WELCOME TO TNS

DECEMBER 22, 2024
Seoul, South Korea

"Mark Lee of NCT has officially decided not to renew his contract with SM Entertainment. What's next for Korea's most sought-after ace?"

"With Mark and Haechan's departure from NCT confirmed, fans anxiously await news about the future of the group and its remaining members."

"Where will Mark Lee go from here?"

Work.

Don't eatโ€”work harder.
Don't sleepโ€”work harder.

Don't cryโ€”work harder.
Don't be exhaustedโ€”just work harder.

For eleven years, these words had echoed in Mark Lee's mind, a mantra drilled into him by an industry that demanded more than what he had to give. It was his dream, onceโ€”a dream he had chased relentlessly since he was a child. But over time, that dream had begun to feel more like a weight than a passion, something he woke up dreading rather than embracing.

He loved his fans, of course. But the cost of that love? Being followed every time he stepped outside, feeling undervalued by a company that profited off his existence, the sinking disappointment of listening to yet another song he had no say in. The mental exhaustion had become unbearable.

When renewal day finally arrived, Mark found himself in a room full of SM executives, his lawyer at his side, his decision made. He had spent the past week discussing everything with his members, many of whom were also contemplating their futures. Some chose to stay, hoping to transition into acting or other ventures. But for Mark? Staying wasn't an option. Not anymore.

"I feel it's time for me to move on," he said firmly, his lawyer nodding in agreement. Silence filled the room, shock evident on every face around him.

The CEO barely hesitated before making his offer. "If you stay, we'll add a complimentary 1.3 billion KRW to your contractโ€”bringing your total to 50 billion KRW."

Mark scoffed. "Is that all I'm worth to you? A number? Over a decade of work, of dedication, of keeping this company relevantโ€”and this is the thanks I get?"

The CEO remained unfazed, exchanging whispers with the financial advisor before turning back to Mark. "What do we need to do to make you stay?"

For a moment, doubt flickered in Mark's mind. Maybe staying wouldn't be so bad? Maybeโ€”

"My client has made his decision," his lawyer interrupted, voice sharp. "Any further attempts to pressure him will not be tolerated."

Mark exhaled, breaking free from his hesitation. He smiled, mouthing a quiet thank you to his lawyer.

"You can't just leave like that," an executive pushed. "What about your fans? Your members?"

Mark hesitated before replying. "I'll stay for two more weeks. I want to finish the year with them. But come Januaryโ€”I'm done."

The CEO sighed, his expression unreadable as he tapped the table. "Fine. But don't come crawling back when no one else wants to sign you, Lee. Don't forget what we did for you."

And just like thatโ€”Mark Lee was free.

Free, like a breeze breaking through an open window.

Mark was free.

"Well, we did it."

Mark collapsed onto the couch of his new apartment, exhaustion settling into his bones. Across from him, Donghyuck let out a breathless laugh, wiping sweat from his forehead. They had spent the entire day moving in, and it was finally done.

"I appreciate it, man. Really," Mark said, looking over at his best friend.

Donghyuck nodded, taking a long sip of water before sighing contentedly. The room settled into a comfortable silence, one they had grown used to over the years. But this time, Mark hesitated before speaking again.

"I've been meaning to ask you something."

Donghyuck turned to him, curiosity in his gaze. "Yeah? What's up?"

Mark shifted nervously. "So, you know how I left the company... and now I need somewhere to manage my solo stuff, like brand deals and music?" He exhaled sharply. "I was thinkingโ€”maybe I should open my own company."

Donghyuck blinked. Then, after a long pauseโ€”he laughed. Loudly.

"That's it? You had me thinking something was seriously wrong!"

Mark chuckled, though he still looked slightly apprehensive. Donghyuck finally calmed down, pressing a pillow to his chest as he thought aloud. "Honestly, it's not a bad idea. Didn't Kang Daniel do the same thing? And Hyolyn?"

Mark nodded. "Yeah. And I was thinking... maybe you could do it with me. As co-founder."

Donghyuck furrowed his brows. "Me? Why me?"

Mark smiled. "Because there's no one else in the world I'd want by my side more than you."

Donghyuck rolled his eyes, but a small, genuine smile tugged at his lips. "Fine. But you better pay me. i'm not working for free."

"Deal."

"It's stunning."

Mark and Donghyuck walked through the halls of their new company building, taking in every detail. It wasn't massiveโ€”not yet. They had taken out a loan to cover the expenses, and while it wasn't the most luxurious space, it was enough.

There were practice rooms, recording studios, and even a small cafeteria. The building itself had quirksโ€”an odd color palette, an unconventional layoutโ€”but to them, it was perfect.

"I love this so much," Mark murmured, standing in front of the large window in their shared office, watching the city lights flicker below.

Donghyuck sat at his desk, leaning back in his chair. "Thank you for asking me to do this with you," he said after a moment.

Mark turned to him, a soft smile on his lips. "Anything for my best friend."

A comfortable silence settled between them before Mark clapped his hands together. "Alright, don't forgetโ€”interviews all week. Your attendance is mandatory."

Donghyuck groaned. "And after that?"

"You can take a break. I'll handle the rest."

Mark grabbed his bag and hoodie, ready to leave. "I gotta get home before Mungo starts plotting my downfall."

Donghyuck smirked. "Your cat is evil."

"And I love him for it."

Donghyuck stayed behind, staring out at the city. It still didn't feel real.

"See you in the morning, Hyuck."

"See you in the morning, Mr. CEO."
