Fact Fifty-Four: There's a story behind the lyrics in the song. The story is fictional, the story's main characters were a couple. The girlfriend had died in a car accident, and the man lost his mind and was distraught by the sudden death of his girlfriend. He was losing his mind, he went to the Lord after thinking about taking his own life.

suggests that Kurt was referencing his imaginary friend, Boddah. Boddah was Kurt's childhood imaginary friend.
