Lex stumbled awake on April first. She had the day off of work, but she had plans to start training Bailey. Quietly, as to not wake anyone, Lex snuck downstairs and into Hannah's room to let Bailey out. Once that was completed, Lex disabled the alarm and walked outside with Bailey. The weather was nice, so Lex left the door leading outside open as she poured herself a cup of coffee. When she returned outside, Bailey was curled up.
"Do you want to go back inside?" Lex asked Bailey, who stood up and quickly walked inside and lay down next to her food and water bowls. "I know, I'll feed you."
Lex filled Bailey's food bowl with the proper amount of food and sat down to watch. "Lex?" Lex looked towards the direction of the voice. It was Ethan at the foot of the stairs, looking at her bleary-eyed. It was clear that he had just woken up.
"Good morning," Lex replied.
"What time is it?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.
"It's about five minutes before I was going to wake you and Hannah," she said, pouring Ethan a cup of coffee.
"Well, I'm going to get ready. What's your game plan for having today off?" He asked, stirring sugar into the mug of coffee.
"I got an online course to teach Bailey how to be a therapy dog. Once I complete all of the classes, she has to do a small test in order to get certified for therapy," Lex said, "I'm going to start on that. And I can get you guys on time from school, just call me if anything changes."
"Will do," Ethan said, starting to drink his coffee. He and Lex sat in silence until Bailey jumped onto Lex as a plea to go outside. Lex smiled and let Bailey out before waking up Hannah.
Everyone was tired on the way to school. Lex drove to the front and dropped Ethan and Hannah off. "Have a nice day, let me know if you need me to come earlier," Lex said. Ethan quickly kissed Lex and closed the door. Hannah stayed in the back, petting Bailey. "What's up, Banana?"
"I don't want to go today. Teachers always do April Fools things like give us a really hard timed test or tell us that we have a big assignment due and I don't like that stress. It makes my anxiety a lot worse," Hannah said. Lex turned around.
"Tell you what, I'll go with you and talk to your teacher," Lex said.
"What about Bailey?" Hannah asked as Lex searched for a parking spot.
"She's trained well enough to be allowed in public places," Lex said, parking the car. "Are you ready?"
Hannah nodded as she took Lex's hand to walk into the classroom. The girls made it to the classroom and Lex entered first, letting Hannah stay outside with Bailey. "Hi," Lex said timidly finding the teacher.
"Can I help you?" She asked, looking up from the pile of papers she was grading.
"Hi, so I wanted to discuss something about Hannah before she comes in. Are you going to do one of those stress-inducing April Fool's things?" Lex asked.
"I was going to do one and give them all a timed middle school math test. After two minutes, I'd take it. Is there a problem?"
"Yes. Hannah has anxiety and when she hears those things, despite knowing it's a joke, her anxiety triggered because there's never been a mention of a pop quiz or a test and she didn't study. I love her more than life itself, so I was wondering if you could cancel it," Lex said. The teacher shook her head.
"I can't. Hannah seems to only have stress, which isn't different than any other kids."
"Well, in that case, Hannah will be unable to attend class today. She'll be back tomorrow. I'll be here at 3:30 to pick up make-up work," Lex said, turning on her heel and leaving the room.
"What happened, Lexi?" Hannah asked Lex.
"Your teacher was going to do a middle school math test timed for two minutes. I explained your situation and your teacher didn't sympathize. Come on, let's go home," Lex said, taking Bailey's leash in her hand.
"Thank you," Hannah said. She and Lex headed home in silence.
"So today I was going to do an hour of therapy training with Bailey. Do you want to help?" Lex asked. Hannah nodded. "Okay, we'll do it in ten minutes."
The day passed by in a cheerful manner. Bailey loved getting pet by Hannah and receiving rewards for a skill well-performed. "Well, Banana, we have to get going. We have to get your make-up work and Ethan," Lex said, checking the time. Hannah wrangled Bailey into her vest and attached the seatbelt.
The girls made it to school just in time to find Ethan leaving. Lex stopped him when they crossed paths. "Hey, Hannah didn't go today, because of those anxiety-inducing things teachers do as pranks. I'm just getting her make-up work and we'll head straight home," Lex said. She tossed him the keys. "Just so you can enter."
"Thanks, Lex!" Ethan exclaimed as they parted ways. Lex went to the front desk.
"Hi, I'm here to get Hannah Foster's make-up work," Lex said.
"You're here at a great time. It was just given to me," the assistant said, handing Lex a folder.
"Thank you. Have a nice day," Lex said, heading back outside. She got into the passenger seat (Ethan wanted to drive) and handed Hannah the folder.
"Man, I hope the test she was going to give isn't in here," Hannah said, quickly flipping through the papers.
They got home and all got to work. Lex was budgeting, Ethan was lesson planning, and Hannah got started on the make-up work. "Guys, I don't know how to do this," Hannah said at long last. Lex glanced over.
"She put in that fucking test! Okay, Hannah if you can wait a while, I can help you," Lex said.
"Don't worry, I have this," Ethan said, moving his seat closer to Hannah's. "Look, so these are fraction operations with variables and it says to solve. Okay, so it's just algebra."
Lex started on dinner as Hannah and Ethan wrapped up the test. "Thanks for helping," Hannah said, checking her last answer like Ethan had taught her a few minutes earlier.
"No problem," Ethan smiled.
The next day, Hannah returned to school. "Hannah, it was unfortunate to learn that you wouldn't attend yesterday. I hope the test I gave you took well. I don't generally do take-home tests, but I didn't want you to sacrifice recess or time after school to take it. How did you find it?" Hannah's teacher asked. Hannah dug through her folder to find the test.
"Once my sister's boyfriend taught me basic algebra, it was pretty easy," Hannah said, handing over the test. Her teacher looked at the paper, her mouth agape.
"Well, it's good to know that you did it. What did you do when you weren't at school?"
"Well, Ms. Winters, I helped my sister start to train our dog to be a therapy dog," Hannah said. Ms. Winters was too surprised by Hannah to form a coherent response.
Meanwhile, Ethan was overseeing the class take the test. He was TA-ing a fifth grade class with a woman named Avery. It was her first year teaching. "So can you do the basic algebra lesson after lunch?" Avery asked. Ethan nodded.
"Sure thing," Ethan said, opening his notebook where the lesson plan was scrawled down.
At the pet store, Lex was teaching back-to-back classes until lunch. After lunch, she was going to work by the fish. "So, today we're learning gentle. This command will help the dogs not bite you when taking a treat. Bailey will not demonstrate. Bailey, be gentle when you take this," Lex said, offering Bailey a small treat. Bailey barely touched Lex while taking the treat. "Good girl. So the way I teach this is essentially repetitive learning where I give her something small and say gentle. If she bites me or isn't gentle, I recoil before waiting and trying again. She learned that I didn't like being bit. Another way I've taught this is petting them gently and saying gentle so they understand what it is before moving to the other strategy."
Later that day, Hannah's teacher was passing back work. Hannah received the test she had taken the night before. It only had a note scrawled on the front in bright red. Come see me! Hannah put away the test, along with all her other work in her folder. There were five minutes until school that didn't have any purpose, so Hannah brought out her book and started to read. Before she knew it, all the students had left, so she reluctantly went to her teacher.
"What did you want to know about my test?" Hannah asked, bringing it back out.
"Well, for starters, it's a test. No help is allowed," Ms. Winters said.
"It was never explicitly stated anywhere on the test," Hannah retorted, "And we've never learned any of this. I'm sorry that I wanted to get a good grade. My sister works so hard in order to make sure I can come here and eat and keep a home."
"Well, I'm writing you up. Drop it off on your way out today and figure out what you have to do. See you tomorrow, Hannah," Ms. Winters said, handing Hannah a yellow slip of paper before putting on sunglasses and turning off the lights. A spilt second before she could lock the door, Hannah raced out with her things and didn't stop running until she found Ethan's classroom. It was empty, with only Ethan. She sighed in relief as she opened the door and raced into his arms.
"What's shaking, Banana?" Ethan asked, putting down a stack of papers on the nearest desk to hug her in return. Hannah pulled away and revealed the yellow slip of paper. His mouth opened as he took the slip from Hannah's hand. "This is stupid, so let's go to the office. I'll figure out who can pick us up."
Ethan gathered his things in a backpack and walked Hannah to the front office. "Hi, I'm here to submit this," Hannah said, nervously handing over the note to the front desk secretary.
"Can you tell me what happened?" The secretary asked.
"Yesterday I was gone and in my makeup work was a test. It was a middle school test and I didn't know how to do any of it, so I asked Ethan for help. He taught me how to do it and I told my teacher that's how I did it and I did it because I wanted a good grade," Hannah said. Tears ran down her face.
"Okay. So, I'm going to excuse this because she obviously didn't factor the test into the final grade. I'm going to tell her that I had you stay here for half an hour. You did nothing and just stayed here," the secretary said, smiling to Hannah and Ethan. Hannah offered a smile.
"Hey, Emma's taking us home. And she has Diane," Ethan said, leading Hannah outside. Emma was waiting for both of them in a car.
"Thanks, Emma," Hannah said, sliding into the back.
"Don't worry about it. Do you want to hold Diane?" Emma asked. Hannah nodded as Emma passed Diane to the backseat.
When they got home, Hannah finished her work quickly and continued reading her book. When Lex came home, she found Hannah and Ethan around the kitchen table, totally focused on what they were doing. "How was school today?" Lex asked as Bailey ran over to Hannah.
"My teacher wrote me up—" Hannah started, petting Bailey's head.
"—For a dumb fucking reason," Ethan continued. Hannah gave him a look.
"So I turned it in but the lady at the desk told me it was dumb so I was let go," Hannah concluded. Lex looked at them both, wide-eyed.
"Wow, I hate your teacher," Lex said to Hannah.
"Tell me about it. I can't wait until we're done with school," Hannah said, petting Bailey.

Hi, everyone! I'm so sorry this is a day late, I was really busy yesterday, but I hope this isn't much later. Sorry. :(
Happy Pride! In other news, I've been listening to Falsettos nonstop and I cry earlier each time. It's kinda like Twisted, in the way that I know the ending but I still cry. Also, who's excited for the #Hamilfilm? I'm super excited, even though I don't have Disney+. In all honestly, I just want "Satisfied," "Wait For It," "Guns and Ships," and "Burn" I think. We'll see! I hope y'all have an amazing week!
