4 years later
"I like how even after all this time, our parents still get so excited to see us,"
A soft chuckle left Giyuu's mouth. "I don't blame them, I still don't think they've gotten over the fact that its been 5 years,"
"God, I still can't believe it's been that long. It genuinely still feels like yesterday that you first kissed me on the stairs at my art show,"
He turned the steering wheel, bringing you into another open road.
"You looked gorgeous, I couldn't help myself,"
The red light up ahead caused him to slow the car down. He gently placed a hand on your thigh before squeezing it softly.
He pulled up outside your house shortly before running around the front of the car to open the door for you.
You left your bags in the trunk temporarily, eager to see your parents and your brothers.
Two gentle knocks later, your dad opened the door, a slightly tired looking smile on his face.
Your relationship with your dad had improved, a lot of apologies were made on his end, and things were definitely better than they were before.
"Hey," he said, opening the door for both of you. "They're in the kitchen,"
You walked through the all too familiar hallways, Giyuu trailing behind you.
"There they are!" Your mother and his mother gushed, coffee in hand.
You greeted them both with hugs and chuckled as Giyuu's mother playfully squished his cheeks.
"I'm 25." he grumbled.
"Won't stop me," she sipped her coffee.
"Are we doing anything later?" you asked.
"I figured we'd have a massive dinner party. I've invited all your friends and family."
"That's great, but may I ask why?"
"Why not?" she shrugged, looking between you and Giyuu, who awkwardly placed his hands in his pockets.
"Your dad is doing a barbecue, I figured it would just be nice to celebrate having you home and all your accomplishments so far, plus it's a beautiful day,"
Giyuu placed a quick and gentle kiss on your exposed shoulder.
"She's not wrong," he whispered.
"Mitsuri and the others will be here at around 3 pm, so make sure everything is all set up,"
"Will do," you nodded before disappearing with Giyuu to your childhood room.
"She's so over the top sometimes," you said, flopping down.
"I think she's just excited to have her daughter home," he sat down next to you.
"Your brothers have grown up as well," Giyuu acknowledged, watching them walk right past the open door.
"They're only 12,"
"I remember when they were born," Giyuu stated.
"Everything has gone by so fast,"
"I know. But I wouldn't have it any other way," moved a strand of hair from your face.
"I love you," you placed a hand on his wrist.
"I love you more,"
-
"Giyuu!" Your brothers smiled as they approached you both, standing in the kitchen
They gave him a fistbump.
"Hey, how's it going?"
They told him about school, and their friends and the other stuff that 12 year old boys talk about.
"That's impressive," he said politely as they told him about the time they had made an experiment blow up in science.
The guests were slowly starting to trail in.
"Y/n!!" Mitsuri called out.
You ran towards her, squeezing her tight. "I've missed you!!" You smiled.
"So have I!"
You greeted everyone else.
Even Sanemi allowed you to quickly hug him.
Tengen and his wives, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru, made an appearance shortly after. And so did Tanjiro, Nezuko, and that lot.
You weren't sure why so many people had turned up to something as simple as a dinner party, but you weren't complaining at all.
"Inosuke, don't eat all the food it's for the guests," Zenitsu cried out, prying away him from the counter.
Giyuu had started getting oddly fidgety the past hour. However, when you asked him about it, he assured you that he was fine.
"You're growing up so fast," your grandma said, on the verge of tears.
Did every single person in your house know something you didn't?
Why was everyone on the verge of tears every time you spoke to them?
"Hey, dad," you walked over to your father, who was starting to prepare the barbecue.
"Hey, Y/n, everything okay?"
"Have you seen Giyuu? Or mum?"
"I haven't, sorry," he gave you a sad smile.
You walked around a little more, catching up with different family members and finally spotting your friend group.
"Hey guys,"
"There she is!" they said before Mitsuri pulled you into a hug, almost crying.
"I love you so much, Y/n!"
"I love you too, but what is with everyone today,"
"What do you mean?"
"Everyone is overly sappy today. My mum nearly started sobbing about how proud she is of me, and Giyuu's been awfully distracted as well,"
"I think he's just mentally preparing,"
"For what?" A puzzled look crept upon your face.
"You'll know," the pink haired girl placed a hand on your shoulder.
Slightly confused, you drifted over to where your mother was standing.
Your garden had always been blessed with the most beautiful archway. Covered with roses and lights and vines.
It was absolutely beautiful.
With the afternoon slowly morphing into the evening, the atmosphere grew calm, even more so when the chatter started to die down, and you were left to your thoughts.
"Mum, again, with the tears, I love you, but what is with you today?"
"You're growing up right before our eyes."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'll let Giyuu explain that,"
You turned around almost instantly, as your mother left your side. Immediately met with those blue eyes you had grown to love.
"Y/n..." he spoke softly before getting down on one knee.
Your heart jumped, and it was safe to say you were truly at a loss for words.
"Y/n. From the very age of 13, I learned that the people you love most can be gone in an instant. I isolated myself from the world, never letting anyone get close to me. But then, I found you. As kids, our childhoods were intertwined and were filled with relentless teasing and nasty words, but I think even then I loved and admired you. Even if I wasn't exactly aware myself. When I'd barely talk and put minimal effort into our conversations, most people would walk away. But you stayed. You see something in me that even now I barely recognise myself, the love you have for me and others is still something I don't think I deserve. Y/n, you are the greatest woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. You're beautiful, smart, an amazing artist, and have so much love to give, I promise that if death do us part, I will find you in every lifetime."
He took one last deep breath, opening the small velvet box revealing the most beautiful ring inside.
"Marry me?"
Your eyes welled up, and you nodded.
"Yes. Yes, yes. 100 times, yes,"
A sigh of relief emitted from his lips, and the moment he was standing straight, you jumped into his arms, pressing a long and gentle kiss to his lips.
Cheers and clapping erupted from the crowd ahead of you as Giyuu placed you down and slipped on the ring that had a beautiful midnight blue sapphire engraved in it.
"I love you," you whisper, cupping his cheeks.
"I love you more, my darling,"
You quickly caught Mitsuri's gaze, who was just as teary-eyed as you. She gave you a friendly wave and thumbs up as Obanai pressed a kiss on her shoulder.
Your mother and his mother hugged both of you tight.
"I'm so proud, sweetie," Giyuu's mother spoke, pinching his cheek.
"Thanks..."
Your dad walked over and gave you a quick side hug before turning on the barbecue.
You ran over to your friends and rugby tackled them to the ground in a group hug.
"WOOO!" Mitsuri cheered, noticing the ring on your finger.
"Congrats," Sanemi semi-grumbled before patting your back.
"Congratulations, Y/n!" Rengoku smiled.
Tanjiro and the others congratulated you, too.
The food prepared by your dad and a few others was tasty. There was nothing more perfect than eating barbecue after being proposed to.
-
"I get to call you my fiancรฉe now," Giyuu spoke, as you watched your family and friends slowly pour out and head back to their respective homes.
A large grin formed on your face.
"I know. I'm excited,"
"Do you like the ring?"
"It's perfect. You're perfect,"
He slipped his hand into yours, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
Tanjiro gave you one last wave with his friends, just before Sanemi ruffled Genya's hair and forced him in the car.
"What time is it?" you asked.
"Midnight," he smiled, letting go of your hand and allowing his arm to rest over your shoulder.
You wrapped your fingers around his wrist.
And as the last car drove off, and your parents sat inside with two glasses of wine, a wave of relief washed over you.
"Giyuu," you spoke his name into the air.
"Hm?"
You looked up towards the sky.
"The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"
