Chapter Six

Angie just couldn't believe it. She walked back into the house like a zombie, and thought about how much of a beast Jared had turned into. She slowly moved through the house, not even caring who heard her. She trailed sand in, and just walked in straight to the bathroom.

She stripped off her sandy pajamas, and stepped into the warm shower. She washed off the sand, and cleaned out her hair. Soon Angie was just standing in the shower so that she could cry without anybody hearing her.  She felt the tears sliding down her cheek, but let them.

When she got out of the shower, she wrapped a towel around her, and grabbed her clothes. She walked into the hallway, and stopped at her door. Angie turned around, and saw Jared standing in his room. He was staring at her as he changed out of his sandy shirt. Another tear slid down her cheek, and she quickly rushed into the room. Angie saw Jared's head hang before she slammed the door closed.

Angie checked her time on her phone, and noticed it was early in the morning, so it wouldn't matter if she got changed. She put on jean shorts, and a blue t-shirt that hugged her waist.

She left the room, and went downstairs. It was quiet. Angie tried hard to ignore the silence by making herself a bowl of cereal. She sat at the table alone, and ate quietly.

A while passed, and soon Kate came downstairs. She looked fresh, and like she had been up for hours. "Good morning Angie," Kate smiled.

          "Morning Katherine," Angie sighed.

          "Something wrong?" Kate asked.

"I don't feel like talking about it now," Angie grumbled.

Kate shrugged, and made herself a bowl of cereal too. "Jared got in late again," Kate sighed, "That means we won't see him for most of the day."

"Is that how he always spends his summer?" Angie asked.

"Yup," Kate said, "Eats, sleeps, parties, and then ruins some property. Then somewhere in there is jail."

Angie nodded, and gripped her spoon tightly. Kate looked up at her and gave a weak smile. "I don't know what we'll do now though," She muttered, "Because if he gets arrested again, we won't be able to bail him out or pay for the damages. My Mom won't be able to afford it anymore."

"I'm sorry," Angie whispered, and Kate just shrugged.

"Would you like to come look around town with me today?" Kate asked, "I know you're sister's might be coming, but I think we'll be home in enough time to see her when she comes."

Angie looked at the girl who used to be a bother when they were younger, and now Angie only wanted to hang out with her. "I'd love to," Angie whispered, "When do you want to go?"

Kate's face brightened, and she stood up. "Let's go now," She cried, "You're already ready, so let's get moving!"

Angie smiled, washed her dishes, and then followed Kate out of the house. "Why don't we take my car?" Angie reasoned, while slipping on flip flops.

"Then you don't get the feel of the city," Kate told her, "You'll blow by everything in that car. No, let's take it to the end of the driveway, and then we'll walk around the city."

Angie sighed, and then got in her car. As they pulled out of the driveway, Angie saw Jared watching them from his window. Angie ignored him, and continued to pull out of the driveway. She parked the car on the side of the driveway, grabbed her money, and followed Kate into the small city.

First they did window shopping, but Kate wanted to try things on. So they both walked into the closest store, and tried things on. "Angie," Kate asked, "Do you ever do this with your Mom?"

Angie walked out of the dressing room in cute shorts, and a sleeveless top. "Yeah, sure," Angie answered, "Why?"

Kate came out in a purpled sundress, with her hair flowing over her shoulders. She had a small smile, and held tightly to the dress. "Do you not do this with your Mom?" Angie asked.

"No," Kate muttered, looking at the ground, "But I guess I would do it with an older sister if I had one."

"Why don't you do it with your Mom?" Angie asked.

"She doesn't have time," Kate murmured.

"Well then I feel honored to come shopping with you," Angie joked. Kate smiled widely at her, and then went back into the dressing room. "Oh, and Kate," Angie called. Kate leaned her head out of the dressing room. "I'm buying that dress for you," Angie told her, and didn't put up with any arguing.

Kate and Angie continued to shop.

They grabbed something to eat, and went home with full stomachs and full shopping bags. "Thanks Angie," Kate said, "That was so much fun. When Mom said you were coming, I didn't think you would want to hang out with me."

"You're more fun than you think you are," Angie laughed, "And I loved hanging out with you."

"I thought you would want to hang out with Jared," She confessed. Angie looked at Kate, and put her arm around her shoulders. Kate leaned into Angie like and older sister, and felt the warmth of her.

"You were a cutie when you were little," Angie told her. Kate blushed as they walked back towards her car. They put their stuff in the back of the car.

"I think Allie will like the top we got her," Kate told Angie.

"Yeah," Angie sighed, "To bad she didn't come."

"I'm glad she didn't though," Kate said, "I wouldn't have gotten you all to myself. Thanks for the awesome day Angie. I really did have fun."

"Anytime Kate," Angie smiled, "Now let's get inside before my sister comes."

Kate got into the passenger seat, while Angie got into the driver's seat. They drove down the driveway, and Angie knew her sister wasn't here, because she didn't hear the obnoxious complaining yet. "Kate," Angie said, while Kate started getting out of the car. Kate stopped, and turned around to look at Angie.

          "Yes?" She asked.

"I'm sorry about your Dad," Angie said truthfully, "He was a great man. I hope you know that."

Kate's face clouded, and she walked into the house with her bags. Angie turned off the car, and got her bags too. She slowly walked to the house and heard the girlish chatter of Kate and Allie. "And look, we got you this," Kate said, like she would have if she was a little girl again.

Angie walked into the room right as she saw Allie's face light up at the silky blue top that matched her blue eyes and her curly brown hair. She was the misfit of the three- with short curly brown hair, and crystal blue eyes. She looked like her mother. "Wow, this is beautiful," She gasped.

"Angie picked it out," Kate gushed, "And look, she got me this sundress!" Kate pulled out the sundress, and Allie and Maya oh'd and ah'd.

"That was nice of you Angie," Maya told her.

Angie patted Allie's shoulder, and said, "You're next." Allie's eyes glistened with excitement, and she looked at her Mother for approval. Maya nodded, and Allie smiled from ear to ear.

"I'm going to freshen up before my sister gets here," Angie announced. She wanted to warn everyone that Izzy might start complaining, but she didn't want to ruin their mood. They had such a hard time since their Father died, and this might have been the moment of happiness they wanted to cherish for a little. Angie didn't want to ruin that. So she slowly walked up the stairs, and into the bathroom.

She was in the middle of washing her face off, with her hair pulled into a ponytail, when she heard a car pull into the driveway. She knew it was her sister, because the door slammed, and Angie could just hear Izzy mutter, "Good God, what have I gotten myself into."
