snow danced in the light, a choreographed ballet conducted by the gentle wind. the newly clothed trees rose as white fairytale beings in that wintry landscape, for the grey clouds had bequeathed a bounty of snow.
minho was sprawled out on the couch, a mug of hot chocolate in between his palms, watching adorable and weirdly entertaining cat videos.
hyunjin on the other hand, had just finished his art commission, which took him a whooping 2 days and 12 hours and 35 seconds exactly. his patrons seemed to have a habit of submitting requests during winter, which was one of the only reasons why hyunjin had never experienced winter outside of his art studio.
however, today was different! for the first time in forever, the opportunity to play in the snow, and do all sorts of winter related activities arose. and hyunjin would be a certified fool if he was to let such an opportunity slip by.
after stretching his limbs, he proceeded to skip to Minho's room, a spring evident in his light steps.
" minho.... it's snowing! "
hyunjin announced, doing a little dance.
" okay? do you want me to feed you the snow? "
minho jokingly asked, his tone just as excited as hyunjin despite his earlier comment.
hyunjin gasped dramatically when he noticed minho being unbothered, turning his attention back to the mug of hot chocolate.
undefeated by his hyung's lack of attention and enthusiasm, hyunjin decided to take matters into his own hands. approaching minho, he quickly lunged himself onto the spacious couch, almost making the elder spill his hot beverage.
after the latter placed the hazardous cup onto the coffee table, the taller decided to grasp Minho's feet into his open arms, earning a questionable look from minho.
before minho could react even further, hyunjin bit gently on his sock covered feet, making minho laugh and point, whipping out his phone to capture such a golden moment.
" hahah! o-okay, what do you want hyunjin-ah? "
minho finally let his tough demeanour fade away upon some vigorous tickling done by hyunjin.
" hmm... i want to.. build a snowman, make snow angels, play hide and seek and stomp on you in the snow... "
hyunjin made sure to whisper the last part, to avoid going into the familiar air fryer too early.
" okay, go take your winter clothes or become one with the snow you love so much. "
minho pet hyunjin's hair before heading towards their shared closet, taking both his and the younger's winter wear despite what he had said. minho was very much like the snow, that could bring one both happiness and joy. although he might seem cold, he honestly just wanted to make hyunjin smile.
after putting on their clothes, they decided to head out.
" hyung! you're so short compared to me. "
minho shot him an icy cold glance, only making hyunjin erupt into another burst of continuous laughter. he had grown accustomed to the older's expressions and habits, he knew them like the back of his hand.
" you can wear my shoes instead hyung hahah. "
hyunjin dragged minho back into the house, helping minho take off the securely tied shoelace, before letting his hyung wear his shoes and vice versa.
hyunjin would be lying through his teeth if he said he didn't have difficulty trudging through the snow on a pair of elevated winter boots. however, it was a better alternative than letting his fun sized hyung struggle instead.
as promised, the pair got to work immediately, the snowman with twiggy arms aloft and a cheeky bubblegum grin, was the most wonderful of wintry ornaments. the pair stood proudly, admiring the snowman in front of them. as a substitute for a carrot nose, a poorly sculpted button nose made out of snow was used in its replacement. nonetheless, it was their creation, something they were proud of.
because perfection didn't always guarantee beauty.
whatever was pretty always his poison.
next on their list, was to make snow angels. hyunjin lightly pushed minho onto the fluffy bed of snow, his hyung laughing as a snowflake landed on his sculpted nose.
the pair spread their hands, going back and forth, creating an angel silhouette in the white snow. gradually, the wings of the angel became increasingly defined. hyunjin made sure to scoot over a little bit more, so that their snow angels were side by side.
" that's so cute hyunjinnie. "
minho praised, watching as hyunjin's cheeks heated up a little underneath the protection of the checkered scarf wrapped around his neck, hiding half his cheeks under the cloth.
" don't do that again... or i might just s-stomp on you! "
hyunjin tried to mimic the action of stomping, only to fail miserably due to the heavy boots. it was indeed physically demanding on the artist, finding it tiring to lift his foot and the addition weight on his foot up whenever he wanted to move. he almost tripped over the branch that was sneakily buried under the snow, only visible upon a closer look.
" you go hide okay hyunjin? I'll count.. 1 minute starts now! or I'll eat you if I find you ahha "
minho jokingly threatened, smiling when he got the iconic dramatic response from hyunjin.
" 59..58..57"
hyunjin could still hear Minho's counting from a distance, deciding to ignore the soreness in his feet, proceeding to venture further into the snowy landscape.
the weight on his feet grew more and more heavy, tying him down and slowing down his steps tremendously. his limbs were tired and sore, almost wanting to give up. the thin soles of the boot did little to protect him from blisters and frostbites, the sole of his feet littered with stray scars, evidence of the invasion of blisters from unsuspecting trees loaded with almost harmless looking thorns.
when Minho's figure faded out with the light snow storm, hyunjin wiped the snowflakes from his scarf, choosing to turn a blind eye to the growing pain in his feet.
luckily, he quickly found a great hiding sport. an inviting looking cave, with just the right amount of rocks and stones that acted like a path to guide him down the cave. hyunjin grew fascinated by the icicles the decorated the entrance, using all his strength to pluck one from its resting place.
the icicle was beautiful and clear, almost like a looking glass. hyunjin could barely make out his distorted face in the reflection, nonetheless coming to the decision to keep the item close to him to show his hyung later on.
however, he was met with another obstacle. huge snow covered stones were blocking the entrance. hyunjin tried to move the smaller one. after much effort , he managed to move it.
upon moving one of the boulder, a small space which allowed for him to enter the cave opened up. after squeezing his body to fit the small space given, he managed to enter the cave after much struggle.
minho seemed to be taking forever, and the snow storm that was growing bigger and bigger didn't help to soothe hyunjin's nerves. after waiting for another 15 minutes or so, hyunjin decided that it would be better to just admit defeat, then risk the chance of any other uncanny things happening to him.
he was distracted by another snow covered stone, a snow covered leaf settling on top of the surface. wrong move.
a shrill scream could be heard from the cave, almost overpowering the snow storm.
Minho's heightened hearing ability came into play, immediately approaching the source of the sound. he was already growing increasingly worried.
" hey.. hyunjin come out! it's not funny anymore... "
" where are you hyunjin? "
he shouted, voice turning hoarse with each shout. his voice overpowered by the harsh and relentless storm, drowning out his cries of desperation.
tears poured out of his eyes as his breathing quickened as reality soon dawned upon him. there might only be a slim chance of survival.
following the faint inconsistent footsteps in the snow that minho could only make out as hyunjin's, he followed them and it led him to the cave.
" h-hyunjin.. are you here?"
there was no answer.
there was no answer.
there was no answer.
there was only a trail of red, seeping through the ice.
all minho could see was red.
the trail of red that coloured the transparent ice.
the trail of red that served as a permanent reminder of his lost, painted messily across the snow covered stone.
the last tremble of such a familiar pair of hands, the boulder mercilessly crashing down on his body.
a line of red.
a line of red.
oh, it was such a grotesque position to be in. limbs failing around lifelessly, the last breath of any sign of life.
people always remember things when they are new.
the first time someone loved you.
the first time you cried.
the first time you lost someone.
the first time he experienced winter.
but why was it his last time?
minho remembered to.
the last time hyunjin loved him.
the last time he lost him. his one and only time.
the first and last time he experienced winter with him.
why was it his last time?
minho dropped to the ground, chest heaving and falling at uneven patterns. holding hyunjin's lifeless hands in his, tears coming into contact with the bloodied icicle in hyunjin's hand. the only memory left of winter.
it was so painful. Minho screamed. he screamed. he screamed so loudly he swore there were cracks in his cervices. his cerebrum only filled with memories of the younger. it was so painful. his heart falling into a million of pieces, screaming out in agony.
much like the trouble with snowman
his time will come to feed the rivers and streams, but for the moment he enjoys the sunshine, one twig-arm reached upward, the other toward the grass and soil. he's smaller than he was, but you'd never know it. snow melts that way, right? gradually like a picture being changed one brush-stroke at a time.
just like hyunjin.
why didn't he get the chance to enjoy his first winter?
