her.

"what do you want?!" kasani shouted, her voice trembling, but she tried to hold her ground. she had been in worse situations before, but this felt different these guys were out for blood.

before she could react, one of them swung the barrel of the gun and pistol-whipped her across the face. the pain was immediate, and her vision blurred as she stumbled back, her hand instinctively reaching up to her face.

blood dripped from the cut on her cheek as she tried to stay upright, but they weren't done. they pushed her into a nearby metal gate, the cold bars scraping against her skin, leaving a deep gash on her arm.

"bitch, you think you tough?" one of them spat, and kasani tried to fight back, throwing punches, kicking, doing everything she could to break free. but there were too many of them, and they held her down, the weight of their bodies keeping her on the ground.

"stop! get the fuck off me!" kasani screamed, but they just laughed, clearly enjoying the power they had over her. she could feel her strength waning, the blood from the wound on her face starting to drip onto the pavement.

the leader of the group leaned down, his breath hot on her ear. "yo' brother should've stayed in his lane, now you gonna pay for his shit."

a wave of fear and anger surged through kasani. she managed to kick one of the guys off her, but it was too late the damage had already been done.

as they backed off, leaving her bloodied and bruised, kasani pulled herself to her feet, gritting her teeth against the pain. her mind was spinning, but she couldn't show weakness.

she had to get out of there. her hand found the taser in her pocket, but before she could react, the guys were already getting in their car, laughing like they had just won.

"this ain't over," one of them yelled out as they sped away, leaving kasani standing there, gasping for breath, her body aching.

her face was covered in blood, her arm throbbed, but she knew she had to get home. she couldn't stay out here any longer. through the pain, she took a few shaky steps forward, the sound of her footsteps echoing in the empty street.

as she limped home, the thoughts of kevin filled her head againโ€”the kiss, the connection but now, that was the least of her worries. she couldn't get caught slipping again. not after this.

and as she limped down the street, she made a vow to herself. no matter what, she wasn't going to let them break her.
