The girls were already at Sophia's house, laying on her couch and watching some TV. They were talking about what had happened at the party, but Sophia wasn't really listening.
Instead, she was scribbling down some lyrics to a new song she'd started composing. Ignoring her friends talking to her, she jumped up and ran to her piano. She sat down and started playing the first few notes.
She sang some of the lyrics, and that was all it took for her friends to shoot up from the couch and walk over to her, mouths open in awe.
Nova was the first one to say something once Sophia finished the chorus of the new song. "That's absolutely beautiful," she said, and all the girls nodded along.
There was a second of silence before the doorbell rang, causing Sasha's head to abruptly turn to the door. "I'LL GET IT!" She yelled while sprinting to the door.
She opened it, and behind it stood the triplets. Sasha jumped into Matt's arms, attaching her lips onto his, making it official to all of their friends.
Matt pulled back and looked around the room. "Good going, Sash," Matt said, and they all started laughing. Finally, a happy moment in the middle of an awful month.
Chris walked out behind Matt, and like always, Sophia's gaze stuck to him. "You guys are disgusting," Chris told his brother while playfully rolling his eyes.
Sophia turned back to the piano, trying to get his voice out of her head. But before she could get away, Madeleine spoke up with a brilliant idea, and Sophia's only wish now was that she could disappear.
"Come over here, guys, Sophia was playing the prettiest song I've ever heard," she said as she waved them all over, and Sophia's breath caught up in her throat.
She immediately shook her head. "No, guys, I don't think that that's a good idea," she said but was interrupted by the boys walking up to her, and Nick putting an arm around her shoulder.
"Please, please, please, I beg you," he said while he pressed his hands together in a praying position. Sophia put an awkward smile on her face while she looked over to Chris.
He simply nodded his head, and she sighed. "Fine," she said, and all of her friends positioned themselves around her piano. She shook her arms out and positioned them on the piano, looking over at Chris a last time.
"I only have the chorus and the end, so it's pretty short for now," she told them and slowly started playing the chorus.
"I sit and watch you, I notice everything you do and don't do. You're so much older and wiser, and I" she sang, and Chris found himself admiring her even more. "I wait by the door like I'm just a kid. Use my best colors for your portrait, lay the table with the fancy shit. And watch you tolerate it" she continued singing, and Chris furrowed his eyebrows. Where had he heard that before?
She continued singing, disturbing his thoughts. "While you were out building other worlds, where was I? Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?"
Then it suddenly hit him. She was singing the words he'd said to her. She was quoting him in one of her songs. His heart clenched because she looked like she wanted to cry, making Chris' heart break again.
"Break free and leave us in ruins. Took this dagger in me and removed it. Gain the weight of you then lose it, believe me, I could do it. If it's all in my head tell me now. Tell me I've got it wrong somehow, I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it, so I sit and watch you" She finished the song.
She turned around slowly, looking at her friends' reactions. Her eyes still lingered on Chris a little longer; she'd hoped he wouldn't notice, but by the way his jaw was clenched, she noticed that he did.
Very different things were playing through Chris' mind. What the heck was he doing? This was Sophia, the girl he'd had a crush on for way too long. The girl he should've supported through all the hate. So what was he doing with Mia?
He needed to fix this. And he needed to fix it quick. He turned to the door, making Sophia jump up and walk after him. "I'm so sorry, Chris, I shouldn't have put it in the song," she said while she walked after him. All of their friends were confused at their interaction.
Chris turned around, a sympathetic look on his face. He shook his head. "Don't say that. The song was beautiful, Soph. I'm going to fix this, I promise. I'm going to fix us." He said as he walked to the door and left, leaving all the people in Sophia's house more confused than ever.
Chris slammed the door of Mia's apartment open, walking inside like he owned the whole building. Mia jumped up from her bed, walking up to him, but when she leaned in to kiss him, he pushed her back slowly.
"What's going on, Chris?" she said while she twirled her hair on her finger. Chris couldn't even look at her, ashamed of his actions. He decided to keep it short and sweet.
"Whatever we had. It's over," he said, turning around, ready to walk out of her life forever. She grabbed his arm before he could. She pulled him back. Chris groaned and yanked his arm out of her grip.
She grabbed it again. "It's not over until I say so," she said while she growled at him. Chris raised his eyebrows. This girl was absolutely crazy.
Before he could stop it, that very thought escaped his lips. "You're crazy," he huffed, yanking his arm out of her grip again. She crossed her arms.
"I'm not the crazy one; you came running back when she didn't want you, and now you're trying to tell me you're leaving me. There's no way," she said.
Chris couldn't believe his own ears. Was she really trying to tell him that he couldn't leave her?
He turned around again, ready to leave for real this time, but he only got more annoyed when Mia positioned herself in front of him.
He'd had enough, so he pushed her to the side. "Get out of my way, Mia," he said, walking to her door.
"NO. YOU CAN'T LEAVE!" Mia yelled from behind him. He turned around abruptly. He pointed a finger to her face, having had enough of her dramatics.
"Listen. You knew that this," he pointed between them, "wasn't ever going to work out because my heart belongs to Sophia. And it's been that way since I first laid my eyes on her. I'm actually sorry that I brought you into this, but I was confused, I was hurt, but I see it all clearly now. I'm in love with her, and I want to be with her and only her. So you're going to let me go and never show your faces in our lives. You understand?" Chris rambled out without even taking a single breath, just needed to get this confession out of his body.
Even if it had to be to Mia.
Her mouth hung low, but she simply nodded her head without even looking at him. He left and slammed the door closed behind him.
The way to Sophia's house seemed to be way longer than he'd remembered. He was calling her every ten seconds, but she wasn't picking up. "Damn it, Soph," he argued while he ran down the street, sprinting to get there before it started raining too much.
His breath was all he could hear in his ears while he was running, running so fast he could swear that his legs were going to give up on him.
His phone to his eardrums, he let it ring more than 10 times before it went to her voicemail again. He hung up the phone, cursing at himself.
It was already dark outside, the sun had set half an hour after Chris had left Sophia's house. And while he was running, he could feel some raindrops falling onto him already.
He finally got to Sophia's house. Since she wasn't answering her phone, he decided to take some little pebbles and throw them at the window of her bedroom, hoping that she'd hear them.
He threw one, and there was no sign of life. He threw another one, and when, again, she didn't show herself, he picked up a third one. Before he could throw it, though, he saw Sophia's head peeking out of the window. "Chris? What are you doing here? I thought you went home," she yelled down.
Chris sighed in relief. "No, I didn't. I went to Mia's house," he said, and he saw Sophia's face twist in discomfort. "Can you please come down?" He said, practically begging her.
She sighed but agreed nonetheless. "Give me a second, I'll come down. I just need to put my shoes on," she answered, and Chris nodded at her.
She closed the window, and Chris stood at the stairs of her door, waiting for her to come down, while the rain started pouring down on him.
He needed to fix this, and now was his last chance.
This is it.
