Summary: Me and Marv keep bumping into each other in NYC

Words: 2.2k words

Modesta stormed down the stairs of her apartment complex while her now ex-boyfriend frantically followed behind her. Today was going absolutely horrible for her, and right now she just wanted to go home and sleep it off. But she couldn't even do that. Because once she returned home from work after being laid off, she found her boyfriend cheating on her with some other girl in her own apartment that she paid the rent for. So her immediate response was to grab as much as she could and leave out onto the dangerous streets of New York. "Can we please talk about this?" He called after her, but he got no response. "Listen to me!" He shouted again. Nothing. Then he grabbed her shoulder and forced her to turn in his direction, which caused her to snap from everything that's happened to her the past few days. "NO!" She shoved him backwards, "Why the hell would I listen to you? What do you even have to say, huh?" Modesta basically screamed at him. "It was a mistake." He simply said, but Modesta wasn't having it. "Mistake my ass! I've been dealing with your lazy ass living in my apartment for too long, we're done!" She screamed in his face before turning back around and walking down the alleyway. Afterwards he didn't even try to follow her after her huge outbreak.

After that Modesta was left on the streets with only a few dollars in her pocket. Soon something unexpected happened that felt like a beam of light in a dark room. While walking down the crosswalk to get across the street, she felt someone grab her bag that was carrying all her belongings from her apartment. At first Modesta thought that she was being robbed, but it was actually quite the opposite when she turned towards the stranger. "Sorry-" He said while yanking off his hand that was covered in tape and coins. Even after Modesta found herself staring at him a little longer than she should've. Just something about him made her forget about everything that has happened to her, made her forget she was even sad in the first place. "Marv, come on!" Harry pulled Marv's arm and forced him across the crosswalk. Except even after the both of them disappeared from sight, the thought of her still lingered in Marv's head. He was surprised that she didn't get upset at him for accidentally getting his hand stuck to her bag, but the way she looked at him instead of slapping him. At this point he was almost determined to leave Harry behind and try to retrace his steps to find her. Modesta on the other hand, hated herself for feeling like she was already falling in love with that stranger after just breaking up with her boyfriend. But her boyfriend cheating on her and her bumping into Marv on the street could be a sign. She shrugged it off and went about her day. There were times more than once when Modesta would accidentally bump into that same stranger from before. She even saw him from a distance at some times. Sometimes she would've wished that she would go up to him and at least try to talk to him instead of just ignoring him. Marv would also see her as well, noticing her beautiful figure from across the sidewalk. To him, she looked so different compared to the crowd of people that would always be surrounding her. But he also knew Harry would never let him get into a relationship, especially after they broke out of prison just a few days ago.

A sigh escaped her lips as she stood idly in front of the crowd of people, waiting impatiently for the traffic to calm down so she could cross the street. But something stopped her from her thoughts. There was suddenly a pinching feeling coming from her thigh, causing her to quickly turn around to see that same stranger she saw before. Marv looked towards her and smiled, "Well hello." He said, but her immediate response was to blush at the very thought that he was probably the one who pinched her thigh. Kevin was somewhat disappointed that his plan of trying to get Modesta to slap him didn't work. "What?" Harry seemed confused on why she was just staring at the both of them. She wanted to take this opportunity to go ahead and talk to him, but at the same time she just couldn't quite get the words out. But the kid that was standing in between the both of them, seemed to break free from the distracted people and run off. Modesta sighed as she watched the handsome stranger once again run away from her. But that wasn't the last time she saw Marv again. Sometime later Modesta had bumped into her now ex-boyfriend again, which didn't end well for her. Except she was lucky enough that someone was nearby. "Modesta!" Her ex called out to her, no response. "Come here!" He suddenly gripped her arm tightly and yanked her into the alleyway she was walking past. "Get off me!" Modesta screamed and kicked at him, "Stop being so loud." He said through gritted teeth. "I've been looking all over for you." He smiled, "now that I've finally found you. I'm gonna make you regret leaving me." He laughed while yanking her towards him. "Leave me alone!" She cried out, hoping someone would hear her cries of help. That was when Harry and Marv just so happened to be walking nearby when he heard Modesta screaming for help. Harry was in the middle of lecturing Marv about the incident with Modesta earlier. "Leave me alone!" A feminine voice screamed from nearby. Marv stopped in his tracks while Harry did as well out of confusion. "Do you hear that?" Marv asked, "It's New York, things like these happen all the time." Harry shrugged off his odd behavior. Except Marv didn't listen to Harry, he just pushed past him and kept following the screams of help becoming progressively closer. Then he stopped in an alleyway where he saw that same girl that Harry was just talking about. All the stupidity left his body once he stormed over to the guy trying to hurt Modesta. "Hey!" Marv shouted, making the both of them stop and look towards him. "What are you gonna do?" The male laughed in Marv's lousy attempt to save Modesta.

Marv quickly looked around before reaching into Harry's pocket and pulling out his revolver. "Marv, you don't even know how to use a gun!" Harry said, "Shut up." Marv said to Harry for the first time. "Let her go or I'll shoot!" Marv pointed the gun towards him. But Marv seemed convincing enough for the stranger to let Modesta go and disappear into the darkness. Modesta collapsed onto the dirty pavement floor out of exhaustion. Marv quickly gave Harry his gun back and quickly rushed over to Modesta. "Are you okay?" He asked her, "I-I think so." She mumbled out while Marv helped her to her feet. But Harry on the other hand seemed shocked that Marv would even attempt to save someone. "Hey, I remember you." Marv smiled down at her as he instantly recognized her as the one he accidentally bumped into while walking across the street. "Yeah, me too." She weakly smiled back in response. "You can stay with me and my friend if you don't feel safe by yourself." Marv helped her keep her balance while walking towards Harry. "T-Thanks." Modesta muttered as she began to walk with Harry and Marv. Although that wasn't the last time she had accidentally bumped into her ex-boyfriend, she was sure as hell glad that Marv and Harry were there to protect her. "Hey, the hell are you doing?" Modesta heard his familiar voice from nearby, "Why can't you just leave me the hell alone?" She somewhat cowered in between Harry and Marv. "Because you won't accept my apology." He stood in front of the two men as he spoke, showing the major height difference between him and Marv. "I would rather die than do that." Modesta crossed her arms. She was about to speak up again when Marv spoke up. "Kid, she doesn't want you. Might as well scram before I take out that gun again." Marv's grip on the fabric of Modesta's shoulder tightened as he spoke. "What are you gonna do?" He laughed, "We don't have time for this." Harry groaned in annoyance at the pathetic human being. Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out the same revolver from before, then shot inches away from his head as a warning shot. "I said leave." Harry tucked the gun back into his pocket. The smug look on his face vanished instantly at the sound of a gunshot. He ran off and after that incident, Modesta had never seen him again.

So here she was, depending on two fugitives from the law for protection. Even after all the horrible things that have happened to her so far, she felt as if her happy side was trying to escape. And she knew why; because Marv made her feel like there was nothing else in this world. The way he would joke around, his laugh, his smile, his everything. Everything about him drove her crazy. Marv would also constantly check up on her, and if the expression on her face looked the least bit sad, he would do his best to change her frown into a smile. "Hey, how about that candy store over there?" Marv pointed towards a candy store nearby, "Marv, we've been over this. We are NOT robbing a candy store." Harry snapped at him. But his stupidity just made the smile on Modesta's face even bigger, which is exactly what Marv wanted. "I don't see why not." Modesta finally spoke up. "See what I mean? Even she agrees!" Marv complained, "Then the both of you are a bunch of 9 year olds." Harry responded. Both Marv and Modesta groaned in annoyance at the same exact time.

Marv couldn't help but keep his eyes on Modesta. He never even thought that someone like her would even like being around him, especially someone as beautiful as her. Just the sight of her smile alone was enough to make him flustered. But he never even knew that Modesta felt the same way. They discovered their feelings when the both of them were sitting outside in the moonlight, watching the stars above from the large buildings. Harry went off somewhere, but Marv didn't want to go because he wanted some time alone with Modesta. "Beautiful, isn't it?" Marv glanced down at her, seeing how focused her eyes were on the sky. "Yeah." She turned her head towards him, a smile spread out across her face. "I never liked star gazing until I met you." Marv spoke up, "Awww." Modesta smiled until her face hurt at the compliment. Except when Modesta looked back up at the sky, Marv still continued to stare at her. It was almost as if it hurt him to look away from her. "Do you ever feel like..." Marv started as he struggled to get the words out, "...that you're in love?" He asked. "I mean, I thought I was with my ex-boyfriend. But I guess I haven't truly been in love before." Modesta responded. "Do you ever wonder what it feels like? Because I've never even held a girl's hand before-" Marv started becoming embarrassed at the thought that a 35 year old had never even had any physical contact with any girl besides his own mother. "I do sometimes." Modesta didn't seem weirded out about Marv never having any physical contact. "I was asking because I have this weird feeling in my stomach." He said to her, "I do as well. Is this feeling what I think it is?" She looked up at Marv as she spoke. "I hope it is." Marv smiled. "In that case." She continued, "I think I'm in love with you, Marv." Her face became dangerously close to his, his hot breath against her lips driving her crazy. "Y-You are? I mean, I definitely am too-" He laughed nervously while glancing into brown eyes that sparkled underneath the streetlights above. "You're too adorable." She closed the gap in between the both of them. Marv on the other hand had no idea how to react. He cautiously laid his hands on her, feeling more in love from each passing second.

Marv still had the same shocked look on his face. "Wow, that was- amazing." He smiled widely, "It was better that I imagined." Modesta replied while keeping her face close to his. Harry stopped when he noticed that Marv and Modesta's faces were both really close to each other, and that Marv had his hands wrapped around her body. "Did he-" He stopped in thought. "Okay, that's gross. Am I interrupting something?" Harry approached the lovestruck couple. "Oh shit, your back already-" Marv mumbled from the amount of embarrassment he was feeling. "I don't even wanna know what I just walked in on." Harry said. Modesta just laughed at his reaction before leaning towards Marv for warmth.
