ʙʀʏɴɴᴇ [ʙ-ʀ-ɪʜ-ɴ] / ʀʏɴ [ᴘʀᴏɴᴏᴜɴᴄᴇᴅ: ʀ-ɪʜ-ɴ ᴏʀ ʀᴇɪɢɴ]

Simon had been kidnapped by vampires that resided at the Hotel Dumont. The Shadowhunters made a plan to save Simon but in secret, as the vampires didn't break any of the Clave Rules and they weren't going to ask the Clave for permission. Clary doesn't try to reach out to Brynne, leaving her in the dark about Simon's disappearance. When the Shadowhunters do go to the hotel to save Simon, they end up finding Raphael who gives them an unharmed Simon without a fight.

After being saved Simon was so entranced with Clary giving him all her attention that he doesn't notice the absence of Brynne.

Leaving the long night behind them the Shadowhunter along with Simon head back to the Institute. Clary had fallen asleep allowing her mind to wander and allow her to dream lost memories. In the lost memories, Clary dreamt about her mother arguing with a man whose eyes glowed and hands emitted a blue smoke. With a gasp, Clary woke up immediately sitting up on the bed only to be faced with Jace. She starts to relax letting out his name as she caught her breath only for the illusion to fade and Simon appears before her.

"You all right? You still seem kind of freaked" Simon says making Clary blink rapidly trying to see if what was in front of her was to change once again but when it didn't, she knew that he was real

"Simon," Clary says in an exhale making Simon raise his hand to let it rest on Clary's shoulder

"Hey. I got you. You're okay." Simon says trying to calm down the girl from her frantic sleep, "Must have been one hell of a nightmare"

"You have no idea. I was strapped to this piece of furniture and my mom was there. She kept telling this guy to protect me, but then he reached his hand into my skull and ripped out my brain" Clary shares as she was trying to make sense of what she had to relive

"Hello, Freddy Krueger," Simon says with a frown

"Tell me about it." Clary says running a hand through her hair making her realize that Simon was in the infirmary the last time she saw him which is where she had expected him to still be in as he had lost a lot of blood, "What are you doing here anyway? Shouldn't you be in the infirmary?"

"Uh, I just really needed to see you," Simon says skeptically and tries to cover it by mentioning Brynne "I tried to find Ryn as I didn't think they would let her roam around freely but no luck"

"S-she left while we were in the City of Bones," Clary says taking Simon by surprise as it didn't sound like something Brynne would do. Yet before he can ask any questions Clary changes the topic away from Brynne "I am so sorry that my messed up life put you in danger"

"I'm fine," Simon says reassuringly

"No, if those vampires hurt you, I couldn't live with myself. You're all I've got left" Clary honestly says as takes hold of Simon's hands

"Don't get me wrong, I'm totally grateful that your friends got me out before the vampires drained me like a Big Gulp." Simon jokes making Clary chuckle before he looks at her seriously, "But how well do you know this Jace guy? Can you trust him?"

"I think so. I mean, he saved my life and yours"

"True. But I was thinking all of this craziness started the minute you bumped into him at Pandemonium. You think that's just a coincidence?" Simon asks making Clary look around the room they had given her as she didn't know how to answer Simon's question

"Honestly, I don't even know what to think anymore. All I know is I have to get my memories back. I need to know who I really am. Maybe-- Maybe I saw where my mom hid the Cup, and-- and if I could just remember I could save her. I just wanna put all of this behind me. But I don't know this world. I don't even know where to start looking. I'm...I'm just lost" Clary says struggling to make sense of it all

"Hey, okay." Simon says taking hold of Clary's hands, "Look, start with what we know, okay? We know that dreams are remnants of memories. You saw your mom in the nightmare before the guy was reaching into your brain"

"Yeah, she... She called him Magnus. I mean, it's completely random, I never—" Clary says trying to remember the words spoken in her dream but by surprise, Simon cuts her off, "Magnus Bane?"

"Maybe. Why? How do you know that name?" Clary asks her best friend as it seemed impossible for him to know anything about the world she now was a part of

"I heard it from the vampire. You know, the shockingly hot one, it was..." Simon chuckles before looking at Clary making him stammer an apology "Sorry, uh, Camille. She was super pissed at this Magnus Bane guy when I told her that someone took your memories"

"Simon! Simon, you're amazing!" Clary says with a chuckle as she couldn't stop smiling "You've just You've given me my first solid lead"

"I did?" Simon asks the redhead who was getting out of her bed and slipping into her shoes. Simon notices Clary's hurry to get out of the room, "Awesome. Wait, where are you going?"

"I have to find Jace and tell him about Magnus Bane," Clary says as she slips on a sweater and then places her hands on Simon's shoulders looking him into his eyes with a smile "What would I do without you?"

Not waiting for a response Clary hurries out of her room leaving Simon standing alone and disappointed that once again he was being left behind for Jace. Simon passes a mirror only to see blood dripping from his mouth and suddenly from behind him, he sees Camille. With a sudden panic, Simon decides to leave the Institute but not without trying to convince Clary to join him. In the end, Simon walks out of the Institute leaving Clary behind to learn more about Magnus Bane.

Isabelle had woken Alec and Hodge because of Jace's orders. The five Shadowhunters meet up in a room where Hodge led the meeting on Magnus Bane. On the screen, Hodge was able to pull up any photo and information that the Institute had on record of who Magnus Bane is and looks like.

"Magnus Bane. He's over 300 years old. And, as you can see, he's not exactly shied away from the pleasures of every century. His tastes are both exquisite and quite excessive" Hodge says as he pulls up an image of Magnus on the screen where Magnus was in a club surrounded by men and women one of the women in the photo was Brynne. Since Magnus was the objective no one could take notice of Brynne

"He looks like the Downworld's David Guetta," Clary comments taking in Magnus' bold makeup and fashion style

"Guetta's already a Downworlder." Isabelle replies making Clary look at the brunette in shock not knowing if she was telling the truth "Vampire? Ever seen him in the daylight?"

"Can you two focus? This is not a joke" Alec says not enjoying their banter

"Someone needs to get slayed" Isabelle comments making her brother roll his eyes

"Alec's right. Now, Magnus is one of the most powerful warlocks I've ever known. He has a deep mistrust of Shadowhunters." Hodge explains to the group why it was serious that they focus

Another image of Magnus appears on the monitor and this time Brynne was at his side. The only difference between the Brynne Clary knew and the Brynne on the monitor, she was dressed in leather leggings a red Cami, shoulder-length hair, and a full face of makeup that highlights her Asian facial features. Yet Clary was not the first to take notice of Brynne in the photo

"Isn't that your warlock friend?" Alec asks Clary not saying Brynne's name although he knew it. Clary looks at the screen where indeed Brynne was in a photo

"Ryn. i-I think so but I don't know, she looks so different" Clary says as she had never seen Brynne with short hair, nor with such figure-fitting clothes

"Did she ever give you her full name?" Isabelle asks wondering why they weren't trying to get in contact with Brynne the only supernatural friend Clary has had in her life for years

"Brynne Jeung or at least that's the name she told me. I don't even know if that's her real name" Clary says making Hodge type in the new warlocks name only for there to be no information in their system on her

"I'll run a facial recognition scan on the photo to see if we get a hit. It is possible that she did give you a false name to keep up with pretenses. I'll inform you when I find something on her" Hodge says but doesn't leave the room as they had yet to come up with a plan

"Why did Magnus help my mom remove my memories? Isn't she a Shadowhunter?" Clary asks wanting answers and a better understanding of everything but for now, the one person who she had a name and information on was the person they had to start with

"Yes, one of the best. But "help" might not be the most accurate word. Now, did Magnus provide a service for Jocelyn? Perhaps. But more than likely, your mother paid Magnus handsomely for his magic" Hodge explains to Clary  making her look a the screen as it was now back on Magnus' file

"Warlocks usually require payment before they help anyone with anything" Jace clarifies for Clary making her wonder but not voice out loud what type of payment would the reason be as to Brynne inserting herself into Clary's life

"Word from the Clave is that most of the warlocks have gone into hiding since Valentine began hunting them" Alec informs the group making Clary stay quiet about Brynne as if she was Magnus' friend and they didn't seem to notice her then maybe that meant she wouldn't be hunted down or that her being quiet and finding Magnus would help find Brynne

"Valentine must be searching for the warlock, where did Jocelyn—" Hodge tries to say before he has stopped because the circle rune on his neck starts to burn his skin, he places the tablet on the table before resting his hands on the chair in front of him trying to control his breathing to not think much on the runes sizzling

"Hodge, your rune. You okay?" Clary asks but Hodge doesn't respond, "So how do we find Magnus?"

"We don't. Magnus finds us. We'll set up a meeting, somewhere protected. Lure him out of hiding" Jace strategizes from his seat next to Alec

"And I know exactly where we do it," Isabelle says as she stands up to take Hodge's tablet pulling up on the screen a flyer with orange writing of a rave

"A Downworld rave. Nice, Izzy" Jace says approving of Isabelle's idea

"And where'd you get that?" Alec asks unimpressed

"During my surveillance of the Downworlders. From what I hear, Magnus likes to party" Isabelle states

"He'll never go for it. Not with Valentine trying to kill him" Alec says not believing that a warlock would be reckless enough to attend a party that would leave him vulnerable to being hunted down by Valentine's people

"Of course, he will. He'll blend in. Hide in plain sight" Jace says certain of it

"I don't know, it seems..." Clary says hesitantly to the idea

"Trust me. If Magnus is coming out of hiding, he's going to one of the biggest parties of the year" Isabelle says with a smile

"Never underestimate Magnus' hedonism. Or his greed. Come with me" Hodge says as he walks them over to a spot in the training room where on the floor he starts to trace a rune that unlocks a safe on the floor allowing for a ruby necklace to appear. Hodge picks it up and holds it out for the team to take a good look at it

"Is that real?" Isabelle asks in awe at the necklace's beauty

"A four-karat, unheated Burmese ruby. And this necklace has special meaning to Magnus Bane as it was a gift from him to his then-lover, Camille Belcourt" Hodge explains to the group taking Clary by surprise

"What, Camille and Magnus were lovers?" Clary asks in disbelieve

"Warlock gets around," Jace says with a smirk

"Magnus bought it in 1857 for the price of his London townhouse. Now, the jewel is enchanted by a spell that alerts the wearer to the presence of demons" Hodge finishes telling them about the necklace's history-making Isabelle reach out for it holding the ruby in her hand.

"It's so beautiful" Isabelle gushes

"Magnus has longed to reunite with this necklace. Offer it to him. He might just take the bait" Hodge says setting the last piece of their plan in motion

"I'll send Magnus a fire message to arrange the meeting. We have to get to Magnus before Valentine does" Jace says leaving the room

In an apartment full of warlocks Magnus high-fives one of the youngest ones as he holds a drink in his other hand walking around the rooms until he is stopped by Elias.  

"Magnus, consider the other warlocks..." Elias voices as he follows after Magnus who had no intention of listening to him

"When did you become so talkative?" Magnus asks as he gives in, stopping by a window he faces Elias

"Magnus, I beg you to reconsider," Elias says just as Brynne walks into the room hearing the desperation in Elias's voice. Brynne having to pour herself a drink had spotted the two warlocks and noticing the look of despair on Elias she was over to them

"Reconsider what?" Brynne asks walking towards the two warlocks with crossed arms holding the glass of wine by the rim near her hip

"Nothing darling. Elias here just has yet to learn that he may be immortal but doesn't make him immune to crow's feet" Magnus says raises a hand to Elias right eye and touching the lines around his eye set in a panic in Elias

"Magnus you know I don't like pet names." Brynne says before she turns to look at Elias with a slight tilt of her head while narrowing her eyes, "Elias what does Magnus need to reconsider"

"He has agreed to meet Shadowhunters in order to retrieve a necklace. I am trying to make him see that it is far too dangerous for him to leave the lair with Valentine getting close." Elias says in a strong tone not wanting to let Magnus believe that he had stopped worrying

"I was alive when the Dead Sea was just a lake that was feeling a little poorly. While I value your counsel so much red brick makes me feel like a caged animal" Magnus says looking out of the window where their view was a red brick from another building

"Yes, and I was alive even before then, darling. Now what Shadowhunters?" Brynne asks as she steps in front of Magnus

"I will be meeting with Clary Fairchild and the Wayland boy," Magnus says with a wave of a hand making Brynne's breath hitch

"Elias is right, it is too dangerous for you to go. Which is why I will be going with you. After all, we both know you never go to battle without back up" Brynne says, and knowing that he couldn't protest or stop her from joining with a smile she raises her glass to clink it with the one he held

"Mmm! Go to the Spiral Labyrinth and tell Tessa that we need more shields. While I'm gone, have every warlock maintain the protective wards. I may be prepared to take on Valentine" Magnus says as he looks at his guests and then back to Elias but stops speaking to move Elias's face and attention away from the guests and back to him "but my guests are not. Drink up"

Elias takes the glass of wine Magnus offers and drinks it immediately. Brynne shakes her head and walks past the guests to get to her room. Chugging down the glass of wine Brynne gets ready to attend a rave.

The shadowhunters had arrived at the club where they split up. Leaving Jace and Clary to walk toward the line to get in

"Alec and Izzy are securing the perimeter" Jace reaffirms Clary

"Are you sure this is a good idea? Last time we were here, this place was crawling with vampires" Clary says from their spot inline

"Relax, all Downworlders hang out here. We just came on vampire night" Jace explains keeping his eyes on the line in front of him

"Right. And when is all this gonna sound normal to me?" Clary asks as there was so much she had yet to learn or even be surprised by

"I don't know," Jace says as he looks behind him just in time to see Alec and Izzy getting in line behind them

"All clear" Alec declares as not once does he stop glancing at their surroundings instead of enjoying being on a job like Izzy was

"Do you think red's my color?" Izzy asks Clary as she takes hold of the redhead's arm

"Iz, with a body like yours, everything's your color," Clary says looking at her with a smile

"Good point. Damn, I make this necklace look so good" Izzy says with a smile as she looks down at the ruby

"Will you take it off? I'm certain Magnus Bane doesn't want drool on his ruby when we make the exchange" Alec states not carrying for anything other than the night being over 

"You know, I wouldn't be so sure. Most men like it when I admire their jewels" Izzy playfully says with a smirk

"Can you just give it to Jace?" Alec asks making Izzy laugh but she listens and takes off the necklace

"You're such a buzzkill," Izzy says as she raises the necklace for Jace to take

Once it was their turn to enter the club the Shadowhunters are met with loud much, strobing lights and bodies dancing either alone or together.

"Blend in. Keep your weapons ready" Jace speaks over the music giving Izzy and Alec their orders before he and Clary walk over the Magnus who they spotted fixing his eyeshadow "Magnus!"

Magnus stands up from his seat taking in how much Clary has grown since the last time he saw her, "Clary Fairchild. Ryn was right you've grown into a beautiful young woman"

"Magnus Bane. So you're the one who stole my memories" Clary says trying not to let his words phase her

"At your mother's request. She knew the risk. Show me the jewelry, Shadowhunter" Magnus says looking at Jace making him take out the necklace and let it hand on his hand.

Meaning that when Magnus went to reach for it Jace was able to move his hand back and out of Magnus' reach, "Ooh! Give Clary back her memories, and you get the jewelry"

"I have to confirm it's authenticity." Magnus says making them hand him the necklace and he turns the gem around to see the engraving that read the simple word 'Amour' "'Amor verus numquam moritur.' 'True love cannot die.' Oh, how I've missed this jewel"

"Now, it's your turn to pay up" Clary states making Magnus look away from the necklace and back to the redhead

"I wish I could retrieve your memories, but I no longer have them"

"What? Where are they?" Clary asks worriedly for Magnus was her last
