Looking up at the blue sky, Aurora Black let out a sigh while closing her eyes. Peace and quiet never lasted long at Camp Nightwing. Perhaps that's why she felt a sense of foreboding, or perhaps it was because she was sitting in the shade underneath Sarah Fier's Hanging Tree. Her gaze returned to the book she was currently reading, 'Salem's lot' had been one of her favourites, the book was worn from how many times she had read the book, but despite this, she was always gripped as soon as she read the first sentence, "Everybody thought the man and the boy were father and son". She would question why this was important to her, why was this very line captivating. Even now she ponders that question.
While continuing to read she could hear chanting approaching her from the distance, heaving another sigh, she recognised the voices of Shelia, her followers and Will. Standing up to greet whatever situation was coming towards her, her brows furrowed in concern.
"Before the witches final breath, she found a way to cheat her death. By cutting off her wicked hand, she kept a grip upon our land. She reaches from beyond the grave to make good men her wicked slaves. She'll take your blood, she'll take your head, she'll follow you until your dead!" The girls chanted as they threw Ziggy to the ground roughly near Aurora's feet.
"Shelia? What's going on?" Aurora questioned in her precise British accent. Aurora had moved with her parents and sister from her home in England to Sunnyvale as her fathers family were originally from there and they needed to escape their demons, but that's a story for another time.
"String her up" ordered Shelia, "Rory just wait, I'll show you all about these Shadysides witch bitches! You can't trust them". Will obeyed and moved to tie up Ziggys hands to the tree, ignoring her pleas for him to stop.
"Well, well, what do we have here?" Shelia smirked while taking the money Ziggy stole out of her pockets. Aurora frowned, she didn't believe they had to go that far for stolen money.
"God damn thief!"
"No, no. She's not a thief. She's possessed by the witch." Shelia smirked wider while walking towards Ziggy. "The only way to explain her psycho behaviour-" Aurora gasped and stifled a laugh as Ziggy swore and elbowed Shelia in the face while cursing at her.
"Guess we're even now," Ziggy stated with a sarcastic smile.
"You know what they did to Sarah Fier, right? They hung her from this very tree." Shelia started, "But she would've died forever if you did what you always do to witches". She walked closer to her face. "You burn them". She snarled and turned to Will, "Give me your lighter".
"Wait-What?"
"Come on Shelia, that's enough! You made your point, you don't need to go this far!" Aurora said frantically, wishing she could diffuse the situation but the one thing she had come to learn from her short time in Sunnyvale was that there was no stopping Shelia once she started.
"You're new, Rory. I'll give you a pass for now because you don't know what these Shadyside bitches are like and how to deal with them. So watch and learn. Will, just give it to me!"
Will fumbled before passing the lighter and holding Ziggy still as Shelia walked towards her with the flame. Ziggy shouted as the flame licked her skin, Shelia quickly pulled it away as someone blew a whistle while running towards them.
"Shit Will, your brother!" Shelia said.
"The hell is this? Let her down!" Nick Goode yelled while running towards the group, Will tried to explain himself but was swiftly shut down as Nick threatened to tell their mum if he didn't let her down.
Ziggy fell to the ground grunting while Aurora rushed forwards to check on her. Not noticing Nick's lingering eyes as he got closer.
Shelia started explaining, "I went back to my cabin, the door was open, the next thing I knew my all money was gone and Ziggy was sprinting away". Kurt continued to twirl his whistle while pacing.
"Because you were chasing me!"
"Ziggy! You talk when I tell you to talk!" Kurt commanded.
"Did you see her take it?" Nick asked, trying to be reasonable.
"Everyone did" They all chorused minus Ziggy and Aurora.
"Aurora, you're being quiet. Nothing to add?" Kurt put the spotlight onto the girl wishing the ground would swallow her up.
"I didn't see her take any money but I've been reading under the tree. I only saw what happened when they strung her up." Aurora explained.
"Alright! Well, that's it, Berman! Five strikes, you're out!" Kurt decided while clapping his hands together after snapping his fingers. Aurora's jaw dropped, Ziggy gets kicked out for 'possibly' stealing money but nothing happens when you try to kill someone.
"I'm out?! They just tried to murder me!"
"Yeah, and I'll deal with them. But first! Get back to camp, pack your bags and call mommy cause you're done at Nightwing."
"I didn't do it." Ziggy denies.
"Oh yeah? Just like you didn't set the camp flag on fire, let out the camp rabbits or graffiti the outhouse stalls? I warned you-"
"Kurt..." everyone turned to look at Shelia, "It's not her fault, really." Shelia smirked once again, "she's possessed by Sarah Fier". Ziggy lunged forwards at Shelia and Aurora took a step back to not get caught in the crossfire. Nicks arms quickly locked around Ziggys to restrain her while speaking to Kurt.
"Look, we kick her out and someone's going to ask about the burn on her arm." He spoke trying to be the voice of reason.
"He's right, Kurt. Who do you think is going to get in trouble? They won't remember who did it, just the counsellor who let it happen. Why don't you let this one slide?" Aurora added, brushing her dark hair behind her ear. Nick gazed towards her, seemingly lost in a trance until Kurt spoke again after looking Aurora up and down.
"Alright, but one more strike and you're out for real, do you hear me, Berman? One more" He reasoned while holding up one finger. Ziggy broke out of Nicks arms laughing, looking between the three of them.
"Being bossed around by a Goode. Wow! Some things never change" She said before storming off. Nick and Aurora looked at Kurt's exasperated face before turning and following the girl.
"God, I hate that little bitch." Kurt murmured while turning away from the other campers.
Ziggy kept walking until she heard footsteps behind her and a voice called out.
"Hey, Ziggy! Wait up, please"
Ziggy huffed before turning around sharply, "what? Was watching all that not enough for you? Wanted to come and finish it off now you've learnt how to treat Shadysiders?!" She shot quickly before a hurt look overcame Aurora's face.
"No. I wanted to say I'm sorry and apologise for not stepping in to stop them. I'd much rather be friends with you than her. I think we got off on the wrong foot. I'm Aurora Black but call me Rory, I'm new to Sunnyvale." She introduced with a smile, sticking her hand out for a handshake.
Ziggy eyed her for a moment before shaking her hand, "Ziggy Berman, not new to Shadyside. You sure you want to be friends with the witch?" she asked while wiggling her fingers with a creepy sardonic smile.
"I don't really believe in that stuff, but if you do, then you have the rest of camp to convince me that the curse is real" She proposed while cradling her favourite book to her chest. Ziggy smiled but before she had the chance to respond they were interrupted by a boy with dark hair jogging up to them.
"Hey! You should probably have Nurse Lane check that burn out." He advised, looking at her arm.
"No, I think I'm just going to let it get infected and die!" She sassed turning away from him as Aurora looks uncomfortable, once again wondering why she's in the middle.
"What? I don't even get a thank you?"
"Oh! I'm sorry, I forgot! Thank you, King of Sunnyvale, future police chief Nick Goode, for rescuing poor, helpless, Shadysider me. How could I ever repay you? Oh, I know! I'll just bat my eyes at you like all the other dumbass girls" Ziggy finished with the middle finger while walking away backwards, "Bye Rory, come find me when you're not with this airhead".
"Bye!" Rory called out before turning to face Nick, "I'm sorry, she's probably just upset at the situation and didn't mean to take it out on you" She gave him a sheepish smile.
"You clearly don't know Ziggy. I meant to ask how are you fitting into Sunnyvale? It's a long way from England." He asked, Nick never had an excuse to talk to her so he was going to use this to its full advantage. She looked down towards her feet, kicking a little stone.
"Oh, eh, it's different. Can't say I was ever worried about a witch possessing me back home but the whole story sounds like it's missing something, like there's something else happening that others don't know about" If Aurora had been looking up she would've seen a slightly panicked expression on Nick's face, "Maybe it's just the inner book nerd in me. Sorry, I'm rambling" She laughed out.
"NO!" he spoke a little too loud causing her head to snap up and others to look in their direction, "no," he said quieter. "books, books are good. I know how to read!" Nick said with enthusiasm. Aurora smiled politely before responding.
"I should go check on Ziggy, you know, her burn? It was nice talking to you Nick, I think. I'll see you around"
"Yeah, you will! Be seeing me around, I mean, not that I won't see you, I will" Rory gave a tight smile while walking away promptly.
"Geez Nick, get it together!" He whispered to himself under his breath.
