Today is the day. The day I would be attending my first soccer game. I was a little excited, I'll admit. After receiving Sofia's text, I slung myself out of my bed and dragged my feet to my closet. The only soccer shirt I had was a Spanish national team one. It would have to do until I got my hands on a real one.
I brushed my hair, pulled it into my signature high ponytail, and slicked it back. I pulled on the shirt, a pair of denim wash jean shorts and some white sneakers. I put on my favorite gold necklace and a matching pair of golden hoops. I applied a thin coat of makeup and a light spritz of perfume. Gucci to be exact.
When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I was greeted by Sofia. She was wearing her jersey and a cute pair of black athletic shorts. She was wearing sandals, and her toenails were painted royal blue.
"I'm so excited!" She squealed, jumping up and down like a little kid. I was happy to see her so enthused.
Our parents emerged from their chambers, both sporting matching Barcelona jersey. My mother had braided her hair, and my father had sunglasses perched on the top of his head.
"Ready to go?" My father asked.
"Sure am," Sofia exclaimed happily.
The game was set to start at 7 PM, and it was currently 10 AM. We had to leave early enough to get to the stadium. Barcelona was quite a drive from Madrid.
We hopped into the limo, me and Sofia taking our seats in the back. She took a couple of pictures out of the window, and I did as well. Something to add to my Instagram later this evening.
The drive was very slow. Tons of traffic littered the streets, and the driver kept cursing under his breath in Spanish.
By the time we left the city boundaries, it was nearly noon. It had taken forever. It was nearly a 7 hour drive to Barcelona, so we were already tight on time.
I think I took a nap, because when I woke up I felt groggy. Sofia was shaking me excitedly.
"We're here!" She shouted in my ear.
I cringed at her voice volume and turned my sleepy eyes to face the window. The bustling city of Barcelona greeted me. It was sure beautiful, with the Mediterranean Sea on one side of the land.
The closer we got into the city, the more traffic we were met with. A car passed us that had a Barcelona sticker on the back, and another one had words written in red and blue ink on the windows. A young girl was carrying an array of balloons on the sidewalk.
The stadium came into view soon after. A mob of people was gathered outside, waiting for the doors to open. We were still an hour early.
Our driver led us to a secure parking lot a block from the stadium, and our guards helped us out of the car when it was put in park. After the doors were shut and locked, Sofia turned to me.
"They're signing autographs before the game! Come on, Leonor," she pleaded, giving me sad eyes and sticking out her bottom lip.
"Fine," I spat, turning to my parents for confirmation. They nodded us off, and Sofia practically dragged me down the sidewalk in excitement.
Good thing I wore sneakers today. It was hot and sticky, plus a long walk to the entrance. The mob of people had entered by the time we arrived, so we were able to walk in with no wait at all. Several young girls recognized us and tried to shake our hands, but me and Sofia were in too much of a rush to notice at all.
The stadium was packed. Girls, boys, teens and adults were gathered everywhere. The players were all in a row, signing autographs near the tunnel. Sofia bolted down the steps, and I tried my best to keep up with her. She was pretty fast.
When we reached the players, she began to jump up and down. We still had to wait in line, of course. Many people asked for photos with us. I think I took more pictures there than in my entire life.
When it was our turn, Sofia hurried right up to the railing and bent down. Immediately, all of the guys gasped. Some of them even bowed their heads to her. I stepped up beside her, and they did the same.
"No need for that nonsense. We're here to have fun," I said, and the guys all softened a little. I caught Gavi's eye, the youngster. He was standing off to the side, watching Sofia and I oddly.
After she received autographs from all of her favorite players, including Felix, Gavi strutted over. I held out my marker to him and turned around so that my jersey was facing him. He signed it quickly and shoved the marker back into my hand without a word. No hey? No hello? Men.
"Enjoy the game," he grumbled, and turned away. The rest of the players retreated after jinx whispering. Probably about me and Sofia.
Soon after that, the game commenced. The first game of their season. Everyone cheered when the whistle blew. I tried my best to follow along. Our parents had joined us as well.
Felix took a shot at the net but missed by a foot. Sofia groaned and threw her head in her hands.
I'll admit, I enjoyed the game. It ended up being 2-0 to Barcelona. That Gavi kid had scored, along with some other youngster whom I had never heard of. Lamine something.
After the game ended, we made our way out of the stadium. We took more pictures with fans before finally leaving. The sky was dark, and stars littered the dusk. I checked my watch. 10 PM. Past my bedtime for sure.
Sofia showed me all of her pictures on the walk to the limo. She had probably taken 200 of them, mostly of Felix. Whatever.
I was exhausted when we reached the limo. I crawled in and collapsed in the back seat. Sofia did shortly afterwards, and soon her soft snoring filled the backseat. Great.
"Please bring us to the hotel, Mario," my father said, and the driver nodded immediately. Great, a hotel. I just wanted to be sleeping in my own bed.
With that thought, I began to drift off to sleep. I leaned my head against the window and closed my eyes slowly. The thoughts of the soccer game danced through my head like confetti. Maybe soccer wasn't so bad after all. I just had to give it a chance.
