On the bus there was a class of students, some sleeping, some talking, some reading or some listening to music. At the back sat the louder and more energetic students, engaged in a game of mafia but as the bus got closer to the front it became calmer.
In the middle rows, the two Kim siblings sat together, Junhee peacefully sleeping with his head resting against the window while Jiwoo was flicking through her book. She had just finished painting her nails and decided the best way to pass time was to read. Normally she spent bus rides talking to her brother but he was exhausted and she was not ready to disturb him.
Feeling eyes on her, she turned her head to notice the Kyungjun was staring right back at her, his hair slightly disheveled, hinting that he had possibly been sleeping before. She was confused but looked back at her book with a frown. After a few seconds, she turned and looked again, noticing that he was still staring back at her.
Kyungjun was confusing, she knew he was not a nice person, the best word to describe him was a bully and she could not ever see past that. Yet, when they were alone, if they had been partnered together for class or even just finding themselves in each other's company, he was someone else, someone almost...nice.
Anytime she was close to believing that he had possible potential, he destroyed that and said something to Joowon that just made her dislike for him grow.
How could somebody be so cruel to another person she could not ever comprehend.
Pushing the thought to the back of her mind, she diverted her attention back to the book before her and allowed herself to be pulled into a different reality. Her freshly painted red nails pushed against the page and turned it over, sending her deeper and deeper into the fictional story.
Once night had become to fall, midnight washing over the small bus, they finally arrived at their destination. It was odd leaving the bus and seeing that it was pitch black outside, it made Jiwoo wonder just how long they had been on the bus for, it had barely felt like five minutes.
When they stepped off the bus, they grabbed their belongings and made their way inside, Jiwoo nudging Junhee's shoulder as she raced past him. Yoonseo chuckled at the two's interaction, especially at the small frown that pulled on Junhee's lips as he shook his head at his sister's antics.
Stepping inside, Jiwoo seemed transfixed with the statue that was in the entrance, pausing momentarily to just stare at it. The woman was looking down and it felt oddly as if she was looking directly at her.
Shifting her eyes from the woman, she noticed a small sign and she stepped towards it.
Scan the QR code to connect to the WI-FI and install the youth centre app automatically.
Jiwoo dug through the pocket of her jacket and grabbed her phone, moving towards the camera app. Holding it towards the sign, she paused for a second and allowed it to open the QR code before pressing the link that had popped up.
With her phone connected, she followed the other students into the gymnasium where they had begun to set up. She joined the other girls that had begun dancing, following along with the choreography easily. Jiwoo had been enjoying herself until Mina had begun to mess up slightly, meaning she had literally had to move her into the correct spot.
Normally she would have just ignored it and moved on but when they had first arrived and moved to positions, she had heard the girl whispering to her friend about how Jiwoo was trying too hard to stand out. The other girls were wearing black and white but Jiwoo wore a red shirt with white cuffed sleeves, paired with similar coloured pants.
As far as Jiwoo was aware, there was not a dress code, so what was her issue?
Continuing with the choreography, she found her eyes drifting to a familiar figure walking past them. He caught her eye and gave her a sly smile before walking towards their speaker and pressing pause on the song. With a wink directed at her, he hurried off as the girls stopped what they were doing to glare at him.
"Real mature asshole." Jiwoo complained, pushing her hair out of her face and rushing towards the speaker.
When the music started again, the girls continued their choreography easily, although Mina had once again barged into Jiwoo when she was doing her part. All she could do was give her a glare before continuing, wondering why the girl suddenly had it out for her.
As soon as they finished, the girls moved to sit on the ground, adjusting their makeup as they spoke amongst themselves. Jiwoo caught sight of Wooram videoing them and sighed, he always had that camera in his hands and sometimes it was annoying.
Applying her lipgloss as a finish, Jiwoo stood up and made her way towards Yoonseo and Jungwon, who were stood with a group of others at the tables. She was bored of listening to the other girls and their conversations.
It was not that she disliked them, she was unsure if she even disliked anyone, they just all seemed very fake, even with one another. The amount of times she had heard them talking nastily about each other...
Moving to stand at Yoonseo's side, she sighed, tapping her phone irritably. "Is the WI-FI working for any of you?" Jiwoo asked and they all shook their heads. "Shit..." she frowned as she turned her phone off, "mum will kill me if I don't message her soon."
Junhee chuckled, about to remind her that it would be okay when a loud and piercing noise made his words pause. It made them all collectively wince, placing their hands over their ears in an attempt to stop the noise. Almost instantly, all the lights shut off and the students were dropped into total darkness.
As soon as an odd cackling noise hit her ears, Jiwoo frowned, realising it was all a prank and Yool was probably behind it. She grabbed her phone once again and used it for the flash, others mimicking her actions.
In the centre of the room there was a figure with a white sheet over them, stood ominously. While others begun to scream, Jiwoo rolled her eyes, he really had to get better pranks this was not even funny.
Although she did laugh when a basketball suddenly crashed into the body, knocking them down to the ground. Once he dropped, the corner lights had begun to turn on and they could finally see the culprit.
"Hey, listen, listen carefully." Yool called out to the group of students. "I heard something here. A female high school student committed suicide here once. There's something you absolutely can't do." He paused dramatically as Jungwon and Jiwoo shared an annoyed look. "Don't look back after looking in the mirror past midnight, and don't look even if someone grabs your ankle while you are asleep. If you don't follow these rules..." He trailed off and glanced around the room dramatically.
Suddenly, Yool begun to race towards the girls nearby, yelling, "It's a ghost!"
As shouts of disgust followed, Jiwoo took that as a sign to ignore anything that left his mouth, diverting her attention back to her phone. The sign had mentioned the WI-FI and yet there was no service, nothing was loading.
"Come on," Jungwon nudged the girl, "we're going to our room."
The three girls, Jiwoo, Jungwon and Yoonseo were rooming together which the Kim girl had been thankful for. She got along with everyone, she was well liked and polite no matter what, even with those she was not most fond of, she acted civil. Yet, rooming with them seemed like a nightmare and she was thankful she would not be enduring it.
So, the girls headed towards their room, discussing Yoonseo's upcoming birthday as they walked.
Once in the room, they claimed their beds and made themselves comfortable as they took out what they needed. Yoonseo and Jungwon moved to sit at the table, one girl opening her laptop while the other read through her book. Jiwoo sprawled across her bed, complaining about how warm it was in their room.
A chime of her phone made her grab it off her stomach, wondering if perhaps her message to her mother had finally sent through. However, she was surprised to see that instead of that, there was a different notification.
Clicking the notification, she frowned as she looked at the message that had appeared on her screen.
Welcome.
The writing disappeared into the blood red black drop as more white writing popped up.
The Mafia game starts now.
Check your occupation now.
Glancing at the other two girls in the room, Jiwoo furrowed her brows as she realised that they had received similiar messages. Her eyes moved back to her screen where a little white envelope appeared in the centre. She pressed the screen and the envelope opened, revealing more text, this time stating her 'role'.
Kim Jisoo, your occupation is police.
"I'm apparently a civilian." Yoonseo called out and Jiwoo pulled herself off the bed to sit next to the girl, turning her phone off as she walked. "How about you guys?"
Jungwon glanced at her phone and then the two. "Me too." She replied, both their eyes darting towards Jiwoo.
Now, she was certain that this was just another prank, a silly game that one of the guys had created to waste their time. However, if they did end up playing it for the fun of it, she was not going to let them vote her out so soon. Everyone knows that the Mafia target police and doctors so they can further increase their chances of winning.
So, Jiwoo glanced at the blank screen of her phone and then the two girls, smiling slightly as she nodded. "Yeah, me three."
