Chapter Twenty Five
After Jared left, Kate gave Angie the phone and mouthed to her that it was her mom. “Mom?” Angie asked. She pressed the phone to her ear, and turned around so she couldn’t see Maya, Kate, or Allie.
“Hi Angie,” Jessica said in a sweet voice.
“What’s wrong?” Angie asked.
“Nothing’s wrong,” Jessica laughed. “Is it wrong for me to want to call you?”
“I’m not that far away,” Angie told her, “And I’ve only been gone for a few days.”
“But it feels like forever,” Jessica moaned, “The house is so quiet without my baby in it.”
“Mom,” Angie groaned.
“When are you coming home?” Jessica complained.
“I don’t know,” She sighed.
“Well hurry,” Jessica ordered. “So how’s the Shay family? What’s everyone like? Are they any different?”
“Of course they’re different,” Angie laughed.
“Isabel told me about you and Jared,” She said, “What’s going on there? Huh? Why didn’t you tell me about that?”
“Because I haven’t talked with you,” Angie grumbled.
“So what happened? Huh, huh?” Jessica asked.
“Mom,” She groaned, “Could we just talk about this when I get home?”
“Are they standing there?” Jessica sighed.
Angie looked back at Kate, who was eating something at the table. “Yeah,” Angie answered, “So how are things at home? How can the house be so quiet if Dad’s there?”
“He’s been on a business trip,” She grumbled, “It was last minute, and he offered to take me, but I didn’t want to go to Colorado. There’s nothing special there.”
“Tell that to the Colodians,” Angie joked. She could hear her Mother’s quiet chuckle on the other line.
“Oh I miss you, my Angie,” Jessica chuckled. Angie rolled her eyes, and shifted her weight. “Did you go in the ocean?” Jessica asked.
A slow blush covered Angie’s cheeks. “Why are you asking so many questions?” Angie countered.
“Oh calm down Angela,” Her mother laughed.
“I am calm,” She sighed.
“You don’t sound it,” Jessica snapped.
“Okay, Mom I have to go,” Angie replied.
“Oh, alright,” Jessica said, “When are you coming home?”
“I told you that I don’t know,” Angie snapped. “I haven’t decided yet!”
“Alright, alright,” Jessica laughed, “No need to get tense. I love you, my Angie, and I’ll see you when you get home.”
“Love you,” Angie grumbled, and then slammed the phone into the receiver. It made Kate jump, and look up from her snack.
“Everything alright?” She asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Angie responded, and then sat down at the table. She crossed her arms over her chest, and grumbled how she hated when her Mother was all needy.
“Are you alright Angie?” Kate repeated.
“Yeah,” She sighed, “I guess.”
Kate gave her a small smile, and flicked her black hair over her shoulder. Kate was just so pretty. Sometimes when Angie looked at Kate, she felt jealous. Kate was so beautiful, and Angie was pretty sure that she didn’t know it yet.
“So, are you and Jared…like…a thing…now?” She asked cautiously. Angie blushed deeply, and looked at the table. “Well?” Kate pressed.
“I guess,” Angie muttered.
Kate squealed with excitement, and reached for Angie’s hands. Kate held her friend’s hands tightly in hers, and wore a large smile on her face. “That’s so great,” She gushed.
“You don’t think it’s weird?” Angie asked.
“No, of course not silly,” She laughed.
“It’s not awkward for you?” Angie questioned.
“Angie,” She smiled, “Our Mom’s were making bets on when you two would start going out. I joined in, and I won! I was the closest.”
Angie smiled too, and continued to blush. “Mom raised my allowance,” Kate said, “Thanks!”
“Anytime,” She laughed.
“Now go get ready, I’m pretty sure Mom’s taking us out shopping,” Kate smirked.
“Yes ma’am,” Angie said, and then ran up the stairs. Once in her bedroom she pulled out shorts and layered tank tops before she pulled her hair into a pony tail and slid on flip flops.
Angie decided to jog back downstairs, and keep Kate company. Kate was bent over her plate, breaking apart her cookies. Angie sat down in the chair next to her. “Can I have a cookie?” She asked.
“No, mine,” Kate growled playfully.
The phone rang again, and Kate looked up. “I got it,” She called, getting up, and walking towards the phone.
“If it’s my Mom, I went to the beach,” Angie whispered.
Kate winked at her, and then picked up the phone. “The Shay house,” She said mechanically into the phone.
Angie leaned back in her chair, and stole a cookie from Kate’s plate. When she looked back at Kate, she was crying. Angie put the cookie down, and stood up off of the chair. “Kate what’s wrong?” Angie whispered.
Tears ran down Kate’s cheek, and she said, “Alright.” Then the person on the only line said something, and she replied, “I just don’t know.”
Angie walked closer to Kate, and wiped the tears off her cheek. “Okay,” She whispered, and then pulled the phone away from her ear.
“What’s going on?” Angie asked.
“MOM,” Kate yelled, “Jared’s on the phone!”
“Jared? What’s wrong with Jared?” Angie asked. The first thing she thought was that he was hurt. She prayed that he’d be alright. Then the second thing that came to her mind was that he did something wrong. He said he was going out with Ethan, and Ethan was trouble. Angie gritted her teeth, and swore to herself that if he hurt his family again, she would be extremely angry. He promised he wouldn’t.
Maya came bustling into the room with a box in her arms. “What’s in the box?” Allie asked, as she was trailing behind her Mom.
“What’s wrong with Jared?” Maya asked, ignoring Allie, and setting the box down on the kitchen table.
“He’s in jail Ma,” Kate cried, and it went silent in the house. Kate sniffed, and held the phone closely to her chest.
Maya took the phone, and pressed it to her ear. “Jared?” She said, “Yes, alright. I’ll be there soon.” Then there was a pause. Then, “Honey, I don’t know how we’re going to afford it, but we’ll manage.” Another pause. This was followed by, “Alright, I love you too.”
Maya put the phone down, and reached for her keys- which were hanging on a hook near the phone. “What’re we going to do?” Kate whispered, wiping her tears away.
“We’ll manage,” Maya muttered, and then was out the door. Kate and Allie cried into each other’s arms, and Angie felt left out. She slowly walked up the stairs, hearing the cries of Kate and Allie.
When she was in her room, she pulled out her bag, and slowly started packing her things. Angie just couldn’t stay any longer. She just couldn’t do it. She wasn’t helping at all, and she was probably a bother.
So Angie pulled out a great big sum of money, and a note, and left it on the table. Kate and Allie had moved to their rooms. So no one was there when Angie had left, and this time she wasn’t coming back.
