I stood on the rooftop of the apartment building across from the one where my target lived. Samuel Henderson, an engineer with S.H.I.E.L.D. intel. The information that can lead straight to the exposure of HYDRA.

Looking through his window, two stories down from where I stood, I saw Henderson sitting in his study. I watched and waited for the perfect moment to strike, when Henderson left his study, and the intel alone. I turned around and on the ground, was a black rifle case. Opening it, I pulled out a sniper rifle and aimed it at the window. Looking through the scope, I shifted the aim to the window lock.

Of course, as a rich engineer, Henderson wouldn't have an ordinary window lock. So of course, this rifle wouldn't fire ordinary bullets.

Keeping my aim at the lock and my focus through the scope, I wrapped my finger around the trigger. "Pop! Goes the weasel." I tunefully muttered before firing the bullet at the window. The bullet connected onto the window lock, disabling the security system on it. I placed the rifle back into its case before shutting it close.

I looked over to apartment building across from me, seeing the fire escape stairs in front of the windows. I took a few steps back before running across the roof and jumping off the edge. I launched myself to the the apartment building and caught onto the railing of the fire escape above Henderson's window. I let go of the railing, gracefully landing on my feet, in front of the window.

Looking through the glass, I slid the window up to open it before stepping inside Henderson's study. No one was inside, and no one knew I was here. My eye instantly met the flash drive on his desk containing the intel. I grabbed the flash drive to slip it in my pocket.

At this point, you would think the mission was over. A stealth assignment, get in, get the drive, get out. But as Pierce said, as long as Henderson and his knowledge remains alive, HYDRA is at risk.

I grabbed my two chakrams from the strap on my back and walked over to the closed door that led to the living room. I took a deep breath, preparing myself for what comes next.

          Here we go.

I kicked open the door and charged into the living room. Henderson's wife instantly started screaming and stumbling back. A tall man, dressed in black, who I would assume was his bodyguard, came running towards me. He threw a punch which I quickly bent down to dodge. I swung my fist that held my chakram to slice him in the throat. The bodyguard grabbed his neck as the blood dripped under his hand and fell back, bleeding out.

I looked over to Henderson, who tried reaching for his phone, and threw one of my chakrams to his chest. The rounded blade landed right at his heart as his back hit the wall before he collapsed to the ground. With the other chakram in my hand, I turned my attention over to Henderson's wife.

"No! Please!" She sobbed out, holding her hands up. I ignored her pleas for mercy and threw the chakram at a horizontal angle. The chakram was sent flying towards Henderson's wife and deeply sliced her neck, before flying back to me, where I caught it in mid air. I yanked my other chakram out of Henderson's chest and slipped both of them on my back.

I heard a sudden creak of the floorboards behind me and instantly turned around with my fists up. Standing there, was a young girl, looked about the age of six. She looked around the room, seeing her mother and father, dead and drowning in their blood. Her eyes then met mine, and as I looked into them, I only saw pure innocence and terror. She was horrified, her eyes begging for mercy. She never asked to live a life her parents built her, she never asked to see her parents be brutally murdered either. She was innocent. I let out a heavy breath of disappointment, softening my cold expression just a bit, but not a lot.

          Orders are orders.

I slipped the hand gun from my thigh holster and quickly aimed it at her forehead, shooting her three times. Her body collapsed onto the floor that soon became stained with dark red. My eyes turned away from the sight of the pool of blood before I walked back into the study. I placed my finger on my earpiece as I slipped out the window and back onto the fire escape.

"Ready for extraction on Rooftop B." I confirmed before making my way to the rooftop.

I stood alone in an abandoned vault underneath a bank, waiting for Pierce, which soon ended when he walked inside with the S.T.R.I.K.E. team behind him.

"Mission report." He ordered as he came closer.

"Flash drive was obtained" I answered in a slight monotone manner, handing him the flash drive, which he then took. "and no one was left in the house alive." I added.

"Good work, Carter." Pierce complimented, looking down at the flash drive in his hand. My eyes moved to the ground, which Pierce seemed to notice. "You look distressed."

"You never mentioned a child was there." I replied, remembering the little girl that I murdered in cold blood.

"I don't see why it makes any difference." Pierce defended.

"She was innocent, she didn't ask to live the life her parents brought her in." I slightly raised my voice, but just not enough to receive a slap in the face.

"Your orders were to eliminate Henderson and all witnesses that lived in the household." He took a step closer. "And do I have to remind you of what happens if you fail to follow those orders?"

My mother. He would kill my mother. That was Pierce's tactic against me, if I don't complete my missions enough to satisfy him, he'll kill my mother. If I try to escape, he'll kill my mother. If I call for help, he'll kill my mother. It seems like a lot to risk for just one person, but she's the only bit of hope I have left in this world and I am not about to lose that.

"No, sir." I softly answered, trying to maintain eye contact with Pierce.

"You're excused." Pierce nodded. I gave him a nod back before turning around to leave. "Oh, and Sarah," He called out to stop me midway.

"Yes, sir?" I turned back around to face him again.

"Happy Birthday." Pierce wished with a small, and also fake, smile. I knew it was half-assed and not genuine. If he wanted me to have a happy birthday, he wouldn't have made me go out as a killer.

"Thank you, sir." I gently nodded my head, still maintaining a straight face.

I sat on the bed in my bedroom, wearing black jeans and a zip hoodie over a black tank top. Of course, my bedroom was more of a cell. Grey walls, white bed, a small television and a single nightstand. Just what every eleven year girl wants.

I payed attention to the news program on the TV, listening to the exaggerated stories.

"Reports state that the NASA base in California, run by S.H.I.E.L.D., collapsed after a setback from experimentation." The news anchor woman explained. I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the report. "So far, we have no word from the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nicholas Fury, about the recent events."

I bet Pierce is already getting glamoured for a press conference at this very moment.

"Although, witnesses claim sightings of what seems to be an Asgardian. What does this mean for our planet? Has S.H.I.E.L.D. been using our technology to assist foreign planets in our extinction?"

Another Asgardian incident? I remember hearing about the first one that happened last year. I guess family drama on other planets aren't just refined to a court case and a family law attorney.

"Next up, police have reported that Samuel Henderson and his family were murdered in their own home. MPD indicates no clues or evidence that lead to a suspect."

I let out a heavy sigh, hearing the news woman talking about what I've done. I could only imagine how normal people are reacting as they watch my horrible act. They would think, only a monster could be so capable of this, and they would be correct.

"Although, some theorize that this was the work of the newly infamous, Phantom Nightingale. An unidentifiable assassin who arose six months ago. In this short period of time, there has been over a hundred unsolved cases of murder. There have been no traces that lead to who this killer is, leading some to think, 'Is the Phantom Nightingale just a hoax?"

I quickly grabbed the remote to turn off the TV. I couldn't listen to anymore of what I already know.

I've only been in HYDRA for two years, yet it's felt like forever. You might say, you're only protecting your mother, it's not your fault. But tell that to my victim's families. Tell them that it was either their loved ones, or mine, and I chose mine. Who could be that selfish?

Although, in the past two years, the killing has gotten easier. I obviously don't like the killing, but I don't hate it, either. I'm just numb to it. That's why I could kill the girl with little hesitation. I feel nothing when I take away these people's lives. The only thing to hate is myself for doing it.

The silence in my room was interrupted by the sound of the hand radio on my night stand.

"Secretary Pierce is requesting you in the vault, Agent Carter."

I stood in the vault next to, none other than, Sergeant Barnes, the man who kidnapped me. I obviously didn't blame him for what he did, I know Pierce is controlling him. But abducting me wasn't the only thing Barnes was ordered to do. He's the one who trained me, taught me everything I know, how to fight, how to shoot a gun, everything. We've even done quite a few missions together, and considering how Pierce requested us both, I would assume he's assigning us another.

"This is something our scientists have been working on." Pierce opened a black case to reveal rows of grenades.

"Stun grenades?" I questioned, a bit confused. Non-lethal wasn't really his style.

"A lethal one. So loud, it'll kill you before it bursts your eardrums." Pierce closed the case before turning back to face us. "But, I didn't bring my two best assassins here just to show them a couple bombs. No, I brought you here for an assignment."

Thanks for the birthday present, Pierce. I really do appreciate it.

"Alasatir Keith, leader of a terrorist group. He agreed to become an ally and weapons supplier for HYDRA about five years ago. But he didn't fulfill his promises. I need you to take him out, and his entire team. I expect a full report in forty eight hours." He instructed as me and Barnes stood there silence.

"Yes, sir." We both replied at the same time.

Well, time for another adventure of the Phantom Nightingale and Winter Soldier.
