After their roles had been revealed, there was a list of rules given to them and a basic explanation of the game. How there would be various roles and what each role could do. Jiwoo was familiar with the game so just skimmed the instructions. It then went on to detail how at eight am the game starts and it lasts until midnight, in that time they have to select who they believe to be the mafia.
When the next part of information flashed on her screen, Jiwoo had frowned, reading how at midnight, the participants with the most votes will be executed. There was something about the word 'execution' that made her skin crawl and nausea settle in her stomach.
She was certain it had never been worded in such a way when they had played before.
Opting to ignore it and pass it off as a game, Jiwoo turned to the other two girls and frowned, wondering if they should give in and just play whatever this was. They debated casting a vote and looked at the chat that had begun, apparently everyone else was voting for Heo Yool, believing it to be him.
Pressing his name on her phone, Jiwoo noticed that a box had appeared, showing his photograph and a confirmation. Tapping accept, she dropped her phone onto the table and glanced at the other girls, noticing they had done the same thing.
"It's such an odd game to play." Yoonseo mumbled, shaking her head tiredly as she stared at the game menu on her phone.
Jiwoo nodded, tapping her finger against the table. "How did they have all of our names and photos?" She questioned, it seemed too thought out for the usual prankster to be behind it.
At that, Yoonseo frowned. "I didn't even sign up." She announced to her two friends, which further fueled the mystery.
Tapping her phone screen, Jungwon furrowed her brows. "The internet is not working, how are we able to play the game?"
Neither girl could offer a response because they just did not know what was going on, nothing made sense. A question was merely followed with another question rather than an answer.
Jiwoo was beginning to grow anxious, tapping her phone on to open her message, finding that there was still a 'failed to send' message in the chat with her mother.
What was going on?
Opting to find answers for themselves, the three girls left their room and made their way to reception, noticing that the desk was empty. Their teacher had left earlier to get the other students and he had not returned since. Despite looking, they could find no inclination as to where everyone had gone.
Noticing a familiar figure walking down the stairs, Jiwoo dropped the paper she had picked up and walked towards him, "Oi, Junhee," Jiwoo called out to her brother who paused, "do you know where the teacher has gone?"
"He didn't say where, just that he needed to get the others." Junhee replied and Yoonseo frowned, furrowing her brows in thought.
"Did he say when he'll be coming back?" Yoonseo prompted, wanting to know if perhaps he had any idea what was going on with the mafia game.
Junhee shook his head and stepped towards the reception desk. "I can't reach him either. Are any of your phones working?" He quizzed, tapping the screen of his sister's phone, which had been resting on the desk.
"No, they aren't. Where's the staff here?" Yoonseo looked around, noting that the place seemed abandoned.
Sighing, Junhee glanced at his sister's unsent message to their mother and then back at the three girls, all equally perplexed with their situation. "I guess they all went with the teacher, no one is here."
Jungwon frowned at this, moving the desk chair slightly. "What? What do we do then?" She asked, without any adults here they were stuck. "How long do we have to wait?"
That made Yoonseo get the idea that they should try and locate a phone in the office. So, with no other options, they tried to find the office.
When they got there, they noticed that it, alike everywhere else, was abandoned, half drunk cups of coffee and phones that did not work. Everything they found out just further confused them, where had everyone gone?
The phone had suddenly begun to rung but it immediately cut off when Jiwoo had picked it up, disconnecting when she tried to ring back. Glancing from the phone to the others in the room, she was about to comment on the oddness of their situation when her phone buzzed in her jacket pocket.
Taking it out, she read a message about Yoonseo needing to meet Somin in the pool urgently and when she asked the others about it, they were equally confused. However, Junhee seemed to realise what was going on.
Apparently for the event they were interviewing everyone to ask about the trip.
With a sigh and a lack of answers they left and headed towards the pool, finding Joowon on their way. His nose was bloodied and he had a frown on his face as he hurried away, but paused when he heard Junhee calling out his name.
Upon seeing the boy, Jiwoo grimaced as she squinted slightly, unable to decipher what it was that he had sticking out of his nose. "Is that a tampon in your nose?" She quizzed, feeling Junhee elbow her side to shut her up quickly. "What?" She defended in a whisper as he shot her an incredulous look. "I was just asking."
"Where are you going?" Junhee questioned, opting to ignore Jiwoo's prior comment as they walked towards the boy.
As he explained briefly and vaguely what had happened, Junhee frowned and announced to the girls that he was going to talk to the boy more, he would join them soon. With a nod, the three girls split from the boy and headed in the direction labelled the pool.
Yet, once they arrived there, one of Somin's friends stopped Jiwoo and Jungwon from walking into the actual pool area, being told that they needed to wait out there, in the hallway, for a second. So, the two girls nodded and awkwardly glanced around the hallway, wondering what was taking so long.
However, singing made them share a confused glance, deciding to ignore the rules given to them and just go investigate. As they walked in they noticed that Somin was stood with a birthday cake made up of various chocolates and she was singing happy birthday. The others videoed it, laughing along at the startled Yoonseo.
It was, at first, a nice thing to do, wishing her happy birthday, but the more Jiwoo thought about it, the less sense it made. Why were they glancing at one another as if on a big inside joke? Why bring her to a secluded area alike the pool? Why were they videoing?
When they finished singing for her, Jungwon made them known and voiced her confusion, commenting on how they barely acknowledged the girl's presence nevermind wishing her a happy birthday. Yoonseo merely shook her head at her friend, not wanting to cause any issues, and thanked them.
Just as Jiwoo suspected, it was for anything but niceness. Two guys appeared beside Yoonseo, lifting her off the ground as Somin revealed she was going to get 'a birthday beating' for her present. She screamed in horror, attempting to pull out of their hold as best as she could.
"Put her down, you psychos." Jiwoo called out, rolling her eyes as she took a step towards them.
Somin stepped in front of the girl with a mocking grin. Her eyes moved towards the two boys holding Yoonseo as she laughed. "Put her down, put her down, she's about to cry." Somin told them through her laughter.
They did as asked and Jiwoo frowned at her friend who was hyperventilating on the pool floor, attempting to catch back her breath. "We went too far, didn't we?" Somin held out her hand towards the girl who was on the floor. Once she pulled up the girl, she stepped closer to her and Jiwoo got the awful feeling that she was not quite finished. "Happy birthday." She told Yoonseo, smiling mockingly as she pressed her hands against her shoulders, pushing her back.
Jiwoo's eyes widened as the girl splashed in the water, going under the depths. "What the fuck is wrong with you, Somin?" She exclaimed, pushing the girl out of the way as she stood by the pool's edge, checking that Yoonseo would be okay.
Once the girl emerged from the water, she crouched down and encouraged the girl to swim towards her, checking she was okay. However, before she could even reach her, the girl was submerged once again, dissapearing in the dark depths.
It was barely a second of consideration before Jiwoo threw her phone to the side and jumped in after her friend, faintly hearing someone scream behind her. As she swam down, she saw Yoonseo frantically trying to go towards. However her movements suddenly came to a stop and Jiwoo panicked, swimming faster towards her.
She quickly grabbed the girl, pulling them both to the top. It was hard holding yourself up, as well as another person, but she managed it.
Looking down at her friend, she noticed that the girl's eyes were closed, possibly unconscious. As she tried to catch her own breath, she attempted to swim to the edge, although it was not going well. She was a strong swimmer, but it was hard swimming whilst also carrying the weight of an unconscious girl.
On occasion, she would submerge back under the water, emerging seconds later as she spluttered from the water.
Entering the room upon hearing loud chatter, Junhee took one look in the pool, at his sister struggling with his friend and he glanced at the group of bystanders before jumping in. Every part of him was telling him not to do it but he ignored it. He saw the panicked expression on his sister as she struggled, he saw the unmoving form of Yoonseo and he just acted.
Junhee was not about to let it happen again.
And so he jumped in, swimming quickly towards his sister. Once checking that she was okay, they repositioned Yoonseo and carried the weight of her between one another. Jungwon helped them out of the pool and handed Jiwoo her phone while the girl grimaced at the feeling of her wet clothes against her.
Her brother barely gave the others a second look as he took Yoonseo somewhere to check she was still breathing and okay.
The ebony haired girl pulled herself off the ground and glanced at the startled teens that had caused all of this. "You make me sick, you're all heartless." She scoffed as she walked past them, needing to get away from them all.
How someone could just push someone into a pool, unprovoked, was beyond her. What if Yoonseo could not swim? What if Junhee had not got there when he did and both girls were unable to assist her out of the pool?
Some people's lack of care for others disgusted her.
