"What can't you believe?" asks the raspy voice of my newly awoken and thankfully oblivious little sister as she moves into the kitchen and to the pantry where she begins to prepare some cereal.
As Lexi asks this I quickly move my head to look at Jess and give her a look, hopefully discretely, to tell her not to utter a word regarding what I had just told her to Lexi. She gives me a slight nod as if to say that she understands and then goes on to spurt some lies.
"Oh, I was just saying I can't believe you managed to keep your sister awake after ten. That's usually the latest she can possibly make it to if we try to watch a movie together on a Friday night," she lies, thankfully making up something that was a lot more believable than anything I could have fabricated.
"Well, I was hoping I could make that happen for at least one more night," Lexi replies, making both our eyes flash to hers to see what she was talking about. Surely she wouldn't take advantage of my sisterly love so greedily by asking me to be her ride yet again. I had some much needed relaxing and sleep booked in for tonight which I really did not want to sacrifice again as much as I did love my sister. This was the downside of having my sister come in to the city on a weekend to visit.
"Lexi, please tell me I don't have to be your ride again," I groan, not willing and incapable of hiding my annoyance at what she was suggesting.
"No, you don't have to worry about being my ride again. At least not just yet," she answers, with me sighing in relief in response but still anxious to hear what she intended with me, "I wanted to see if you were still willing to go out with Theodore, Damon and myself like I suggested last night," she reveals.
I begin to groan once again in response to her suggestion. "Oh Lexi, please don't make me spend my Saturday night like that" or any night I wanted to add.
"Come on, please, Elle Belle," she begs, putting on a baby voice and using her childhood nickname for me to try and convince me. "Damon really wanted to see you again and you're single and should be ready to mingle," she adds. "Plus, I'd really love a chance to not only be able to spend more time with you but also get to know Theodore and his friends more."
"Lexi, I really don't feel like it," I tell her, neglecting to mentioning that hours ago I was hoping that maybe I'd see her date again as my date instead.
"Oh please, Elle Belle! Just this one time," she goes on, now employing puppy dog eyes in her mission to convince me that rivalled Charlie's. I can see Jess rolling her eyes from behind her.
And maybe it was the guilt of knowing that I had so many thoughts about the guy she was seeing which I really shouldn't have or maybe it was the fatigue getting to my head but for some reason, some really stupid reason, I decided I would agree to this one plea of hers.
"Fine," I tell her. "I'll go just this once."
Out of nowhere, Lexi starts jumping around, expressing way too much excitement and energy for my liking this early in the day. She pulls me in to a tight hug, swaying me from side to side in her joy. As she does so, I look over her shoulder to where Jess sits shaking her head from side to side with her eyes wide open in dismay as if to ask me 'what have you gotten yourself into?'. I was just asking myself that same question. I couldn't tell what had come over me to sacrifice myself to the further discomfort and torture of being with both Theodore and Lexi once again.
"Oh my god, thank you Elle Belle. You're the best. You won't regret this," Lexi proclaims, loosening her grip on me just enough to move slightly backwards and look at me as she tells me this, "Maybe you'll even have some romantic connections tonight."
Jess instantly starts coughing on the coffee she had just poured for herself, clearly humoured by the irony, causing Lexi to eye her off.
Lord help me, what have I just signed up to?
