THE TWO TEENS looked to where the sound of a ringing phone was coming from, with tears stains in both of their eyes from the crying earlier, they stayed in their postion, not moving an inch. None of them wanted to answer the phone, they had given up all hope on escaping this place, and it was okay. That had come in agreement to the fact that they wouldn't make it out alive, it was hard and there was still some doubts and sadness, but it was what they needed to do. They had come to the conclusion that they were going to die, by the Grabber, in this shit hole. The two of them hopelessly walked towards the ringing telephone, Finney slowly picked up the phone and put it in between his and Avery's ears.
"What?" The boy asked, resting his head on the wall.
"Hey, Finn. What's happening?" Avery's eyes widened and her body froze as she heard the familiar voice coming from the other line of the phone. She couldn't believe it. The girl instantly recognized that voice, she always would, she would probably recognize that voice from miles away. She was talking to Robin, Robin Arellano. Avery couldn't believe her ears, she had forgotten about Robin and how he had been kidnapped, he was the last kid to get kidnapped, he was Avery's closest friend out of all the victims, how could she forget about him? She didn't know what to say, her body wouldn't move, and she felt more tears in her eyes, daring to fall.
"R-Robin?" The girl asked in disbelief, her eyes now glossy from the tears building up in her eyes.
"Hey, Aves. Don't cry, please." Robin spoke. Avery didn't think she had anymore tears left in her, but she did. Because after hearing his voice all she wanted to do was crumble into a little whole and cry. But she wouldn't, she wouldn't let him see her cry, because he deserved better than this.
"I-I'm not." Avery spoke, quickly wiping the tears away, trying her best to control her voice so it wouldn't sound as if she was holding her tears in and as if she hadn't just been crying.
"Yes, you are. I can see you, both of you."
"You can?" Finn asked. Avery didn't know if she should feel safe or creeped out, Robin was her friend and she always felt safe around him, and he always protected her at all costs, and to be honest, she was kind of glad that he was watching them because that meant he was still with her and Finney. But, it was pretty creppy if you think about it, he had been watching them and he had probably seen the kiss between the girl and Finney Blake. Oh my god, he saw the kiss.
"I'm with you guys. I've been with you two this whole time."
"You have?" Finn asked once again.
"A man never leaves his friends behind. My dad didn't leave his buddies behind when he went to Vietnam, that's why he didn't come home." Avery knew how hard it was for Robin to talk about his dad. Robin didn't mention his dad a lot, but the girl knew what had happened to him and she was there for Robin everytime he needed a shoulder to cry on. She knew that Robin loved his dad deeply, that he was proud of his dad and all the things his dad had done, and accomplished and Robin had become just like him, and Avery was so proud, and she was sure his father was too.
"And I'm not coming home either, and I'm not going to leave you or Avery behind." Avery felt her heart break, more than it had before. She knew Robin wasn't going to come back home, come back to her, but having him say it just deepened the meaning, and it made it true, one hundred percent true, and now there was no hiding from it. He had come to sense that it was his fate, his ending. And he didn't sound sad, he sounded confident, he had come to the agreement that his journey had ended, and he was okay with that.
"We'll be together soon." Finney spoke. Avery felt shocked by his words, but it was true, they had both lost hope and they had to face reality.
"Fuck that. You guys ain't gonna go like I did."
"We've tried everything and nothing worked. Nothing, Robin." Avery tried hard to hide the pain in her voice, the pain she was feeling physically and emotionally.
"Yet."
"Robin." The two unfortunate teens yelled in unison.
"You remember what I told you, Finn?" Finney's eyes widened at his question instantly knowing what he was talking about, remembering the day at the bathroom. Finney thought Robin was talking about how he kept staring at Avery when she was in the bathroom with the two of them, did Robin really want Finney to say that right infront of Avery? And in this moment?
"Uhh- uhmm-" Finney stuttered, his cheeks flushed. Avery had a confused look on her face, and she just looked at Finney with an arched brow. Finney did not want Avery to know that he kept staring at her when they were inside the boy's bathroom, even though he knew she felt the same about him. Robin simply chuckled from the other line as his friend stuttered. Even in this time, Robin managed to have some humor and let out a chuckle, a chuckle that sounded like music to Avery and Finney's ears. It made them feel good.
"Not that. The other thing." Robin spoke up, noticing how his friend was flustered as he thought about the other thing he had spoken to Robin about in that bathroom. Finney visibly relaxed, glad that Robin wasn't talking about that thing.
"That someday I'd have to stand up for myself."
"That day, is today, Finn. Today is the day you stop taking shit from anybody!"
"I'm not a fighter like you Robin, or like Avery. And you couldn't even take him."
"You've always been a fighter, Finn! That's what we all had in common, why we were all friends. You were always afraid to throw a punch, but you always knew how to take one, and you always got back up. Every time."
"I'm not strong enough."
"You'll have to be. Your both getting out of here. If you can't do it for you, do it for me. Do it for Avery." Finney looked at Avery, the girl that stood beside him listening quietly to the conversation. The girl he loved. He knew he had to help both of them escape, for her. But even though he wanted to escape, he wanted to help her, he knew it was useless.
"What does it matter?"
"Because I don't wanna have died for nothing, and I don't want Avery, or you, to go down like I did! I wanna at least have died for my friends. And because I can't kill that hijo de puta, you two are gonna have to do it for me!" Avery and Finney both felt the same emotion, sadness. But they also felt a hint of confidence, and a hint of revenge. They wanted to help Robin, so they were going to kill that asshole for him.
"How?" The two teens asked.
"You're going to use a weapon."
"What weapon?" Asked Finney.
"The one in your hand."
"The phone?" This time Avery asked the question.
"Fill the receiver with dirt, pack it in tight, give it some hest."
"Then what?"
"Then you practice. Over, and over. Avery knows how to throw a punch, so I'll teach you, Finn. You raise the phone, take a fast step back, step forward, step back and swing. Try it."
"Now?" Asked Finney. Avery moved and sat down on the bed, not wanting to be in the middle of Finney's punching.
"Yes. You raise the phone, take a fast step back, step forward, step back and swing!" Finney was now doing the movements with the voice, following every instruction Robin gave him.
"Again! You raise the phone, take a fast step back, step forward, step back and swing! Again! You raise the phone! Take a fast step back, step forward, step back and swing! Again. You raise the phone, take a fast step back, step forward, step back and swing!" Finney had finally got it. Avery watched him and everytime he swinged the phone, practicing. She admired him and how brave and commited he was.
"You got it. Now fill the phone with dirt like I told you." Spoke Robin.
"Will we still be able to talk with you?"
"This was the last call Finn. It's all you guys from here on now."
"I miss you, Robin."
"Then get out for me. Use what we gave you."
"We will." It was quiet for a second, as if Finney was waiting for Robin to hang up since he couldn't do it. But Robin didn't hang up, there was one last thing he needed to do.
"Hey, Finn, pass the phone to Avery, please." Without hesitation, Finney passed the phone to Avery, earning a confused look from the girl which the boy simply shrugged in reply.
"Hey, Aves." Robin spoke hesitantely. The two loved each other so much. Robin wanted the girl to escape, he wanted her to live her life so she could could have this great, bright future he always saw for her. And Avery wanted Robin to come back. To come back to life, come back to town and his family, come back to her. The two were basically siblings, even though they had the same age, Robin saw the girl as his younger sister, and that his duty was to always protect her. And Avery saw Robin as her older brother and she loved him and was so thankful for him and every single time he protected her.
"Hey, Robin." It was silent for a few seconds, none of them knowing what to say. Avery held in tears, not wanting to end the phone call and wanting to be able to hear him forever, hear his voice.
"I miss you, Robin. I miss you so much." Tears started to fall from the girl's eyes.
"I know, Aves. I miss you too. More than you know it." It was quiet again, the only sound heard were from Avery's sniffles.
"Aves, you're gonna get out, okay? I know it."
"Robin-"
"No, Aves. You will. You are not going to die in here, not today, nor ever. You're going to make it out of here, you and Finn. You can't die in here, you won't." It was silent again, Avery was taking in what Robin had just said and she held in her tears. The love they felt for each other was unconditional, and she was definetly never going to forget him. Avery didn't think much of this but, Robin kept repeating her nickname in every sentence. He was doing this because he knew it would be the last time he got to use her name, the last time he would be able to speak with her. So he wanted to say her name as much times as possible, so he remembered it, so it could be one of the last things he would say before he went away.
"Thanks, Robin." The girl said in between tears.
"For what?"
"For everything." Avery tried stopping her tears, but she was just too emotional right now, so the tears fell faster.
"Aves, promise me you'll get out of here. Promise me you'll get out and live the wonderful life you were meant to have. The life you deserve. Promise me." Avery gulped at his words, she wanted to keep his promise, she really did. But what if she didn't make it out alive?
"Promise me. Please, Aves." Robin pleaded. The sad time on his voice as she heard his voice begin to break from the tears forming in his eyes made the girl break too.
"I promise, Robin."
"Take care of my mom, will you?" Robin asked in hesitation. Avery could sense the tears on his eyes as he talked about his mom, and she began getting more emotional than before.
"Yeah, of course, Robin. I will."
"I love you, Avery Brown." Avery gave a small chuckle. Robin almost never used the girl's entire name, he always called her "Aves" or "Avery" but not once in his life had he called her by her full name, Avery Brown. Yet here he was, calling her by her full name in the last day they would be talking to each other, telling her how much he loved her. Saying "I love you" to others may seem as though the two were dating, or some romantic shit, but they weren't dating and they weren't romantic, not in a million years. The two were soulmates, but not romantic soulmates, they were platonic soulmates. Even though most of the time they were always bickering and annoying each other, one was always taking care of the other, they were two peas in a pod. They looked like complete opposites, and people who didn't know them would agree that their attitudes did not match, at all. But for those who actually knew the two, like they knew each other, they would see that Avery Brown and Robin Arellano had a lot in common and that's what made their friendship so special.
"I love you too, Robin Arellano." And with that, the phone call ended, and Avery was never going to hear Robin Arellano's voice again, she was never going to be near his presence or tell him how much she loved him again, because Robin Arellano was now officially dead, and there weren't any telephones or phone calls that could bring him back to life. She would remember this phone call her entire life. And she once she gets out, she'll keep her promise, she'll live the life she was born to live. She will get out. For Robin.
