Chapter Twenty Four

Jared pulled in front the store Ethan told Jared they should meet at. He parked his car, and jammed his hands into his pockets as he walked towards the store. There was a single light on, but Jared didn’t see Ethan’s car. Something was wrong here, but that didn’t stop Jared from entering the store. “Ethan?” Jared called.

          “Here dude,” Ethan replied.

Ethan stepped out into the light, and Jared saw the large bruise on his face. “Sorry about your face man,” Jared apologized, though he didn’t fully mean it.

“Why dude?” He asked, “Why’d you punch me?”

          “You were drunk,” Jared explained.

“So? Like that hasn’t happened before?” Ethan growled.

“You were grabbing at Angie,” He snapped, “That was not cool.”

“I’m guessing you’re, like, dating now?” Ethan asked.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Jared shrugged, “But you screwed your chance up by getting drunk.”

          Ethan rolled his eyes.

Then Lisa came out of the back room with something behind her back. “Lisa?” Jared muttered, “What’re you doing here?”

“Giving you a piece of my mind,” She snapped.

“I didn’t do anything to you,” Jared snapped.

“You broke my heart,” She cried.

“We were never going out,” He laughed.

“To me we were,” Lisa snapped, “I supplied the beer, and you drank it! Doesn’t that count?”

          “No,” He answered.

“Well it doesn’t matter, because we’re over,” Lisa growled.

Jared didn’t even bother answering that statement. “What’s behind your back?” Jared asked.

Lisa smiled evilly and pulled out a gun from behind her back. Jared quickly raised his hands in surrender with wide eyes. “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” He called out, “There’s no need for that! I didn’t hurt you guys that bad!”

“We’re not gona kill you man,” Ethan scoffed.

“Well then what’s the gun for?” Jared retorted.

“It’s to make sure you stay where you are,” Lisa answered, “We don’t want t0 be the ones the cops find. That, J, is going to be you.”

Jared’s eyes widened and he went to take a step back but Lisa quickly held the gun up higher so he stopped. “Careful Jared,” Lisa hissed, “You even try to move again and I’ll shoot you. Don’t test me, because this isn’t a joke. Just stay where you are.”

Ethan smiled and started to break open the few cash registers the store had. He pulled out the money and pocketed some while he placed some on the table. Jared’s eyes widened when he realized that this was their way of getting back at him. The two of them had joined forces and both benefited from it. “So you’re trying to get me in jail?” Jared asked. “How do you know I don’t care what happens to me? If I don’t care if you shoot me?”

“We’ve watched how you were with Angie,” Lisa answered, “You have a soft spot. You won’t want to do that.”

Jared winced, and looked at the gun Lisa held high in her hands. “Well you can’t stay there with the gun. The police will find you too,” Jared snapped.

The two of them laughed. “That would be hard to explain once they find where you broke into,” Ethan laughed.

“What do you mean…?” Jared started, and then trailed off once he realized where he was. This wasn’t just any ordinary store, it was a bank.

“That’s right Jared,” Lisa smiled, “So in other words, you’re toast.”

“You don’t understand,” He said, “My family will hate me. Angie will hate me. I can’t do this right now. Please, Ethan, Lisa. Someone!”

Lisa rolled her eyes. “Stop being a baby,” She snapped.

“What happened to the tough J man I knew?” Ethan asked.

“He’s still here,” Jared murmured, shifting his weight.

“No, he’s not,” Ethan growled, “And don’t you dare pretend you’re him! Because you’re not.”

“Okay, so maybe I’m a little different than before,” He started.

“No, you’re way different than before,” Lisa told him.

“We can straighten this out,” He pleaded.

“Is that paint on your face?” Ethan laughed, “Dude, what were you doing?”

“Don’t change the subject,” Jared snapped, “Now please let’s just talk about this?”

          “No, we’re leaving,” Ethan answered.

“One more thing,” Lisa smiled, and then walked over to Jared. Jared thought she was going to help him. He knew that Lisa used to love him, but he never loved her. He didn’t know why, but she just didn’t send off any spark for him. Not like the way Angie did at least. How could he tell her that?

Instead of talking to him though, Lisa slapped him across the face. It hurt too. His cheek stung. His head slowly turned around, and faced Lisa. “What was that for?” He snapped.

“I’ve wanted to do that for awhile,” She hissed.

“Come on Lisa,” Jared whispered, “This is childish. This was a stupid prank, I mean, who would think of something like this? Let’s just settle this now.”

Lisa looked at Jared and sighed, “Alright.” But she didn’t help Jared out. Instead, she threw a rock through the window, and the alarm went off. Jared flinched as he immediately heard the police sirens.

The two of them stood there, Lisa still pointing the gun until police lights were visible.

Lisa walked back over to Ethan. Ethan smiled, and put his arm around Lisa. “Have fun in jail,” He mocked, and then together they walked out the back door.

Once they were gone Jared quickly burst through the front door. He wasn’t sure where to go because it looked like police cars were coming from both ends. Hopefully if the police listened to him he would be able to get out of this one.

          They didn’t though.

The cars pulled up, and officers came rushing with loaded guns. Officer Ridly came striding over. He tsked, and narrowed his eyes at Jared. “You promised Jared,” Ridly muttered, “You promised.”

“I swear this wasn’t me,” Jared cried, “It wasn’t me! Please, Officer, it wasn’t me!”

          “Nice try Shay,” Ridly sighed.

“I’m being serious,” Jared yelled, “This wasn’t me! I was totally set up!”

“Hand over the money,” Another officer growled.

“It wasn’t me!” Jared yelled, “I swear it wasn’t me.”

“Thought this through, didn’t you?” Ridly asked, and then grabbed Jared’s arm. He dragged Jared to the police cars and hissed, “I gave you a chance, Shay, way to screw it up!”

“I swear it wasn’t me,” Jared pleaded, “I’m telling the truth.”

Ridly gave a humorless chuckle, and then slammed Jared against the car. Jared’s face slammed against it hard and he could just taste the blood in his mouth. “Officer,” He begged, but they were done listening to him.

“You have the right to remain silent,” The officer recited. Jared had heard it all before, but he knew that this time there was no point in arguing. He didn’t want anything used against him.

They shoved down hard on Jared’s head, and pushed him into the car. Jared’s hands were cuffed again behind his back. Ridly got into the car, and seemed more disappointed than ever. “I thought the pretty lady would turn you around,” He confessed.

“She did,” Jared snapped, “I’m telling you, I didn’t do it.”

“That’s what they all say,” Ridly growled. He wouldn’t listen to anything more that Jared had to say. Jared was toast.
