Everyone had gotten into a regular routine for the days. It was all thrown off for Hannah's spring break. She had been working really hard and, frankly, Lex was overjoyed. Hannah and Ethan both deserved the break and it gave Bailey time to spend with the two of them. Lex was taking half days so she could spend time with Ethan and Hannah. While most of it was spent budgeting, it was still nice time.
"We have one hundred dollars until Bailey can actually be ours," Lex said. She looked at the numbers on her spreadsheet. "We can speed it up if we don't order weekly pizza for two weeks."
"I think we can do that," Hannah said, affectionately petting Bailey.
"I agree with Banana," Ethan said. Lex nodded.
"Alright. Let's do this!" Lex exclaimed. She pet Bailey. "You're soon going to be living with us."
Bailey enthusiastically wagged her tail, her tongue hanging out of her mouth. Hannah giggled. "I love you," Hannah said, kissing Bailey on the top of her head.
"So, tomorrow I'm still working until noon. Do you guys want to spend that time with Bailey, or do you want me to take her with me to work?" Lex asked.
"I want to spend it with her," Hannah said determinedly. Lex nodded.
"Cool. And I don't know how I forgot, but payday's tomorrow. We just have to be wise, so no pizza for two weeks, like I said," Lex smiled, "I can do the final adoption tomorrow."
"I'm so excited! I know Emma will be, too. We haven't told Becky and Tom yet, but I'm sure they'll also be excited," Ethan said.
"Well, I should take her tomorrow then, so I don't have to come at five again," Lex said. Hannah nodded.
"I'll sacrifice the morning," Hannah promised.
The next day, Lex arrived at work with Bailey. Heading to the back, Lex heard Lydia before seeing her. "Is today the day?" Lydia asked Lex. She nodded.
"It's seemed like forever," Lex said.
"Okay, so I'll get the paperwork ready for when you sign out at noon. I'll do my best so you can be in and out ASAP," Lydia said. Lex nodded and signed in, curious about where she would be working today. It would be two dog training classes, one and a half hour each. The first class was graduating and the second one was starting. Lex went to the class area to set up, with Bailey's help.
"Hey, Bailey, go lay down please," Lex said. Bailey obeyed and lay down on the small dog bed. As Bailey slept, Lex made sure the treats were stocked, the list of skills was posted, there was the proper amount of chairs, and the area was clean. Just as she put away the broom, the doors to the store opened. "Bailey, come here."
Bailey woke up and walked over the Lex, who clipped on the leash. They stood by the doorway while the class filtered in. Lex didn't normally teach, but she knew how to. "Hi, everyone, how are you doing?" Lex asked when everyone was there. It was met with a positive mumble. "Great! So today, we are initiating what are essentially the 'final exams' of puppy school. It's to check the basic skills and etiquette they have hopefully learned. Let's get started. First up, is sit. You can use a hand motion and/or a verbal command."
The class flew by and all the dogs graduated. After photos were taken and certificates given out, all the dogs were let off of their leash to play with each other. The tails didn't stop wagging until it was time to go and Lex had to prepare the space once more for her next class. She gave cordial greetings to everyone in the class who was coming in with all types of dogs, old and young, big and small. When all the participants were seated, Lex went to the front of the class with Bailey.
"Hi everyone! My name's Lex and I will be teaching the lesson today. Over the course of these classes, we'll be teaching your dogs basic skills like sit, stay, and lay down in addition to proper etiquette and some fun bonus skills, like how to retrieve a toy with only a verbal command. For today, it's just going to be the basics. Don't worry. Bailey is going to demonstrate the tricks. Let's move the chairs to the sides and stand in a circle," Lex said as the sound of chairs scraping the ground ensued in the room. With a quick 'sit and stay,' Lex had Bailey sit. Lex collected her small treat packets and gave one to each owner. "We're going to learn sit now. It's very basic, and I've found that lots of dogs find it easier to learn with both a verbal cue and a hand motion. From there, most of them find what they prefer. So, Bailey knows the verbal one. Sit. Good girl."
The class was really fun to Lex. She felt like a proud parent knowing that Bailey was being super obedient. When Lex's shift ended, she signed out and went back to Lydia. "Sign here, and here and confirm all the details for the billing address," Lydia said. Lex smiled and did what she was told. "Congratulations, you have adopted a dog. Take this coupon and you get the first bag of dog food for free."
"Thank you. I'll see you tomorrow," Lex said. She shook hands with Lydia before heading home with a large bag of dog food.
"Did you do it?" Hannah asked, attacking Lex the moment she got home.
"Woah, Banana. And I did, don't you worry. She's now ours. I got her a collar and a new tag," Lex said, showing off Bailey's new collar tag in the shape of a heart.
"I heard it from the kitchen!" Ethan exclaimed. Upon Lex taking off Bailey's leash, Ethan picked up Lex and spun her in a circle.
"We're new dog owners," Lex sang, giving Bailey a kiss on the head. "Okay so I know we just figured out a budget, but do you want to have everyone over? I have a reasonable amount of food."
"Sounds great. I'll text the chat. 7:00 okay?" Ethan asked as Lex headed to the kitchen with Hannah and Bailey. Lex nodded to Ethan before looking at the contents of the kitchen, wondering what she could make. There were about six hours before people would come. After a few Google and Pintrest searches, Lex figured out what she could make, which was a tomato cream soup with grilled cheese. It wasn't major, but it was enough to be a decent dinner. At 6:30, Lex looked at Bailey. "Hannah!"
"Yeah?" Hannah asked, entering the room.
"Have you fed Bailey? Or Ethan? And if not, could you please feed her?" Lex asked Hannah.
"No need to worry. I fed her and she's gone to the bathroom," Hannah said, proud of her responsibility.
"Good job, Banana," Lex smiled, affectionately patting Hannah's head.
Everyone came over for a casual dinner to celebrate Bailey's official adoption. Emma was delighted by Bailey's training and interaction with Diane. "How did you train her?" Emma asked as Bailey lay down with only a verbal command.
"T-R-E-A-T-S and taking her to work. It let her be more social," Lex explained, motioning for Bailey to stand. Bailey obediently sat next to Lex as Emma smiled.
"Congratulations on becoming a dog mom. I can tell she's going to be a very good girl," Emma said. Diane looked up at Emma. "Yes, you're also a good girl, Buba."
"I can tell they're going to be very good friends," Becky said, patting Bailey on the head and scooping up Diane.
"Oh! That reminds me that I'm going to try and get Bailey certified as a therapy dog. I want her to help others," Lex exclaimed.
"That's going to be awesome!" Emma said.
"I'm just excited for this new chapter in my life," Lex smiled.
